LSFT 2405 Dominican Rite Practicum Prepared by the Instructor 2020 Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology Fall 2020 LSFT 2405 First Meeting: Saturday, 9/5, SAP Library, 7:30 pm Dominican Rite Practicum Instructor: Fr. Augustine Thompson O.P. Office Hours: TBA at St. Albert’s Priory Course Description This course is a 1.5 unit graded liturgical practicum open to Dominican friar students, normally after residency year, best in the year of deaconal or priestly ordination. The goal is to acquire the ability to celebrate Low Mass and Missa Cantata according to the traditional Dominican Rite in Latin. The outcome will be a correct and fluid "dry Mass" celebration of the Dominican Rite Low Mass and of the Missa Cantata. These two exercises will in equal parts provide the two graded "exams" of the course. The format will be a practicum in which students perform the rite under the direction of the instructor. Admission to the Class Dominican friars who would like to be admitted to the class need to arrange an interview with the instructor. At the interview they will be asked to recite from memory the texts found on the next page. This memorization is not-negotiable and will serve to prove that the student is ready to undertake the heavy memorization element of the class. As this class is only open to Western Dominican Province student brothers it will be held at St. Albert’s with social distancing. Required Books and Materials William R. UNDERSTANDING WHEN TO KNEEL, SIT AND STAND AT A TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS __________________________ A Short Essay on Mass Postures __________________________ by Richard Friend I. Introduction A Catholic assisting at a Traditional Latin Mass for the first time will most likely experience bewilderment and confusion as to when to kneel, sit and stand, for the postures that people observe at Traditional Latin Masses are so different from what he is accustomed to. To understand what people should really be doing at Mass is not always determinable from what people remember or from what people are presently doing. What is needed is an understanding of the nature of the liturgy itself, and then to act accordingly. When I began assisting at Traditional Latin Masses for the first time as an adult, I remember being utterly confused with Mass postures. People followed one order of postures for Low Mass, and a different one for Sung Mass. I recall my oldest son, then a small boy, being thoroughly amused with the frequent changes in people’s postures during Sung Mass, when we would go in rather short order from standing for the entrance procession, kneeling for the preparatory prayers, standing for the Gloria, sitting when the priest sat, rising again when he rose, sitting for the epistle, gradual, alleluia, standing for the Gospel, sitting for the epistle in English, rising for the Gospel in English, sitting for the sermon, rising for the Credo, genuflecting together with the priest, sitting when the priest sat while the choir sang the Credo, kneeling when the choir reached Et incarnatus est etc. -

Visit to the Vatican In the last newsletter we mentioned the honour that the cathedral choir had received in being the first Anglican cathedral choir to be invited to sing at the Papal Mass on the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul in St Peter’s Square, as well, as being invited to sing in a concert in the Sistine Chapel before the Pope and the ambassadors to the Holy See with the Sistine Chapel Choir. We are grateful to Ioan O’Reilly, one of the choristers, for writing his account of this momentous visit, which follows below. The service can be seen on YouTube, accessed via the Cathedral website. Rome Trip – 2018 This has been an amazing year for the choir; with performances attended by members of the Royal family and a home Three Choirs Festival! Yet by far the most exciting and exotic part of the year was the choir’s trip to Rome... The choir set out on its travels on Tuesday, 26th June, and in no time at all the fun of the trip had started when the organ scholar forgot his lunch (and upon realising that it was still in his fridge quickly sprinted off). -

I decided I needed more shiny things, but pretty shiny things are extremely expensive. I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and learn to make more shiny things myself, while saving some money. I chose to make a circlet for myself because it gave me the opportunity to make something particularly visible and gaudy. I used sterling silver, 14k gold, and fine silver, because only thralls wear brass, and chose sapphire and amber cabochons to mount on it, because my arms are Or and Azure. I chose to use seven gems, for the simple reason that seven is not six – I do not want this mistaken for a Baronial coronet. Historical Basis: Some of the earliest forms of headgear worn to denote royalty or nobility are the diadems worn by the ancient Greeksi. These are still preserved in museums, and illustrated on many coins of the era. For example, this coin, of Antiochus III of the Selucid Empire (ca. 223 BC – 187 BC), shows him wearing a diadem, and bears the inscription in Greek ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ, of King Antiochusii: While these diadems started as simple ribbons or wreaths, worn upon the head for ceremonial or religious reasonsiii, by the 4th century, it was fairly common for rulers in the Greek world to wear a golden wreath on their head as a symbol of nobility or even divinity – because many depictions of the Greek pantheon showed the gods wearing wreaths: Heracles with wreath of white poplar leavesiv: There is also the story of Apollo and the nymph Daphne, from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, in which she is pursued by Apollo and turns herself into a laurel tree. -

This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology of Murdoch University 2010 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. …………………… Peter Elliott Abstract In 1822 a young Church of Scotland minister named Edward Irving accepted a post in London and quickly attracted wide upper-class support. He numbered amongst his friends and admirers the political historian Thomas Carlyle and the Romantic poet-philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge. During the next decade, Irving developed views and practices that could be described as millenarian and proto- pentecostal; his interest in prophecy grew and his Christology became unorthodox. He was ejected from his church and hundreds followed him to begin a new group. Within a short period of time, he was relegated to a subordinate position within this group, which later became the Catholic Apostolic Church. He died in 1834 at the age of 42. This paper examines Irving’s underlying Romanticism and the influences on him, including his complex relationships with Carlyle and Coleridge, and then demonstrates how his Romanticism informed all of his key theological positions, often in tension with the more established Rationalism of the time. In ejecting Irving from his pastorate, the Church of Scotland officials were rejecting his idealistic and Romantic view of Christianity. It was this same idealism, with reference to the charismata, that alienated Irving from a senior role in the nascent Catholic Apostolic Church. -
