Vignettes. the Legacy of Jewish Laupheim
Kilian von Steiner (1833–1903) Kilian of Steiner, the first of the six personalities intro- duced in this book, was born in 1833 and ennobled in 1895. He worked his entire life dedicated to the advance- ment of his native region of Württemberg in southern Germany and had a profound influence on the develop- ment of its finance sector. His family is the most impres- sive example of intergenerational social advancement within the Jewish community of Laupheim. Their willing- ness to assimilate into the cultural, religious and social surroundings played a significant role in their ascension. It is as well interesting to compare Steiner with Carl Laemmle, who was born a generation after him and in different social and economic conditions, yet also experi- enced great commercial success. Kilian of Steiner’s grandfather and his father both worked as peddlers. In 1836, Viktor Steiner, Kilian’s fa- ther, and his brother Heinrich, opened a corner store sell- ing leather goods. With their new business, they were able to rise above the class of Jewish small merchants to which they had belonged and to build a house and work beyond the confines of Judenberg, a Jewish district in Laupheim. The next step in their social advancement was to acquire the Grosslaupheim Castle from the state in 1843. Though the Jewish Emancipation Act of 1828 had conceded Jew- ish people more rights, the Steiner family nonetheless needed non-Jewish business partners in order to complete the purchase. Jewish people at that time were still not 11 allowed exclusive property rights to such estates. -

Alexander Von Pflaum
Rescue by Jews During the Holocaust Solidarity in a Disintegrating World
Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day 2020 Rescue by Jews during the Holocaust Solidarity in a Disintegrating World “UNTO EVERY PERSON THERE IS A NAME” Aron Menczer (center) on deck with a group of Jewish youth from Vienna, whom he rescued and brought to Eretz Israel, February 1939 Ghetto Fighters’ House Photo Archive Jerusalem, Nissan 5780 April 2020 “Unto Every Person There Is A Name” Public Recitation of Names of Holocaust Victims in Israel and Abroad on Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day “Unto every person there is a name, given to him by God and by his parents”, wrote the Israeli poetess Zelda. Every single victim of the Holocaust had a name. The vast number of Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust – some six million men, women and children - is beyond human comprehension. We are therefore liable to lose sight of the fact that each life that was brutally ended belonged to an individual, a human being endowed with feelings, thoughts, ideas and dreams whose entire world was destroyed, and whose future was erased. The annual recitation of names of victims on Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day is one way of posthumously restoring the victims’ names, of commemorating them as individuals. We seek in this manner to honor the memory of the victims, to grapple with the enormity of the murder, and to combat Holocaust denial and distortion. This year marks the 31st anniversary of the global Shoah memorial initiative “Unto Every Person There Is A Name”, held annually under the auspices of the President of the State of Israel. -
Defiance in Face of Despair
Defiance in Face of Despair DEFIANCE IN FACE OF DESPAIR Holocaust Memory Reflection Program Written and Compiled by Dr. Elana Heideman INTRODUCTION: For years it was said that the “Jews walked to their death like sheep to slaughter,” but the diaries and memoirs of the victims and survivors prove that every day, they resisted the tyranny, fought for life, and struggled to keep their humanity, their dignity, and their hope alive under the most severe conditions. Jewish resistance in the ghettos, camps and throughout the Holocaust is an integral part of the memory we inherit and must pass onward to the future. This reflection program explores the myriad of ways that Jews responded to the extreme circumstances they faced during the Holocaust. Written and compiled by Holocaust scholar Dr. Elana Heideman, student and protege of Professor Elie Wiesel, the content is laid out as a ceremony, for those interested in running it with their school or community. It is also a wonderful resource for reading privately or with a small group. OPENING POEM - 4 READERS Standing together at the front, reciting in turn. 1 The homelessness, the helplessness - of the individual, the family, the community, the entire people It gave new meaning to the history of Jewish suffering. Reality dictated a world turned inside out, where faith and hope were outlawed and pain was ever-present. Hatred, despair, death wafted through the streets around them, it encompassed every crevice. How does one maintain faith under such circumstances? To stand up to the bullies and the brutes? How to remain sane… 1 © Dr. -
