Mr. Justin Roberts, my friend, for his English writing advice. ii ABSTRACT The internal combustion engine, performing mechanical work by harnessing combustion, has proved to be a convenient, efficient and reliable path in the last decades. However, the complexity of the inner structures and mechanisms act as the essential barrier which limits the further improvement of the internal combustion engine. The valve train, the structure that operates the combination gas exchange, contributes its friction to the internal mechanism loss which consumes power and confines the thermal efficiency. Based on the shape and operation of conventional poppet valves, a manufacturer has to sacrifice the piston top design and compression ratio to prevent valve-piston interference. This innovational research focuses on not only the valve train structure and driving method but also the shape and operating condition of the valve itself. As a new valve design, a unique Erect Located Cone Rotary Valve will be spinning inside of the combustion chamber to operate combination gas exchange. The thesis introduces the history of the internal combustion engine and the classification of the valve configuration. The research exposes the problems of the conventional poppet valve and discusses the advantages and limitations of previous rotary valve designs. The thesis presents detailed analysis, calculation and parameters of the erect rotary valve and also describes the limitation and the compromise of the current erect rotary valve design. Although some manufacturers do not recommend replacement at a specified mileage, others require it at 60,000-100,000 miles. A camshaft drive belt failure may cause extensive damage to internal engine components on most engines, although some designs do not allow piston-to-valve contact.     Bentley Mulsanne Turbo and Turbo R Turbocharging System Extracts from Workshop Manuals TSD4400, TSD 4700, TSD4737 Basic Principles of Operation – Systems with Solex 4A-1 Carburettor The turbocharger is fitted to increase the power, and especially the low engine speed torque, of the engine. This it achieved by utilising the exhaust gas flow to pump pressurised air into the engine at wide throttle openings. Whenever this occurs, the turbocharger applies boost to the induction system. Under most conditions, the motor runs under naturally-aspirated principles. The inlet manifold may be under partial vacuum but the pressure chest partially pressurised under conditions of moderate power demand. The size of the turbocharger has been carefully chosen to give a substantial increase in torque at low engine speeds. The turbocharger is especially effective from 800rpm, with the engine achieving full torque at less than 1800RPM. Thus, maximum engine torque is available constantly between 1800RPM and 3800 RPM. By comparison to most turbocharging systems, the turbocharger capacity may appear decidedly oversized. This selection is intentional, and is fundamental to the achievement of full engine torque at low engine speeds and the absence of any noticeable delay when boost is demanded. It also minimises heating of exhaust gases by ensuring minimal resistance to gas flow under boost conditions. Furthermore, the design has been carefully chosen to avoid the need for the turbocharger to accelerate on demand, a feature commonly referred to as spool-up. By using a large turbocharger running but unloaded when not under demand, spool-up is not a phenomenon in the system.

    POPPET VALVE A poppet valve is a valve consisting of a hole, usually round or oval, and a tapered plug, usually a disk shape on the end of a shaft also called a valve stem. The shaft guides the plug portion by sliding through a valve guide. In most applications a pressure differential helps to seal the valve and in some applications also open it. Other types Presta and Schrader valves used on tires are examples of poppet valves. The Presta valve has no spring and relies on a pressure differential for opening and closing while being inflated. Uses Poppet valves are used in most piston engines to open and close the intake and exhaust ports. Poppet valves are also used in many industrial process from controlling the flow of rocket fuel to controlling the flow of milk[[1]]. The poppet valve was also used in a limited fashion in steam engines, particularly steam locomotives. Most steam locomotives used slide valves or piston valves, but these designs, although mechanically simpler and very rugged, were significantly less efficient than the poppet valve. A number of designs of locomotive poppet valve system were tried, the most popular being the Italian Caprotti valve gear[[2]], the British Caprotti valve gear[[3]] (an improvement of the Italian one), the German Lentz rotary-cam valve gear, and two American versions by Franklin, their oscillating-cam valve gear and rotary-cam valve gear. They were used with some success, but they were less ruggedly reliable than traditional valve gear and did not see widespread adoption. Background If you are only interested in the solution, not the background and explanation, please jump to the last section of this posting. While aftermarket electronic ignition systems and upgraded ignition coils are commonly used on the ZX750E, I could not find any case in which a Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) system was used while retaining the stock ECU (Electronic Control Unit). With apologies to the experts on this forum that probably know everything I discuss below, this is for the benefit of those that, like myself, that had to figure it all out experimentally and come up with a solution. My personal motivation to use an ultimate ignition system was my conversion to methanol, which misfires and runs rough until fully warmed up. The higher energy output and multi-fire features of a CD system could possibly improve this. A typical inductive ignition system delivers about 100 mJ per spark, and electronic “points” and improved coils alone can only marginally improve upon this. A CD system can deliver theoretically much greater ignition energy, limited only by the size of the discharge capacitor, the charging voltage, and ultimately the internal breakdown voltage of the ignition coil. The output of the ARC-II is specified as 189mJ using a 500V charge voltage. My experience is based upon using the Dynatek Arc-II CD ignition system on my 1984 ZX-750E1. This CDI is advertised as having “the highest spark energy of any CDI on the market”.

    ENGINE BLOCK MATERIALS AND ITS PRODUCTION PROCESSES 2.2 THE CAST IRON MONOLITHIC BLOCK The widespread use of cast iron monolithic block is as a result of its low cost and its formidability. This type of block normally comes as the integral type where the engine cylinder and the upper crankcase are joined together as one. The iron used for this block is the gray cast iron having a pearlite-microstructure. The iron is called gray cast iron because its fracture has a gray appearance. Ferrite in the microstructure of the bore wall should be avoided because too much soft ferrite tends to cause scratching, thus increasing blow-by. The production of cast iron blocks using a steel die is rear because its lifecycle is shortened as a result of the repeated heat cycles caused by the molten iron. Sand casting is the method widely used in the production of cast iron blocks. This involves making the mould for the cast iron block with sand. The preparation of sand and the bonding are a critical and very often rate-controlling step. Permanent patterns are used to make sand molds. Usually, an automated molding machine installs the patterns and prepares many molds in the same shape. Molten metal is poured immediately into the mold, giving this process very high productivity. After solidification, the mold is destroyed and the inner sand is shaken out of the block. The sand is then reusable. The bonding of sand is done using two main methods: (i) the green sand mold and (ii) the dry sand mold.
