During the years 1262 through 1264, the Icelanders agreed to pay tax to the Norwegian king and thus Iceland evolved into a more organized and hierarchical society. Representing the Nor- wegian crown, the Icelandic chieftains developed a stronger aristocratic identity. Their mutual understanding grew and so did their sense of being members of a chivalry. Emphasizing certain sexual norms was a way for the elite to define its own group and sexuality functioned as an important com ponent when forming an aristocratic self-image. Through analyses of Icelandic romances and other sources, this disserta- tion shows that sexuality was frequently used to make distinctions of various kinds. Sexuality served as a marker to distinguish the chivalrous from the common, the hu- man from the monstrous and the masculine from the feminine. In the romances, a homosocial pattern emerges, reflecting changing concep tions of male friendship in the aristocracy. In these narratives, it is the friendship between equal knights that matters. Chivalrous men seek each other’s company and the strong bonds between them often affect the way they act sexually. A chivalrous knight is able to control his sexual desires and he also considers the consequences of his actions. These characteristics distinguish him from other men in the romances. The heathen, for example, acts without respecting the rules of chivalry. He lacks the ability to rea- son and his urges cannot be subdued. These traits apply to the berserk as well. Sexuality was also important in distinguishing aristocratic women from other wo- men. In the late Middle Ages, Icelandic aristocrats’ interest in virginity increa sed – partially as a result of a stronger patrilineal way of thinking. However, the aristocratic approach to virginity was tinged with ambivalence. In the romances, there is some- thing both enticing and frightening about the sexuality of young women. The maiden is adored because of her chastity and pure thoughts. On the other hand, her lack of sexual experience makes it difficult for her to control her sexual desires and to resist men. Under min doktorandtid har jag ibland vistats i andra vetenskapliga miljöer, och det har tillfört arbetet med avhandlingen mycket. Under två månader hösten 2004 besökte jag Senter for studier i vikingtid och nor- disk middelalder vid Univer sitetet i Oslo, och jag vill rikta ett särskilt tack till Jón Viðar Sigurðsson för givan de diskussioner om mitt avhandlingsämne. Sen som maren 2006 var jag två månader i Köpenhamn. Stort tack till Peter Spring borg vid Den Arnamagnæanske Samling som hjälpte till att ordna vis- telsen där. Ett mo bi litetsstipendium från Nordic Centre for Medieval Studies gjorde det möjligt för mig att besöka Senter for middelalder studier (Centre for Medieval Studies) vid Uni versitetet i Bergen under två månader hösten 2007.     Of Magical Beings and Where to Find Them On the Concept of álfar in the Translated riddarasǫgur FELIX LUMMER 1. Introduction The process of translation attempts to enable the understanding of for­ eign concepts and ideas, something which naturally involves the use of both words and concepts that are already extant in the receiving culture. This natu rally involves linguistic problems, but more interestingly often results in the overlapping, alteration and merging of concepts, something that can have long­term consequences on language and cultural under­ standing. This article aims to explore how the Old Norse mythological concept of the álfar in the Nordic countries (especially Iceland due to its pre­served­manu­scripts)­may­have­been­altered­through­the­influence­of­the­ trans lation of Old French romances into Norwegian and Icelandic during the Middle Ages. As will be shown below, the mythological concept that lies behind the introduction and use of the female variant of álfar (sg. álfr) known as álfkonur (sg. álfkona) in Old Norse literature (and culture) appears to have been that of the Old French fée (pl. fées). Indeed, prior to the translation of foreign (especially Continental) works, some of which appear to have been initiated by the Norwegian King Hákon Hákonar son (1204–1263) in the early thirteenth century, the álfkona (and motifs associated with her) seem to have been mostly absent in Old Norse Lummer, Felix. 2021. My material comprises of three versions of one and the same text, well spread geographically and temporarily. The first version is the Old French chanson de geste Elie de Saint-Gille as preserved in the manuscript BNF 25516 from the second part of the 13 th century; the second version is Elís saga , a rewriting of the Norwegian translation of an Old French version, as found in the Norwegian manuscript De la Gardie 4- 7 Folio from around 1270; the third version is an Icelandic rewriting and adaptation of Elís saga , as it appears in the manuscript Holm Perg 6 4to from around 1400-1425. First of all, I will give a short presentation of the layout, content and provenance of the three manuscripts. Thereafter, I will comment on the possible implications these physical characteristics may have for our understanding of the production, transmission, reception and function of the three versions in their respective codicological and cultural contexts.

