Every single victim of the Holocaust had a name. The vast number of Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust – some six million men, women and children - is beyond human comprehension. We are therefore liable to lose sight of the fact that each life that was brutally ended belonged to an individual, a human being endowed with feelings, thoughts, ideas and dreams whose entire world was destroyed, and whose future was erased. The annual recitation of names of victims on Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day is one way of posthumously restoring the victims’ names, of commemorating them as individuals. We seek in this manner to honor the memory of the victims, to grapple with the enormity of the murder, and to combat Holocaust denial and distortion. This year marks the 31st anniversary of the global Shoah memorial initiative “Unto Every Person There Is A Name”, held annually under the auspices of the President of the State of Israel.

Father worked in all kinds of jobs. Mother was a seamstress. All the children went to Yiddish school. 1:01:44 Moshe began working with his father at age 9. 1:02:04 Prelude to WWII, when war broke out between Russia and Germany in 1941. 1:03:26 22 June, 1941, when war broke out. The children were on school holiday for the summer. Visit IWitness (iwitness.usc.edu) for testimonies, resources, and activities to learn more about life in the camps, Babi Yar, the Einsatzgruppen, and other topics associated with the “Final Solution.” In her testimony, Itka Zygmuntowicz recites the poem she wrote in Auschwitz—a poem about freedom. Many children (and adults) used art as a way to spiritually survive the experience of the ghettos, and in some instances, the extermination camps. Write about the importance of the arts in your life and how music, painting, writing poetry, or something similar has helped you during a particularly difficult time. Throughout this unit, you have considered an important question regarding the Holocaust: How was the Holocaust humanly possible? Respond to this question in light of the material you have studied. Review the Pyramid of Hate handout and consider whether “genocide” should be added to the top of the pyramid or if there are other changes to the graphic that are warranted based on your study of the “Final Solution.” Prepare a revised “pyramid of hate” or a completely different graphic representation that you feel more accurately depicts the escalation of hate. The revised graphic should be accompanied by a short explanatory text that explains the reasoning behind adding genocide to the top of the pyramid, changing the graphic entirely, or keeping it as is.

    ART IN THE HOLOCAUST COPY NOT DO Art in the Holocaust This exhibition aims to provide a glimpse into Holocaust art through a selection of artworks from the Yad Vashem Collection. The artworks were created by 20 artists during the period of the Holocaust (1939-1945), almost half of whom did not survive. The artworks reflects the tension between the inclination to document the terrible events endured and the desire to break free through art, transcending into the realms of beauty, imagination, and faith. While portraying their brethren, the Jewish artists tried to leave traces for future generations, thus fighting against the process of dehumanization and annihilation carried out by the German Nazis. Despite the appalling COPY living conditions and the daily struggle to survive, with their resourcefulness the artists overcame the scarcity of materials.
