It incorporates comparable data from the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and the Elizabeth I. Much of the analysis is quantitative in nature: chapters compare the appointments of justices of the peace during the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, and reveal that purges of the commissions of the peace were far more common than is generally believed. Furthermore, purges appear to have been religiously- based, especially during the reign of Elizabeth I. There is a gap in the quantitative data beginning in 1569, only eleven years into Elizabeth I’s reign, which continues until 1584. In an effort to compensate for the loss of quantitative data, this dissertation analyzes a different primary source, William Lambarde’s guidebook for JPs, Eirenarcha. The fourth chapter makes particular use of Eirenarcha, exploring required duties both in and out of session, what technical and personal qualities were expected of JPs, and how well they lived up to them. -

The present time seems propitious for publishing it, in the hope of an irenic rather than a polemic effect. He is beating down high pretensions and sectarian prejudices, which have stood in the way of Christian reunion. It is in the belief that the claims made for what is called "the Historic Episcopate" have been, as Dr. Liddon admits, a chief obstacle to Christian unity, that I have undertaken to present the results of a long study of its history, in the hope that this will promote, not dissension, but harmony. If in any place I have spoken in what seems a polemic tone, let this be set down to the stress of discussion, and not to any lack of charity or respect for what was for centuries the church of my fathers, as it still is that of most of my kindred. -

THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system. -

MALS Mentor: Michael Collins, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Beginning in the 1530’s, groups of scholars, poets, artists and Catholic Church prelates came together in Italy in a series of salons and group meetings to try to move themselves and the Church toward a concept of faith that was centered on the individual’s personal relationship to God and grounded in the gospels rather than upon Church tradition. The most prominent of these groups was known as the spirituali, or spiritual ones, and it included among its members some of the most renowned and celebrated people of the age. And yet, despite the fame, standing and unrivaled access to power of its members, the group failed utterly to achieve any of its goals. By 1560 all of the spirituali were either dead, in exile, or imprisoned by the Roman Inquisition, and their ideas had been completely repudiated by the Church. The question arises: how could such a “conspiracy of geniuses” have failed so abjectly? To answer the question, this paper examines the careers of three of the spirituali’s most prominent members, Vittoria Colonna, Michelangelo and Reginald Pole. -

The research conveys Melanchthon’s mediating influence in disputes between Reformation churches, in particular between the German churches and King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1539. The political background to those events is presented in detail, so that Melanchthon’s place in this history can be better understood. This is not a study of Melanchthon’s overall theology. In this work, I have shown how the Saxons and the conservative and reform-minded English considered matters of conscience and adiaphora. I explore the German and English unification discussions throughout the negotiations delineated in this dissertation, and what they respectively believed about the Church’s authority over these matters during a tumultuous time in European history. The main focus of this work is adiaphora, or those human traditions and rites that are not necessary to salvation, as noted in Melanchthon’s Confessio Augustana of 1530, which was translated into English during the Anglo-Lutheran negotiations in 1536. Melanchthon concluded that only rituals divided the Roman Church and the Protestants. -

Jelica Stojanović THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT Podgorica 2020 MILOš KOVAčEVIć THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT, MADE UP OF STRAY PATHS Only two years have passed from the two hundredth anni- versary of the beginning of Vuk Karadžić’s struggle for “intro- ducing the folk language in literature”, that is to say, from the introduction of the Serbian folk language in the Serbian literary language, or to put it in the more modern phrasing of today: the standard language. The beginning of that struggle is connected to the year 1814, when, in the royal city of Vienna, Vuk’s first grammar book came out: The Orthography of the Serbian Lan- guage Based on the Speech of the Common Folk, which dealt with resolving the three most important standard-related issues: a) the issue of the Serbian orthography, b) the issue of the morpho- logical structure of the Serbian language, and c) the issue of the name of the language and its national boundaries. Rare are the languages, if, indeed, there are any, which have had such a turbulent history of two hundred years. The histor- ical development of a language can be followed at two histor- ical levels: that of its internal and that of its external history. -

1 J S Studia eologica Varsaviensia UKSW The Greek-Latin Dispute Over the Communion of Infants*1 e problem of the infant communion, which in the Catholic-Orthodox con- frontation is rather secondary, has not yet been elaborated on. However, it is an interesting example for the history of theology of how the same theological problem can have different contents and functions, depending on the historical context in which it is raised. Starting Point of the Dispute e communion of infants was abandoned during the $%&' century in the West- ern Church. is was the result of a new Eucharistic spirituality initiated by a reaction to the Berengarian doctrine. e guiding principle of this spirituality was to emphasize the truth about concomitance, and its most characteristic fea- ture was an increase in respect for the saints. e cessation of the communion of infants was motivated by the danger of unintentional insult, which lasts as long as the child is not able to distinguish the Eucharist from ordinary bread. e Eastern Church did not experience a similar reaction, which of course increased mutual differences in spirituality and Eucharistic customs. e oldest text on the infant communion dispute comes from the famous Libellus de erroribus Armenorum, the official author of which is Pope Benedict XII ($%%*-$%*+), while the actual authors were the two Latinising Armenian bishops. ey counted $$0 Armenian heresies, superstitions and abuses. e publication of this magazine by the Pope provoked a lively reaction in the Arme- nian Church. e pleas were mostly generalised and exaggerated, included in the form of accusations. -

Mary I, Queen of England: How ‘Bloody’ Was She? By Johanna Strong Johanna is a PhD student at the University of Winchester One significant formal event in Winchester Cathedral has consequences which are felt to this day: the July 1554 wedding of Mary I – England’s first crowned queen regnant, that is: queen in her own right – and Philip II of Spain. Their marriage has significantly influenced how Mary is remembered in the English historical narrative and her legacy is very much tied to Philip’s unpopularity in England and Spain’s expansionist hopes in the early modern world. It is their wedding, their marriage, and the legacy of Mary’s reign which is the focus of this article. Mary’s Life and Reign in Contemporary Eyes Mary was born on 18 February 1516 to Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII and was the only one of Catherine of Aragon’s children to live past childhood. As a result of the breakdown of her parents’ marriage, Mary suffered greatly watching her mother exiled from court and left to die alone at Kimbolton in 1536. Just under 20 years later, Mary’s situation changed drastically when she was proclaimed queen in July 1553 after Lady Jane Grey’s brief tenure on the throne. On 25 July 1554, Mary married Philip II of Spain at Winchester Cathedral in an elaborate ceremony with a banquet following at Wolvesey Castle. Most of the time when heirs to the throne become king or queen, their suffering and unhappiness ends. Unfortunately for Mary, this was not the case.