Truth-claims and defensive narrators in Icelandic romance-sagas RALPH O’CONNOR University of Aberdeen Straining the bounds of credibility was an activity in which many mediaeval Icelandic saga-authors indulged. In §25 of Göngu-Hrólfs saga, the hero Hrólfr Sturlaugsson wakes up from an enchanted sleep in the back of beyond to find both his feet missing. Somehow he manages to scramble up onto his horse and find his way back to civilisation – in fact, to the very castle where his feet have been secretly preserved by his bride-to-be. Also staying in that castle is a dwarf who happens to be the best healer in the North.1 Hann mælti: ‘… skaltu nú leggjast niðr við eldinn ok baka stúfana.’ Hrólfr gerði svâ; smurði hann þá smyrslunum í sárin, ok setti við fætrna, ok batt við spelkur, ok lèt Hrólf svâ liggja þrjár nætr. Leysti þá af umbönd, ok bað Hrólf upp standa ok reyna sik. Hrólfr gerði svâ; voru honum fætrnir þá svâ hægir ok mjúkir, sem hann hefði á þeim aldri sár verit. ‘He said, … “Now you must lie down by the fire and warm the stumps”. ‘Hrólfr did so. Then he [the dwarf] applied the ointment to the wounds, placed the feet against them, bound them with splints and made Hrólfr lie like that for three nights. Then he removed the bandages and told Hrólfr to stand up and test his strength. Hrólfr did so; his feet were then as efficient and nimble as if they had never been damaged.’2 This is rather hard to believe – but our scepticism has been anticipated by the saga-author.

    Manuscript overview This overview lists all manuscripts from the Arnamagnæan Collection from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries that are known to have been changed physically according to text boundaries. The overview does not claim to be exhaustive. Instead, it is supposed to be understood as a working tool based on the indications found in the major secondary literature. During the research of the project, I was able to check many manuscripts and update the entries. However, due to the overwhelming number of manuscripts that turned out to be relevant, numerous indications still remain to be verified or need further research. Nevertheless, this overview presents the first systematic register over physically altered paper manuscripts in the Arnamagnæan Collection and will hopefully facilitate future studies. Please note the following principles applied: • Manuscripts are referred to based on their current form and shelfmark. Generally, each manuscript occupies one row in the overview. In some cases, however, parts of the same manuscript are registered on several consecutive lines in order to improve the readability. A note following the shelfmark indicates this fact. • In the first column, shelfmarks are given in their complete form. Where considered relevant for the identification, Roman numerals in accordance to Kålund’s printed catalogue (1889‐1894) are added. In the other columns, shelfmarks are abbreviated as follows: When mentioning parts of a manuscript in the same row, only the codicological unit (CU) and – if different – the Roman numeral are given. When referring to another manuscript, on the other hand, the indicator of the collection is usually omitted for Arnamagnæan manuscripts, i.e.

De fleste af de oversatte sagaer stammer enten fra latin (fx Trójumanna saga og Breta sögur) eller fra oldfransk (fx Tristrams saga og de fleste dele af Karlamagnús saga). En enkelt menes at være oversat fra tysk, nemlig Þiðreks saga, hvis forlæg dog ikke kendes; det t0r heller ikke udelukkes, at enkelte andre sagaer, der nu antages at være forfattet pá islandsk, kunne være oversat fra tysk, sk0nt deres forlæg ikke er fundet, fx Konráðs saga eller Bœrings saga. Nogle, máske de fleste, af de hándskrifter pá latin eller oldfransk der er brugt af oversætterne, er skrevet i England. Har nogle ridder- sagaer haft forlæg der ikke blot var skrevet i England, men ogsá pá engelsk? Inden for andre genrer end riddersagaen er der meget fá old-island- ske tekster der er oversat fra engelsk. Sá vidt vides, gælder det kun nogle tekster i to andre genrer. Et par homilier, der er bevaret i Hauks- bók, synes at være oversat delvis efter Ælfric, omkring 1200 eller máske f0r. I det 15. árh. er en del islandske œvintýri oversat efter middelengelske exempla. Se herom Einar G.
