Increasingly, in the last twenty-five and more years, this boundary is being challenged by environmentalists, animal activists, and mystics. In this regard we were absorbing the commonly-held values of Western culture, in which virtually anything nonhuman on the planet was either a "resource," or property, or potential property. Transforming the Fisheries. At least not in a very long time. Second, many of the "solutions" seem passive aggressive rather than helpful. Further, she creates the "A" category, which creates an idea of white male supremacy in a civilized society, whereas the other in this sense, includes language that relates to different races, non-human animals, and women. It seems that the measures used to assess the carbon footprint almost always show that more intensively produced food is associated with a lower carbon footprint, which leads to a strong suspicion that many factors are not being taken into account.

  • MAC1 Abstracts – Oral Presentations
Oral Presentation Abstracts OP001 Rights, Interests and Moral Standing: a critical examination of dialogue between Regan and Frey. Rebekah Humphreys Cardiff University, Cardiff, United Kingdom This paper aims to assess R. G. Frey’s analysis of Leonard Nelson’s argument (that links interests to rights). Frey argues that claims that animals have rights or interests have not been established. Frey’s contentions that animals have not been shown to have rights nor interests will be discussed in turn, but the main focus will be on Frey’s claim that animals have not been shown to have interests. One way Frey analyses this latter claim is by considering H. J. McCloskey’s denial of the claim and Tom Regan’s criticism of this denial. While Frey’s position on animal interests does not depend on McCloskey’s views, he believes that a consideration of McCloskey’s views will reveal that Nelson’s argument (linking interests to rights) has not been established as sound. My discussion (of Frey’s scrutiny of Nelson’s argument) will centre only on the dialogue between Regan and Frey in respect of McCloskey’s argument. OP002 Can Special Relations Ground the Privileged Moral Status of Humans Over Animals? Robert Jones California State University, Chico, United States Much contemporary philosophical work regarding the moral considerability of nonhuman animals involves the search for some set of characteristics or properties that nonhuman animals possess sufficient for their robust membership in the sphere of things morally considerable. The most common strategy has been to identify some set of properties intrinsic to the animals themselves.

  • A Fight for Life by Maria Sztybel
A Fight for Life by Maria Sztybel ~ excerpts from a Holocaust memoir ~ Compiled by Dr. David Sztybel, Jr. with kind permission from translator, Lola Drach 1. Background In 2006, my article – “Can the Treatment of Nonhuman Animals Be Compared to the Holocaust?” – was published in the peer-reviewed journal, Ethics and the Environment. Later, based on extending that research, I created the Holocaust Comparison Project at davidsztybel.info/16.html. Maria Sztybel – who changed her name to “Maria Rok” after marrying – is my aunt, now long deceased. Maria was the eldest of my father’s siblings, all children of David Sztybel, Senior. Many individuals object to comparing the treatment of nonhuman animals to the Holocaust partly because it is put forward by non-Jews, non- Holocaust-survivors, or people who do not take seriously the egregious death and suffering that occurred during this historical phenomenon. This compilation belies these logically off-base attempts to discredit the comparison. I, David Sztybel, Jr., consider myself to be an indirect Holocaust survivor. After all, first and most obviously, the Nazi death-mechanisms of deportation to killing camps – and associated horrors – very nearly consumed my grandparents’ whole family, but for a rather strange historical contingency that I will detail below. Second, there were also threats from a near-pogrom (or massacre of Jews – recounted below). Third, there was the Nazi military invasion of Poland. The latter killed many of my father’s fellow townspeople. And fourth and fifth, more particularly, my father, Bernard Sztybel, almost died during this period, as narrated in two childhood incidents documented below.

Tey afect individuals we love: family members, friends, and us. We warn our teens and other at-risk groups about the dangers of anorexia and bulimia; we ofer programs aimed at educating peo- ple about what “healthy eating” would look like for them and how they can achieve and maintain a “healthy” weight. Treatment programs for eating disorders focus on individual and small-group therapy. Eating disorders, afer all, are very personal. Tey afect us on a visceral, embodied level—the level at which we ofen feel most vulnerable and most alone. An exclusive focus on eating disorders at this level, however, makes us like the per- son in the famous story who keeps pulling people from a stream without wondering what upstream is making them all fall in. In this essay, I investigate what is happening upstream in the case of orthorexia, a condition in which the subject becomes obsessed with identifying and maintaining the ideal diet, rigidly avoiding foods perceived as unhealthy or harmful.2 In so doing, I join the feminist scholars who have contributed in the past decades to our understanding of the sociocultural and historical contexts in 1 Steven Bratman, with David Knight, Health Food Junkies: Orthorexia Nervosa: Overcoming the Obsession with Healthful Eating (New York: Broadway Books, 2000).

  • A Diet for a Sensitive Soul: Vegetarianism in Eighteenth-Century Britain
A Diet for a Sensitive Soul: Vegetarianism in Eighteenth-Century Britain Anita Guerrini While vegetarianism has a long history in Western culture, it reemerged forcefully in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. Three main motivations for vegetarianism converged in this period: religious, medical, and moral. In addition, a vegetarian diet entered mainstream medical and popular thought in the works of the physician George Cheyne. By the time of Joseph Ritson's Essay on Abstinence from Animal Food in 1802, however, vegetarianism was about to rejoin the irrational fringe, exemplified in the nineteenth century by Sylvester Graham and his followers. 1 In this essay, I shall focus on three vegetarians of the period: the radical hatter Thomas Tryon (1634-1703), George Cheyne (1671-1743), and the man of letters Joseph Ritson (1752-1803). Cheyne's work, especially his Essay of Health and Long Life (1724) and The English Malady (1733), defined the nascent concept of the sensitive character and explicitly connected it to diet and lifestyle. To Cheyne, a vegetarian diet was preeminently a diet for the sensitive soul. Over the century, the sensitive soul negotiated a path from the overtly religious Tryon to the covertly religious Cheyne to the professedly antireligious Ritson. To each, in addition, vegetarianism was part of a wider critique of contemporary society. Tryon was one of a number of religiously motivated vegetarians in the period following the English Civil War. 2 The context of his ideas can be delineated by examining an earlier
