Easter Greetings! By Word and Sacrament, we are sent to glorify God with our lives. This is our new mission statement for the parish. In Latin the dismissal at the end of the Mass is “Ite, Missa est.” The English word “Mass” comes from that Latin word, “Missa”. The response to “Ite, Missa est” is “Deo Gratias” or “Thanks be to God”. So already we have a connection between “Mass” and “Eucharist”. Now the difficult question is “for what are we giving thanks at the end of the Mass?” You see the Latin expression “Ite, Missa est” is very compact and a bit enigmatic. None of our English translations are exact. Literally it would translate as “Go. Is sent.” Or “Go. Has been sent.” Who or what has been sent? The Latin does not actually say. The only clue it gives us is that the subject of “missa est” is feminine gender, which in Latin does not mean that it is a female person, but only that it is a noun or equivalent that uses the feminine form. The customary answer today would supply “ecclesia” as the subject, giving us, “Go, the church (or assembly) has been sent.” Sort of like, “Class dismissed.” Note, that dis-missed has the same root as “missa”. Of course that would make the “Thanks be to God” seem almost like, “Thanks be to God we are done with that.” Perhaps some people feel that way by the end of Mass, but it is hardly the way we are meant to feel. Rather, the “Thanks be to God” speaks of gratitude in recognition for a great gift received. What is that great gift? Simply that we “the Church” have been sent on a mission? Let us consider our current English options: “Go forth, the Mass is ended.” So what is the “Mass” that we are giving thanks for having received as a gift? “Go and announce the of the Lord.” How have we experienced the Gospel as a gift that we are to ‘announce’? “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.” How I have I experienced the Lord at Mass so as to want to glorify him? Or finally just “Go in peace,” which is just a plain dismissal. In each case there is some gift, whose understanding is presupposed, for which we give thanks. What is that gift? St. Thomas Aquinas provides us with an answer. He wrote: “From this the Mass derives its name [missa]; because the priest sends [mittit] his prayers up to God through the angel, as the people do through the priest. Or else because Christ is the victim [hostia] sent [missa] to us: accordingly the deacon on festival days ‘dismisses’ the people at the end of the mass, by saying: ‘Ite, missa est,’ that is, the victim [hostia] has been sent [missa est] to God through the angel, so that it may be accepted by God.” (Summa Theoolgiae, IIIa q83, a4, ad9) The key here is that St. Thomas Aquinas supplies the Latin word “hostia” (feminine gender) meaning “victim” as the missing subject for “missa est”. Note that the word “victim” means “victim” offered in sacrifice, not “victim” of a crime. So now the dismissal can be translated and expanded as meaning: “Go, the victim has been sent to the throne of God and has been accepted.” The victim is Jesus Christ himself, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. The victim is his Body and Blood of Christ. The result of the victim being ‘sent’ to God is then the renewal of the covenant here and now, the forgiveness of sins, the reconciliation of man to God, in a word the result of the sacrifice is salvation and peace. “Thanks be to God.” The contemporary interpretation, which involves the “sending” of the Church, the “Ecclesia”, to announce the Gospel or to glorify by God by our way of life, presupposes the gift of salvation and reconciliation brought about through the “sending” of the victim to God. We are not giving thanks just for remembering what Jesus did for us 2,000 years ago, but because what he did has been made actual and effective here and now through the offering of the sacrifice of the Mass. This is expressed in the prayer over the offerings assigned to the 2nd Sunday of Time. “Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated, the work of our redemption is accomplished. Through Christ our Lord.” “Ite, missa est.” “It has been accomplished.” (Cf. Jn 19:30) “Thanks be to God.” Peace, Joy and Love, Fr. Brian J. Roby

School Happenings Trinity High School Baseball had their first win last week as Landon Huff pitched a no-hitter. Congratulations boys! Softball had an exciting comeback against Ohio County. They were down 7-0 and came back and won 8-7. Great job girls!

