APRIL 2018 SCHEHEREZADE FARAMARZI ome fifteen million of Iran’s eighty million people are Sunni Muslims, the country’s largest religious minority. Politically and economically disadvantaged, these Sunnis receive relatively lit- tle attention compared with other minorities and are concen- Strated in border areas from Baluchistan in the southeast, to Kurdistan in the northwest, to the Persian Gulf in the south. The flare up of tensions between regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran over Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen would seem to encourage interest in the state of Iranian Sunnis, if only because the Saudis present them- selves as defenders of the world’s Sunnis, and Iran the self-appointed champion of the Shia cause. So how do Iran’s Sunnis fare in a state where Shia theology governs al- most every aspect of life? How have they been affected by this regional rivalry? Are they stuck between jihadist and other extreme regional Sunni movements on the one hand, and the Shia regime’s aggres- sive policies on the other? Is there a danger that these policies could push some disgruntled Iranian Sunnis toward militancy and terrorism? A tour of Turkmen Sahra in the northeast of Iran near the Caspian Sea, and in Hormozgan on the Persian Gulf in 2015 and 2016 revealed some of the answers. More recent interviews were conducted by phone and in person in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and with European-based experts. “Being a Sunni in Iran means pain, fear, anxiety, restrictions,”1 said a young The Atlantic Council’s South woman in a southern Hormozgan village. -

The authors of the monograph provide a critical analysis of both the arguments and terms put forward primarily by Soviet Oriental school, and those introduced in modern nationalistic writings, which misrepresent the background and cultural heritage of Nezami. Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. I am following the early footsteps of comparative literature of Iran through the life of Fatemeh Sayyah (1902-1947), who is credited to be the founder of the discipline of Comparative literature in Iran, which started off as discipline with the introduction of a literary program for the first time at Tehran University in 1938. The very first academic comparative work with respect to Persian literature was done by an Indian scholar Umar Bin Mohammad Daudpota almost 11 years before its introduction in Iranian university curriculum, in 1927 at Cambridge University, with the title of ‘The effect of Arabic poetry on Persian poetry’. As a discipline, throughout its journey that comparative literature encountered in Iran as far as its development is concerned has had to overcome obstacles in its way. Many a time the program faced its closures and reopening. The process of literary interaction with French literature, its impact on Iranian literature and the outcome of this process, which I believe is more out of a protest than anything else, though it was leveraged to some extent by Pahlavi dynasty in a bid to protect its claims for monarchy. -

[email protected] Received: 28/02/2019 Accepted: 02/09/2019 Abstract To seek the intellectual roots of the Iranian constitutionalism, one has to be back to the pre- constitutionalism epoch. Indeed, in that time, Iranian elites had recognized the "deterioration" as the main crisis of Iran, which was rooted in the problem of “despotism.” Their strategy to overcome this crisis was the “Law.”However, the key point was that the majority of intellectual elites had thoughtcodifying the law is the only job that has to be done. Nevertheless, they did not pay attention to the mechanism of how to move from traditional legal logic to the new one in Iran. In the Iranian Tanzimat period, considering the two concepts of law in the European lands (the political and the rational concepts), the idea of law seems to base on the rational concept. In that time, debates were on the explanation, justification, and interpretation of the law. All the utterances were about: which law is the right one? What is the proper criterion to pass a legal regulation? Must the law be written based on nature, the tradition, the practices, or the divine Sharia? This article is going to assess the represented hypothesis by investigating some works of intellectual elites and historical documents of Iranian pre-constitutionalism. -

ISBN 978-91-554-9577-0 The present study explores the image of the Islamic Revolution, the concept of the hero, and the concept of martyrdom as depicted in ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in Iran compared with ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in exile. The method is based on a comparative analysis of these two categories of novels. Roland Barthes’s structuralism will be used as the theoretical tool for the analysis of the novels. The comparative analysis of the two groups of novels will be carried out within the framework of Foucault’s theory of discourse. Since its emergence, the Persian novel has been a scene for the dialogue between the five main discourses in the history of Iran since the Constitutional Revolution; this dialogue, in turn, has taken place within the larger framework of the dialogue between modernity and traditionalism. The main conclusion to be drawn from the present study is that the establishment of the Islamic Republic has merely altered the makeup of the scene, while the primary dialogue between modernity and traditionalism continues unabated. This dialogue can be heard in the way the Islamic Republic, the hero, and martyrdom are portrayed in the twenty post-Revolutionary novels in this study. -

Francophonie, i.e., the use of the French language and culture outside of France, has followed a winding path throughout several centuries in Persia (Iran). It grew from the interest of the Persian elite in a French society that neither engaged Persia militarily, nor attempted to compete with other European powers doing so. France's apparent lack of political interest in Persia became an official French diplomatic policy of "désintéressement," or "disinterest." This "hands off" policy nourished a Persian/Iranian fascination with French culture during the 19th and 20th centuries, as France was seen as a potential ally against the growing menace of Russia and Great Britain. As a result, and despite the growing political influence of other Western powers in Persia/Iran, the French language enjoyed the privileged status of first foreign Western language in Persia/Iran for almost a century, before being replaced by the English language due to the entry of the United States onto the international stage after the Second World War.
