Forging The Progressive Path: Literary Assemblies And Enlightenment Societies In Azerbaijan, 1850-1928 Abstract This dissertation examines the role ethnic Azeri enlightenment societies in the Southeastern Caucasus played in the broader movement of secular modernist reform throughout the Muslim world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century. These societies, which published literature and periodicals, founded schools, built reading rooms, and sponsored musical and dramatic performances, were the primary means through which intellectuals in Azerbaijan mobilized projects of cultural reform. Starting in the mid-nineteenth-century almost every significant Azeri artist and intellectual was involved in these societies to some degree, either as active members or through benefiting from society patronage. Azeri reformist intellectuals were ambitious in their scope, and through the circulation of their periodicals, touring theater troupes, and the involvement of several leading Azeri figures in the constitutional movements in both Iran and the Ottoman Empire, they enjoyed influence well beyond the Turkic south Caucasus, reaching throughout the Ottoman Empire, Iran, and Central Asia. Analyzing a unique body of sources that include literary works, handwritten manuscripts, unpublished memoirs, periodicals, society account books, and correspondences, I illustrate the value of looking to so-called peripheries for more acute insights into the nineteenth and early twentieth-century logics of modernist reform and transformation in the Middle East. I also consider Azeri cultural reform movements in a global context of urbanization and cosmopolitanization, which lead to the creation of ethnic cultural spaces and aided in the rise of national identities. This dissertation also reconsiders the relationship between religious and secular intellectuals in Muslim societies, arguing that it was characterized not only by contention, but also negotiation, compromise, and intellectual exchange. Ethnographic and comparative research methods were used, including reviewing secondary sources (literature reviews) and qualitative research in the form of both semi- structured interviews conducted with native Azerbaijani speakers of varying ages and social strata living in the Azerbaijan Republic and open-ended structured interviews conducted via an online questionnaire with native English speakers living in the United States. The research led to the conclusion that alqış phrases should be defined as ―blessing formulas‖ in English. Most alqış phrases were determined to be grammatically distinguished by second or third person verbs in optative or imperative mood. They can have the expressive functions of being bono-recognitive, bono-petitive, malo-recognitive or malo-fugitive, although the most common are bono-petitive and malo-fugitive. Alqış phrases were also shown to be politeness strategies according to Levinson and Brown‘s politeness theory (used to protect the speaker‘s positive face or to protect the listener‘s negative face).

A country of bewildering diversity often riven by localized insurrections yet ruled through most of its long history by a single hereditary monarch. A country torn between its fierce pride in its unique culture and its determination to escape servitude to the West by adopting the in- stitutions and technologies that for the last few centuries have allowed Europeans to dominate the world. A country that for centuries made painful sacrifices of sovereign rights in exchange for protection from its predatory neighbor to the north, Russia. A country where the ideological ferment of the 1920s swept the traditional monarchy from power and replaced it with an autocrat bent on west, ernizing his country at any cost including breaking the back of the religious establishment. A country where a progressive president committed to pluralism is now vying with entrenched interests whose power depends on the monopoli- zation of ideas in general and religion in particular. This description applies equally to two countries and to two countries alone: Turkey and Iran. Indeed, Turkey and Iran who represent, along with Egypt, the great pow- ers of the Middle East are mirror images of one another. Each regards the other as an apostate from a faith they once shared in common.

The authors of the monograph provide a critical analysis of both the arguments and terms put forward primarily by Soviet Oriental school, and those introduced in modern nationalistic writings, which misrepresent the background and cultural heritage of Nezami. Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period.     42 Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Turkish Language in Iran (from the Ghaznavid Empire to the end of the Safavid Dynasty) Zivar Huseynova Khazar University The history of Turks in Iran goes back to very ancient times, and there are differences of opinion among historians about the Turks‟ ruling of Iranian lands. However, all historians accept the rulers of the Turkish territories since the Ghaznavid Empire. In that era, Turks took over the rule of Iran and took the first steps toward broadening the empire. The Ghaznavi Turks, continuing to rule according to the local government system in Iran, expanded their territories as far as India. The warmongering Turks, making up the majority of the army, spread their own language among the army and even in the regions they occupied. Even if they did not make a strong influence in many cultural spheres, they did propagate their languages in comparison to Persian. Thus, we come across many Turkish words in Persian written texts of that period. This can be seen using the example of the word “amirakhurbashi” or “mirakhurbashı” which is composed of Arabic elements.1 The first word inside this compound word is the Arabic “amir” (command), but the second and third words composing it are Turkish. Amirakhurbashi was the name of a high government officer rank. Aside from this example, the Turkish words “çomaq”(“chomak”) and “qalachur”(“kalachur”) or “qarachur” (“karachur”) are used as names for military ammunition. 2 It is likely that the word karachur, which means a long and curved weapon, was taken from the word qılınc (“kilinj,” sword) and is even noted as a Turkish word in many dictionaries.

According to the dominant literary-historical narrative, calls for “committed poetry” (she‘r-e mota‘ahhed) grew louder over the course of the radical 1970s, crescendoed with the monarch’s ouster, and then faded shortly thereafter as the consolidation of the Islamic Republic shattered any hopes among the once-influential Iranian Left for a secular, socio-economically equitable political order.     “The West” in the Eyes of the Iranian Intellectuals of the Interwar Years (1919–1939) Mehrzad Boroujerdi n 1929, after a lecture by Arnold Toynbee (from the notes of Denison Ross, the fi rst director of the School of Oriental and African Studies) on the subject of the modern- ization of the Middle East, a commentator said, Persia has not been modernized and has not in reality been Westernized. Look at the map: there is Persia right up against Russia. For the past hundred years, living cheek by jowl with Russia, Persia has maintained her complete independence of Russian thought. Although sixty to seventy percent of her trade for the past hundred years has been with Russia, Persia remains aloof in spirit and in practice. For the past ten years, Persia has been living alongside the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, and has remained free from any impregnation by their basic ideas. Her freedom is due to her cultural independence. For the safety of Persia it is essential, if she is to continue to develop on her own lines, that she should not attempt modernization, and I do not think that the attempt is being made. It is true that the Persians have adopted motor-cars and in small way railways. But let us remember that the Persians have always been in the forefront in anything of that sort. The fi rst Eastern nation to enter the Postal Union and to adopt a system of telegraphs was Persia, which country was also among the fi rst of the Eastern nations to join the League of Nations and to become an active member.

ABSTRACT The ancient Persian religion and customs that has been entered the people's life of this land is playing an undeniable role in the carpets design. What's more all about the connection between the carpet and the architecture is the mystical and Iranian twists from both original arts which is exacerbated and has certain originality. This article aims to identify architecture and carpet, their features and study the relationship between these two arts in the Islamic civilization of Iran with matching the symbols and signs used in it in order to achieve the meanings of the hidden unit in arts. It was written by relying on handed manuscripts resources and visiting carpet weaving workshops and architecture. This is a fundamental question how to make Link between both original and traditional art architecture and carpet. Comprehensive attention and review in overall design of the carpet presentation with its similarity to architecture, expresses the fundamentals of common principles. It provides a table on the plan formation of two original Iranian arts. This article seeks to identify common aspects between Iranian noble arts.
