BIJLAGEN.............................................................................56 3 I. INLEIDING In deze studie onderzoeken we de aspecten van Nederlandstalige covers van anderstalige nummers. Hoe bewerken artiesten oorspronkelijke nummers? Hoe geven ze er hun eigenheid aan mee? Wat werkt er, wat werkt er minder goed? Wat doen ze met de tekst? Hoe verkrijgen ze toestemming om die nummers uit te geven? Wat hebben ze er zelf over te vertellen? Aan de hand van dit onderzoek zullen we trachten al deze dingen te weten te komen en op een zo objectief mogelijke manier te beoordelen. De grens objectief/subjectief is vaak erg dun binnen een artistieke context en hoewel we het hier zo veel mogelijk zullen proberen vermijden, zal er hoogst waarschijnlijk toch ergens een mening doorslippen in de analyses. We beginnen deze studie met een afbakening van enkele begrippen en van het onderzoeksgebied. Daarna leggen we kort de gebruikte onderzoeksmethodiek uit. Vervolgens komt het hoofddeel van de scriptie, een uitgebreide analyse van 5 Nederlandstalige covers en een kortere analyse van 5 andere covers aan de hand van de conclusies getrokken uit de eerste vijf analyses. Daaruit formuleren we dan uiteindelijk de eindconclusies. Bij wijze van uitsmijter bekijken we tot slot nog, niet onbelangrijk, het legale aspect van Nederlandstalige bewerkingen. De studie heeft tot uiteindelijk doel aan te tonen wat de meest courante manieren zijn om anderstalige nummers te coveren in het Nederlands, zonder daarbij (teveel) te oordelen over goed of slecht. De vijf nummers die uitgebreid geanalyseerd worden zijn echter wel allen terug te vinden in de “Top 10 Beste Nederlandstalige Covers”, samengesteld door de redactie van de Focus Knack op 23 september 2008, wat misschien ergens wel een indicatie is voor de kwaliteit ervan. Al laten we het eindoordeel met plezier aan de lezer zelf. 4 II. AFBAKENING 2.1 Afbakening begrippen: cover / straight cover / bewerking / vertaling Vier begrippen die te pas en te onpas door elkaar gebruikt worden en al naar gelang de context verschillende betekenissen mee krijgen. Vier begrippen die we hier om alle verwarring te vermijden eerst dienen te definiëren. We stelden de definities zelf samen aan de hand van een combinatie van de definities op Van Daele, Wikipedia en Sabam: cover: een nieuwe opgenomen of uitgevoerde versie van een reeds vroeger opgenomen en commercieel uitgegeven nummer. straight cover: een cover met behoud van de oorspronkelijke tekst, vorm, harmonie, melodie en andere belangrijke muzikale parameters vertaling: een cover met nieuwe tekst, maar met behoud van de andere oorspronkelijke belangrijke muzikale parameters bewerking: een cover met verandering van de oorspronkelijke tekst, vorm, harmonie, melodie en andere belangrijke muzikale parameters Het begrip “cover” is dus met andere woorden de meest ruime benaming en behelst eigenlijk de drie belangrijke subcategorieën: straight cover, vertaling en bewerking. We merken op dat de definities niet helemaal sluitend zijn: “belangrijke parameters” zijn voor interpretatie vatbaar (wat zijn die juist?) “verandering” is dat ook (in hoeverre kan een oorspronkelijk nummer “veranderd “worden om nog van een bewerking te spreken?) In paragraaf VIII. Het legale aspect gaan we hier verder op in. Vermits Nederlandstalige adaptaties per definitie vertaald zijn zullen we het verder in deze scriptie dus steeds hebben over vertalingen of bewerkingen, daarbij nogmaals opmerkend dat beide begrippen onder de hoofdnoemer cover vallen. 2.2 Afbakening in tijd en ruimte We beperken ons in deze scriptie tot Belgische Nederlandstalige covers van anderstalige nummers. In de tijd beperken we ons tot de recente popgeschiedenis, vanaf de jaren ’60 tot nu. Eveneens beperken we ons tot artiesten die hun covers zèlf geschreven hebben, omdat we ook op zoek gaan naar de motivatie en beweegredenen van een artiest tijdens het artistiek proces. Artiesten als Louis Neefs bijvoorbeeld, die tal van anderstalige nummers gecoverd heeft, maar ze niet zelf heeft geschreven, worden hier dus niet besproken. 5 III. METHODIEK Voor de uitgebreide vergelijking van vijf voorbeelden hebben we een welbepaalde methode opgesteld. De nummers worden visueel naast mekaar vergeleken: links het origineel, rechts de Nederlandstalige cover. Op die manier overlopen we de volgende (muzikale) parameters: Algemene info: korte beschrijving van de artiest of groep en de plaat of cd waarop het nummer te vinden is Vorm: bespreking van en vergelijking tussen de vorm van beide nummers, daarbij gebruik makend van de algemeen aanvaarde termen binnen popmuziek. Omwille van courante termen als “prechorus” en “bridge” en om verwarring te vermijden, geven we verder alle vorm-begrippen in het Engels: intro, verse (= strofe), prechorus, chorus (= refrein), interlude, bridge, outro Tempo: uitgedrukt in beats per minute (BPM) en soms voorzien van extra info (slow, medium, fast) Metrum/Ritme: het metrum drukken we eenvoudig uit in een maatcijfer, waarna een bespreking volgt van de ritmische gebeurtenissen binnen het nummer Harmonie: harmonische analyse van en vergelijking tussen beide stukken Melodie: bespreking van de belangrijkste hoofd –en nevenmelodieën in het nummer. Arrangement: bespreking van en vergelijking tussen de muzikale bezetting van beide nummers. Tekst: bespreking van en vergelijking tussen beide teksten (originele en vertaalde). We maken hierbij een onderscheid tussen: hertaald (zelfde hoofdboodschap behouden en zelfde verhaal behouden, maar op een zingbare manier naar Nederlands omzetten) vrij vertaald (hoofdboodschap behouden, structuur en chronologie van de ideeën in het verhaal worden vrij geïnterpreteerd) herschreven (al dan niet vertrekkende vanuit de hoofdboodschap, wordt een compleet nieuw verhaal geschreven) De vergelijkende studie is zo opgebouwd dat we elke parameter eerst objectief bespreken en we vervolgens bij belangrijke veranderingen in een parameter kort cursief een verklaring proberen geven waarom die parameter al dan niet gewijzigd is. Na de bespreking van die vijf nummers volgt een voorlopige conclusie. Aan de hand daarvan bekijken we vervolgens nog vijf voorbeelden, deze keer summier besproken, opnieuw aan de hand van een vergelijking van de parameters. Aan de hand van al die gegevens vormen we uiteindelijk de slotconclusie. ! Dit onderzoek wordt natuurlijk pas echt interessant indien de lezer beschikt over het nodige geluidsmateriaal. De meeste nummers die we hier bespreken zijn vrij courant te vinden in platenwinkels of online muziekwinkels, maar bij wijze van extra ondersteuning hebben we van elk nummer telkens een kort fragment, dat u gratis kan beluisteren, online gezet. Die fragmenten kunnen aan de hand van de uitgeschreven en bijgevoegde partituren ook visueel worden mee gevolgd. De hyperlinks en partituren worden in deze scriptie altijd vermeld net onder de schriftelijke analyse van de parameter ARRANGEMENT. Om nodeloos op en neer scrollen te beperken werden de partituren in de scriptie verwerkt en niet als bijlage achteraan toegevoegd. De tijdscode bij elke partituur duidt aan waar in het volledige nummer de uitgeschreven passage begint.
