About the Gamer Symphony Orchestra The University of Maryland’s In the fall of 2005, Michelle Eng decided she wanted to be in Gamer Symphony Orchestra an orchestral group that played video game music. With four others http://umd.gamersymphony.org/ from the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra, she founded GSO to achieve that dream. By the time of the ensemble’s first public performance in the spring of 2006, its size had quadrupled. Today, GSO provides a musical and social outlet to over 100 members. It is the world’s first college-level ensemble solely dedicated to video game music as an emerging art form. Aside from its concerts, the orchestra also runs “Deathmatch for Charity,” a video game tournament in the spring. All proceeds benefit Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., via the “Child’s Play” charity (www.childsplay.org). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We love getting feedback from our fans! The respective owners reserve all rights ABSTRACT The international success of Japanese game design provides an example of the invisibility of female game composers, as well as of gendered identification in game music production and sound design. Yoko Shimomura, the female composer who produced the iconic soundtrack for the 1991 arcade game, Street Fighter II (Capcom 1991), seems to have been invisible to game developers and music producers, which is partly due to the way in which the game is credited as a team effort. Regardless of their personal gender identity, game composers respond to themed briefs by 107 108 The Street Fighter Lady drawing on transnational musical ideas and gendered stereotypes that resonate with the Global Popular. Game music, as imagined as suitable for hyper-masculine game arcades, seems to draw on a masculinist aesthetic developed in Hollywood compositions. The discussion of the music of Street Fighter II and the musical versions it inspired, nevertheless highlights that although seemingly simplified gendered stereotypes are reproduced within the game, gender identification itself can be complex within the context of game music composition. -

Stephanie Lam ENGL 2116-021 Set of Instructions 3 Aug 2017 Ness is the silent protagonist from an RPG-game called Earthbound, How to Draw and Color Ness released by Nintendo in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment from Earthbound System. He lives in Onett alongside his mother and sister. One day, a futuristic warrior arrives in a meteorite that crashed in Ness’ hometown. The warrior, named Buzz-Buzz, tells Ness about a doomed future and that Ness is one of the Chosen Four who could save the world. Ness sets out on a journey across Eagleland to find the rest of the Chosen Four and put a stop to the evil encroaching his homeland. Throughout the game, the player mostly controls Ness, though in some parts he or she controls one of the other Chosen Four. Ness uses bats or yoyos to fight, and wields pychokinetic powers called PSI. He and his friends fight wacky enemies they encounter in the overworld, such as the New Age Retro Hippie or the Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom, in a turn-based party battle system. The game is mostly known for its offbeat humor and heartwarming moments. Although Earthbound sold well in Japan, it did poorly in the United States because of a horrible ad campaign. Its commercial failure in the states caused the game to fall into obscurity. Physical copies of the game sell for over a hundred US dollars and complete sets can even go in the thousands range. The game has developed a cult following which hopes for Nintendo to someday turn its attention to the series. -

One of the leading game systems to emerge afterwards was the Japanese company Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Nintendo became a fan favorite with the introduction of popular games such as Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Paperboy, Donkey Kong, and many more. Several popular games were spin-offs of other games, for instance Donkey Kong led to a Super Mario Bros spin-off. Some games were sold as combinations, giving players an option to play different games on the same cartridge. One such popular “bonus game” was Duck Hunt, which was originally featured as a “B-Side” game on the original Super Mario Bros., which was often included with the original NES console. However, Duck Hunt was a unique game, which required additional hardware. Throughout the later part of the 20th century and early 21st century, gaming systems continued to advance. NES, along with its competitors such as Sony Playstation and Sega introduced several models and different generations. Nintendo introduced Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and most recently Nintendo Wii. Several classic and popular games from the original NES were re-introduced or re-imagined on the newer consoles; however, some games remain only a memory to the gaming fan base. Duck Hunt was a unique game that is physically attached to the original NES. As a unique gaming experience that was never truly Losben 2 replicated, Duck Hunt is a historic game experience that needs to be preserved.