God has a plan for each of us. He wants excellence from each of us. I can honestly tell you that this year has been tough on all of us at the schools, but we have been blessed with students that are grateful and have done everything to help us stay in session. I know we have not done everything perfectly and there has been so much heartbreak and loss in so many forms. Some have lost loved ones, some have lost time with others and missed out on special family time, some have missed being in the “church”, some have lost events that can never be redone, some have felt loss of freedoms and some have felt loss in other ways. I think it is safe to say that we have all felt “loss” this year in some form. What I can say, is that when I look back on this year, I will remember that at St. Mary of the Woods School and Trinity High School, we did everything we could with student welfare in mind. We worked to make sure they were loved, safe, and cared for. I know that some feel we should have done other things like fight against policies and some feel we should have been stricter with policies. We have people that feel both sides, but what I can say for certain, that every decision made was made in the interest of the teachers and the children. I will remember that we did our very best to educate these children in the FAITH and love them and care for them! I pray that everyone can look back on this unprecedented time and know that he/she did their very best as well! I would like to personally thank our administrators, teachers and staff at THS and SMWS for going above and beyond this school year to make it the best it could possibly be! Let’s finish this school year strong!

Happy Sunday!

St Mary’s Evangelization Expectations Survey

Comment: I think the church needs to work on getting back to tradition and scrap this “Protestant Evangelization plan”! You have to start with the young, put catechism back in school/PREP/RCIA, make the sacraments of Christ the focal point of the parish, bring back communion on the tongue! Back before the Horn center was to be built there were groups put together much like this “evangelization plan”… more people signed up to be in the “building of the Horn center and sports” then in groups on increase vocations to the priesthood and religious life! Look back at the alumni of the graduating classes from the school… how many are or still are practicing/good Catholics? There is too much emphasis on sports and not enough on God and the catholic faith. Some of the books at the school AND on the adoration book shelf are more Harry Potter related or Thomas Merton related then good ole books on the lives of the saints!!! Why must the teachers quote Buddhists or Hindus or Freemasons or black panther activists? Why aren’t they geared towards SAINTS????? At this point, I think getting back to the proper religious formation of the young will be best for our future! Teaching catechism, rosary, PENANCE, and traditional devotions will secure the future of the church! We live in a culture of death and need the hard truths proclaimed lest we become complacent like the Israelites!

Response: Our schools and our PREP (now called Families of Faith) use curriculum that must be approved by the United Stated Conference of Catholic Bishops. All curriculum must follow and adhere to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Each publisher that is used has to submit their text for approval from this body of Bishops. I assure you that both school and Families of Faith have textbooks that fall within those guidelines. Our Families of Faith textbooks cover one section of the Catechism each year in a four-year cycle. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) uses “Journey of Faith” by Liguori Publications. Each topic for the sessions is supported and taught from the Catechism and is taught by Fr. Brian, Fr. Jude or Joe Bland, all holding graduate level degrees in Theology. In all of our Faith. Formation here on this campus, Sacraments are the focal point. Everything we do leads to Christ. Our purpose is to Make Disciples. From teaching a Second grader about First Communion to coaching volleyball to bringing adults into the Catholic Faith, everything is about making disciples.

Prior to learning of these responses, both schools have focused specifically this year on the lives of saints. The saint of the week is provided to the teachers and used as part of the curriculum. There is a Hallway of Saints in St. Mary of the Woods School and every year the students have a day to dress as a saint and research the life of the saint chosen. At Trinity High School, there are banners with saint images and a quote from the saint to inspire students to see the saints as true role models for their lives.

You can do both sports and be a good Catholic. Much evangelization takes place on the field and the court. One example of this was represented by our St. Mary of the Woods Cross Country Team. Due to COVID-19 regulations all coaches had to be distanced from all runners. Right before running, the team came together in prayer. It was a great representation for all!

May Intercession for the St. Mary Evangelization Plan

We pray in a special way for the Technology Committee. As we enter the world of digital evangelization, technology is one more pathway to help others encounter Jesus. May those who serve on the technology committee use their gifts and talents to serve the people of God. We pray also for those who clean the church. While often overlooked, this ministry ensures we all have a clean, safe and welcoming space in which to worship our Lord. May those who serve in this ministry clean with a joyful heart.

Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my whole will. All that I am and all that I possess, you have given me: I surrender it all to You to be disposed of according to Your will. Give me only Your love and Your grace; with these I will be rich enough and will desire nothing more. Amen. -St Ignatius of Loyola
