These hermits took their religious vows in India as Christian saṃnyāsis, in the hands of Father Bede, and then returned to California to ignite a contemplative renewal in the Christian dispirited tradition. Some tried to integrate such Indian tradition in the Benedictine order, while others traced new paths. KEY WORDS Bede; Griffiths; California; saṃnyāsa; Camaldoli; Christianity Preliminary Remarks— Sources and Definitions The present paper profited greatly from its main sources, Sr. Michaela Terrio and Br. Francis Ali, hermits at Sky Farm Hermitage, who generously shared with me their memories of Bede Griffiths as well as spiritual insights of their life of renunciation as Christian saṃnyāsis in California. Several of the personalities mentioned in this article are personally known to the author. I offer a definition of the main terms used here:saṃnyāsis ‘ ’ are the renouncers, the acosmic hermits in the tradition of the Gītā; ‘saṃnyāsa’ is the ancient Indian consecration to acosmism and also the fourth and last stage (aśhrama) in the growth of human life; ‘guru’ is a polysemic word in India; its theological meaning depends on the religious tradition. -

303 ART. IX.—On, the Interpretation of the Veda. BY J. MUIR, Esq. I AM led to make some remarks on the subject of this paper by a passage in Mr. Cowell'3 preface to the fourth volume of the late Professor Wilson's translation of the Big- veda, which appears to me unduly to depreciate the services which have already been rendered by those eminent scholars both in Germany and in England who have begun to apply the scientific processes of modern philology to the explanation of this ancient hymn-collection. Mr. Cowell admits (p. vi.),— " As Vaidik studies progress, and more texts are published and studied, fresh light will be thrown on these records of the ancient world; and we may gradually attain a deeper insight into their meaning than the mediaeval Hindus could possess, just as a modern scholar may understand Homer more thoroughly than the Byzantine scholiasts." But he goes on to say :— "It is easy to depreciate native commentators, but it is not so easy to supersede them; and while I would by no means uphold Sayana as infallible, I confess that, in the present early stage of Vaidik studies in Europe, it seems to me the safer course to follow native tradition rather than to accept too readily the arbitrary con- jectures which continental scholars so often hazard." Without considering it necessary to examine, or defend, all the explanations of particular words proposed by the foreign lexicographers alluded to by Mr. Cowell, I yet venture to think that those scholars have been perfectly justified in com- mencing at once the arduous task of expounding the Veda on the principles of interpretation which they have adopted and enunciated. -

Christ is prophesied, witnessed, predicted, typified, and prefigured; but apart from a few alleged christophanic appearances, he is largely the subject of another, historically subsequent Testament. This thesis surveys the christological approaches to the Old Testament since the early 20th century breach made within historicism, introduces a patristic mindset, proposes an ontological foundation to a sacramental (real-presence) approach, then demonstrates this through a reading of Zechariah 9-14. The goal is to bring together three arenas of study—exegetical, historical, theological—and demonstrate how their united lens clarifies the substantial referent of Scripture, namely Christ. The character of the OT witness is thus presented in christological terms, suggesting a reading that recognizes the divine person within the text itself, at home in the sensus literalis. By way of analogy to the Cyrillian hypostatic union and a Lutheran eucharistic comprehension, the task is to show how one encounters the hypostasis of Christ by means of the text’s literal sense. -

Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’. ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL Solemn Mass Twenty first Sunday of the Year 23 August 2020 10.30am WELCOME to St Mary’s Cathedral which stands in the centre of Sydney as a Christian statement of grace and beauty. Generations of artists have bequeathed to it their magnificent gifts in stone and glass, designing a unique space of solace and prayer within this vibrant city. This Cathedral represents the spiritual origins of the Catholic Church in Australia. It is one of Sydney’s most treasured historic buildings and one of the finest examples of English-style gothic churches in the world. William Wilkinson Wardell, the 19th century architect, dreamed of a gothic structure shaped from the local yellow-block sandstone on which this city is built. The building was finally completed 100 years after the architect’s death. The Cathedral is dedicated to Mary, Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians. THE CATHEDRAL CHOIR St Mary’s Cathedral Choir is the oldest musical institution in Australia. In 1818 a group of choristers was formed to sing Vespers before the Blessed Sacrament in the Dempsey household, the centre of Catholic worship in the penal colony. After the establishment of St Mary’s Cathedral in 1833 the successors of these choristers formed the permanent Cathedral Choir. In faithfulness to the Benedictine English tradition from which the Cathedral’s founders came, the Choir is formed of men and boys, preserving the historical character of Catholic liturgical and musical heritage. St Mary’s is the only Catholic Cathedral in Australia to have an on-site Choir School where the twenty-four boy choristers are educated. -

THE SYRO-MALANKARA CATHOLIC CHURCH THE FIRST MALANKARA CATHOLIC CHURCH ASSEMBLY TRIVANDRUM, 21-23 SEPTEMBER, 2011 FROM EXPERIENCE TO TESTIMONY THEMATIC GUIDELINES FOR STUDY AND DISCUSSION Dr. Abraham Mar Julios (Chairman, Core-committee) FOREWORD The Holy Episcopal Synod of the Syro-Malankara Church, had entrusted me with the task of preparing the Lineamenta or Guidelines for the First Malankara Church Assembly, to be held in September 2011. Evangelization was selected as Theme of the Assembly. A half-day consultation was done at Shantinilayam, Tiruvalla with a small Group of four people, consisting of Msgr. Antony Kackanatt, Sister Dr. Namita SIC, Mr. Jomi Thomas and me. The first draft of the Lineamenta was presented in Malayalam before the Episcopal Synod, in December 2010, and the Synod Fathers suggested, I should provide an English version as basic text, which could be translated also into Tamil, Kannada and Hindi. The Draft had to be reworked for theological correctness and systematic presentation. The Key Bible verse we have selected is Isaiah 6:8 “Lord, here I am! Send me”! The Leitmotiv is “From Experience to Testimony”. The Theme of the Assembly has to be discussed and prayed over by all the sections of the Malankara Church. The message has to be imbibed by the whole people of God and should percolate through the cross sections of the Church. The Eparchial Assemblies and the Church Assembly should motivate us to rededicate ourselves to the great cause of Announcing the Good News all over the world and winning souls for the Kingdom of God, and contributing to the growth of the Church. -

This article explores the person that he was, the vision that guided him and the challenge he offers to the Indian priests. The author also outlines the main influences on his life and his impact on the intellectuals of India. His life of commitment to and identification with the poor even at the cost of risking his own life is a commendable challenge to all of us. He was a true humanist who lived and died for the poor and the marginalized. Keywords: Sebastian Kappen, Passionate humanist, Liberation Theologian, Commitment to the Poor and Marginalised. Sebastian Kappen (1924-1993) was a Catholic priest who was passionately committed to the poor and drown-trodden. This article explores the person that he was, the vision that guided him and the challenge he offers to the Indian priests.
