Urban Sociology Is the Enduring View of Urban Space As a Proxy for Demographic, Structural, Economic Or Behavioral Variables in Social Research
UC Santa Barbara Spaces for Difference: An Interdisciplinary Journal Title Finding Space Beyond Variables: An Analytical Review of Urban Space and Social Inequalities Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/3tz160nq Journal Spaces for Difference: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1(2) Author Joseph, Lauren Publication Date 2008-12-01 Peer reviewed eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California Spaces for Difference: An Interdisciplinary Journal Volume 1, Number 2, pp. 29-50 Finding Space Beyond Variables: An Analytical Review of Urban Space and Social Inequalities LAUREN JOSEPH Stony Brook University ABSTRACT Attention to the element of space in the urban setting illuminates how social inequalities and social difference are reproduced and contested. In this review essay, I draw upon urban social research to demonstrate the relevance and utility of spatial analysis in the city, focusing on the dimensions of race, class, gender, and sexuality. I present a conceptual framework for analyzing the intersection of urban space, social inequality, and social difference: (a) urban space as inscribed by boundaries and reflective of patterns of social difference and inequality; (b) urban space as a site and object of struggle between social groups; and (c) urban space as a vehicle for social reproduction through the logic of its universe. Edward Soja points to the recent “spatial turn” of the late 1990s, in which he finds a “renewed awareness of the simultaneity and interwoven complexity of the social, historical, and spatial dimensions of our lives, their inseparability and often problematic interdependence” (2000:7). Drawing on Michel Foucault’s (1984) attention to the intersections of space, knowledge, and power and Henri Lefebvre’s (1991) conceptualization of the relations between spatiality, society and history, social researchers across disciplines have increasingly turned toward examining the social production of space, particularly urban space. -

Koel Chatterjee Phd Thesis
Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar. -

It is found that about 1200 Indian S&T journals are being covered by at least one of the international I&A services and over 300 S&T journals are openly accessible. However, coverage of Indian S&T journals by major citation databases, Web of Science (WoS) & Scopus is relatively poor. The newly launched Indian Citation Index (ICI) promises to cover more Indian journals. Keywords: Indian S&T journals, indexing & abstracting services, citation measure, impact factor Introduction Zoological Record, Excerpta Medica/Embase. India is the world's second fastest growing Medline, Index Copernicus, Mathematical Reviews, economy only next to China, with a large R & D Zentralblatt MATH, INIS, GeoBase along with two infrastructure. The Journal Coverage of Web of Science and Scopus: a Comparative Analysis Philippe Mongeon and Adèle Paul-Hus [email protected]; [email protected] Université de Montréal, École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l'information, C.P. 6128, Succ. Centre-Ville, H3C 3J7 Montréal, Qc, Canada Abstract Bibliometric methods are used in multiple fields for a variety of purposes, namely for research evaluation. Most bibliometric analyses have in common their data sources: Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science (WoS) and Elsevier’s Scopus. This research compares the journal coverage of both databases in terms of fields, countries and languages, using Ulrich’s extensive periodical directory as a base for comparison. Results indicate that the use of either WoS or Scopus for research evaluation may introduce biases that favor Natural Sciences and Engineering as well as Biomedical Research to the detriment of Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities. Similarly, English-language journals are overrepresented to the detriment of other languages. While both databases share these biases, their coverage differs substantially. As a consequence, the results of bibliometric analyses may vary depending on the database used. Keywords Bibliometrics, citations indexes, Scopus, Web of Science, research evaluation Introduction Bibliometric and scientometric methods have multiple and varied application realms, that goes from information science, sociology and history of science to research evaluation and scientific policy (Gingras, 2014). Large scale bibliometric research was made possible by the creation and development of the Science Citation Index (SCI) in 1963, which is now part of Web of Science (WoS) alongside two other indexes: the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) (Wouters, 2006). -
ON FRACTIONAL HELMHOLTZ EQUATIONS M. S. Samuel
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Bulgarian Digital Mathematics Library at IMI-BAS ON FRACTIONAL HELMHOLTZ EQUATIONS M. S. Samuel ¤ and Anitha Thomas ¤¤ Abstract In this paper we derive an analytic solution for the fractional Helmholtz equation in terms of the Mittag-Le²er function. The solutions to the frac- tional Poisson and the Laplace equations of the same kind are obtained, again represented by means of the Mittag-Le²er function. In all three cases the solutions are represented also in terms of Fox's H-function. MSC 2010: 26A33, 33E12, 33C60, 35R11 Key Words and Phrases: fractional Helmholtz equation, Caputo frac- tional derivative, Weyl fractional derivative, Mittag-Le²er function, Fox's H-function 1. Introduction The Helmholtz equation r2ª(x; y; z) + k2ª(x; y; z) = 0 is named after Hermann Von Helmholtz (1821-1894). It represents the time-independent form of the wave equation or di®usion equation obtained while applying the technique of separation of variables to reduce the complexities of the solu- tion procedure of the original equations. The two-dimensional Helmholtz equation appears in physical phenomena and engineering applications such as heat conduction, acoustic radiation, water wave propagation and even in biology. It plays essential role for estimating the geodesic sea floor proper- ties, the proper prediction of acoustic propagation in shallow water as well as at low frequencies, for solutions provided to such problems, we refer to °c 2010, FCAA { Diogenes Co.
