    CHAPTER SIX `BARLEY AND PEACE': THE BRITISH UNION OF FASCISTS IN NORFOLK, SUFFOLK AND ESSEX, 1938-1940 1. Introduction The local impact of falling agricultural prices and the looming prospectof war with Germany dominated Blackshirt political activity in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex from 1938. Growing resentment within the East Anglian farming community at diminishing returns for barley and the government's agricultural policy offered the B. U. F. its most promising opportunity to garner rural support in the eastern counties since the `tithe war' of 1933-1934. Furthermore, deteriorating Anglo-German relations induced the Blackshirt movement to embark on a high-profile `Peace Campaign', initially to avert war, and, then, after 3 September 1939, to negotiate a settlement to end hostilities. As part of the Blackshirts' national peace drive, B. U. F. Districts in the area pursued a range of propaganda activities, which were designed to mobilise local anti-war sentiment. Once again though, the conjunctural occurrence of a range of critical external and internal constraints thwarted B. U. F. efforts to open up political space in the region on a `barley and peace' platform. 2. The B. U. F., the `Barley Crisis' and the Farmers' March, 1938-1939 In the second half of 1938, falling agricultural prices provoked a fresh wave of rural agitation in the eastern counties. Although the Ministry of Agriculture's price index recorded a small overall reduction from 89.0 to 87.5 during 1937-1938, cereals due heavy from 1938 and farm crops were particularly affected to the yields the harvests. Gedenken an den jüdischen Widerstand anlässlich des 75. Jahrestages der Aufstände im Warschauer Ghetto und den deutschen Vernichtungslagern Treblinka und Sobibor In Jahr 2018 begeht die internationale Staatengemeinschaft den 75. Jahrestag des Aufstandes im Warschauer Ghetto vom 19. April 1943 sowie der Aufstände in den deutschen Vernichtungslagern Treblinka vom 2. August 1943 und Sobibor vom 14. Oktober 1943. Diese bewaffneten Erhebungen stellen – neben dem Auf- stand des jüdischen Sonderkommandos in Auschwitz-Birkenau am 7. Oktober 1944 – die eindrücklichsten Beispiele des Widerstands durch Jüdinnen und Juden gegen den Nationalsozialismus und den Holocaust dar. Dabei sind sie nicht die einzigen, denn in den über 1 100 Ghettos im deutsch besetzten Osteuropa kam es zu zahlreichen Erhebungen gegen die Okkupanten (vgl. www.yadvashem.org/ de/holocaust/about/combat-resistance.html, www.yadvashem.org/de/holocaust/ about/combat-resistance/warsaw-ghetto.html, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Aufstand_von_Treblinka, www.spiegel.de/einestages/kz-aufstand-sobibor- ausbruch-aus-dem-konzentrationslager-a-951287.html). Die Massenmorde der Deutschen im besetzten Osteuropa, insbesondere die sys- tematische Erschießung von schätzungsweise 55 000 bis 70 000 Jüdinnen und Ju- den in Ponary bei Wilna, die seit Ende 1941 in Betrieb genommenen deutschen Vernichtungslager und die ersten Aktionen zur gewaltsamen Auflösung bestehen- der Ghettos führten zu einer Konsolidierung des jüdischen Widerstandes.

    The National Front, and the search for a ‘nationalist’ economic policy John E. Richardson (forthcoming 2017) To be included in Copsey, N. & Worley, M. (eds) 'Tomorrow Belongs to Us': The British Far- Right Since 1967 Summarizing the economic policies of the National Front (NF) is a little problematic. Compared to their copious discussion of race and nation, of immigration, culture, history and even the environment, British fascists since WWII have had little to say, in detail, on their political-economic ideology. In one of the first content analytic studies of the NF’s mouthpiece Spearhead, for example, Harris (1973) identified five themes which dominated the magazine’s all pervasive conspiracy thinking: authoritarianism, ethnocentrism, racism, biological naturalism and anti-intellectualism. The economy was barely discussed, other than in the context of imagined generosity of the welfare state. The topic is so under-developed that even Rees’ (1979) encyclopaedic bibliography on British fascism, covering over 800 publications on and by fascists (between 1923-1977) doesn’t include a section on political economy. Frequently, the closest fascists get to outlining their political-economic ideology is to identify ‘the problem’: the forces of ‘cosmopolitan internationalism’ (that is: the Jews) importing migrants, whose cheap labour threatens white livelihoods, and whose physical presence threatens the racial purity of the nation. ‘The solution’, on the other hand, is far less frequently spelled out. In essence, fascist parties, like the NF, are comparatively clear about what political economies they oppose – international capitalism and international communism – but are far less clear or consistent about the political economy they support.

The violence provoked by Sir Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists (BUF) was one of the stimulating factors behind the enactment of the Public Order Act 1936.
