Pursuant to Halifax Regional School Board Policy and Procedures “A.001 Naming School Facilities”, I would like to report the process and recommendations for a name for the new peninsular high school.

Please find attached for your reference:

• Appendix A – Detailed Process and Timeline • Appendix B - Press Release • Appendix C - Committee Members • Appendix D - Suggested Names • Appendix E - Acknowledgement

The process was initiated on December 9, 2004 as outlined.

Twenty-five distinct names were submitted for consideration. These were received by e-mail, fax and in person. On Tuesday, February 8, the committee met to review these suggestions. Copies of all correspondence were distributed to committee members.

The committee began by reviewing HRSB policy and procedures. We reviewed the list of suggestions and then we took time for each member to review their copy of the rationale submitted with each suggestion. We prioritized our individual preferences and with a 3-2-1 rating scale we filtered the list of 25 suggestions to 6. It was overwhelmingly clear at this point that there was but one choice. We discussed other suggestions, confirming our decision. The committee felt so strongly that “Citadel” was the name for the school that the only satisfactory alternative also included “Citadel” in the title.

Recommendations:

The prioritized recommendations from the Committee to Name the New Peninsular High School are:

1. Citadel High School 2. Halifax Citadel High School

It must also be noted that the committee would like to see an accurate French translation of the title as a second name to be placed on the school.

Sincerely,

Elwin LeRoux

Good morning,

Thank you for responding to the call for name suggestions for the new high school on the Halifax peninsula.

We have received many suggestions and comments. These will all go forward to a committee of students, School Advisory Council chairs, parents, Halifax Regional School Board members, teachers and principals. This committee will receive copies of all the information, e-mails and faxes that I have received.

The committee’s responsibility will be to review all suggestions and to forward a prioritized list to the Halifax Regional School Board. By policy, it is the board’s responsibility to name schools.

On behalf of the committee please allow me to extend our appreciation for your interest and input. Please continue to follow the progress of the design and construction of the new high school. Your continued ideas and suggestions can be forwarded to me at any time by replying to this e- mail.

Best regards,

Elwin LeRoux Principal
