Η πανδημία της Ισπανικής γρίπης (1918-19) είχε θνητότητα 2.5% αλλά προκάλεσε τον θάνατο δεκάδων εκατομμυρίων ατόμων καθώς διαδόθηκε με απίστευτους ρυθμούς. Η γρίπη των πτηνών προκάλεσε 257 θανάτους σε σύνολο 421 προσβληθέντων (θνητότητα 61%) ενώ το Σύνδρομο Σοβαρής Αναπνευστικής Ανεπάρκειας (SARS) που ξεκίνησε το 2003 από το Χονγκ-Κονγκ ευθύνεται για τον θάνατο 299 ατόμων σε σύνολο 1.755 προσβληθέντων (θνητότητα 17%). Το ανησυχητικό στην παρούσα πανδημία είναι ότι προσβάλλει άτομα ηλικίας 25 έως 45 ετών (χωρίς να διαφεύγει κάποια άλλη ηλικιακή ομάδα) σε αντιδιαστολή με την εποχική γρίπη που στοχεύει κατά κύριο λόγο πολύ νεαρά άτομα και ηλικιωμένους. -

The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training Foreign Affairs Oral History Project RAZVIGOR BAZALA Interviewed by: Charles Stuart Kennedy Initial interview date: July 19, 2011 Copyright 2015 ADST INTRODUCTION The following narrative evolved from six two-hour interviews I had with Charles Stuart Kennedy of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training conducted in the fall of 2011 at its facility on the campus of the National Foreign Affairs Training Center in Arlington, Virginia. PERSONAL BACKGROUND My father Borislav Bazala was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1910, the son of a Croatian father and a Bulgarian mother. He passed away more than a century later in 2011. His father, Maximilian, was the youngest of six children in the somewhat rigidly structured home of my great grandfather who specified precisely the careers he intended his four sons to pursue. They were to become a doctor, a military officer, a professor of classical studies, and a Roman Catholic priest; his two daughters were only expected to marry well. Having no interest whatsoever in becoming a priest Max rejected his father’s will, left home and went to Paris where he mastered seven languages. Ultimately, after settling in Bulgaria, he became a professor of linguistics. After he returned to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, Max became involved with an effort to create a federation among south Slavic peoples, a yugo Slavia (‘yugo’ in Serbian and Croatian means south). He had become an adherent of the idea propounded by Roman Catholic Bishop Josef Strossmayer who was a leading politician in late 19th and early 20th century Croatia. -

123 Illegal weapons, gangs and violent extremism in Denmark DENMARK Lina Grip Denmark is a relatively small country with an exceptionally high standard of living, although the trends in Denmark’s Human Development Index show that its national development has flattened out in the past decade.1 The Global Peace Index ranked Denmark the second most peaceful country in the world in 2016, ranking very low in, for example, violent crimes and access to weapons.2 Denmark has limited expe- rience of terrorist attacks carried out with firearms, with only six incidents occur- ring in the past 36 years. Yet on 14-15 February 2015 Copenhagen was the site of two terrorist attacks carried out with firearms. In two shootings in different locations an armed man killed and injured several people in the course of less than 12 hours. This study seeks to investigate the illegal gun market dynamics in Denmark and how terrorists could have access to that market. Previous studies on these issues in Denmark have been rather limited. The present study’s analysis is therefore mainly based on police data on seized firearms and a few expert interviews. Where rele- vant, the analysis was enriched with complementary information from various sources (see Box 1). The first section lays out the key Danish actors in the fight against illicit firearms and national policies to deal with these firearms, including terrorists’ access to them. The following sections analyse the characteristics of the illicit firearms markets in Denmark and terrorists’ and violent extremists’ potential access to firearms on these markets. -

Literary Transmissions and the Fate of a Topic The Continental Spa in Post-1840 British, Russian and American Writing Benjamin Morgan University College London Thesis for the PhD in Comparative Literature ! 1! Abstract of Thesis: Around 1840 the Continental watering place took off as a destination of international appeal—and as a topic in an internationalizing print culture. My thesis, drawing on a broad range of theories of intertextuality, uses the case of the waters to model the farrago of transmissions, contacts and collisions that go into the making of a common-place in discourse. In particular I show how writing from multiple genres and national literatures helped establish the spa's identity as a deeply ambivalent locus of encounter—a venue that both tickled and deflated cosmopolitan ambition. Key points of reference include Dostoevskii's The Gambler, Edmund Yates's sensation novel Black Sheep (both 1867) and Henry James's spa fiction (‘Eugene Pickering’, Roderick Hudson and Confidence)—but also Punch and the Russian satirical journal The Alarm Clock (Budilk’nik), the travel writing of Joel Tyler Headley and Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, and Murray's Handbook for Travellers on the Continent. The elaboration of a topic is above all an exercise in collective (if not concerted) sign-making; and like any potent sign, I suggest with reference to temporally outlying works of resort fiction by Bruce Chatwin, Mikhail Tsypkin and W.G. Sebald, the nineteenth century's 'watering-place text' stubbornly refuses confinement to the age that produced it. ! 3!
