An abbey with important reach throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The Benedictine Abbey of Cluny was founded in the 10th century. ACCESS Over the centuries, its vast Abbey church extended its influence over the whole of Europe. Explore the many monastic buildings and remains of the vast church, the “Maïor Ecclesia”, partially destroyed after the French Revolution. The Galileo Passage presents reliquaries from the treasury of the abbey. The cloister is striking in its dimensions and offers a view of the chapter house. Beneath its 18th century frame, the granary houses the capitals of the great church, masterpieces of Roman sculpture. The museum of art and archaeology was installed in Abbot Jean de Bourbon’s Palace, built in the 15th century. Many sculpted elements from the medieval abbey and town are displayed on its walls.
