Dear all, welcome to Lingnan University! I firmly believe that the time in Lingnan University will be your unforgettable memory in your life.

At the beginning you may feel a little nervous because of unfamiliar environment. But don’t worry, because it is a home away from home, a family away from family. The senior students, professors and staffs in Lingnan University will help you adapt to the new environment. First, try to make friends with people from different cultural backgrounds. Second, participate in extra-curricular activities actively, which is good for your future development. Last but not the least, enjoy the time in Lingnan. Best wishes to all of you.

P28 Coping with a New Culture

Dear friends Without any doubt, you should first be proud of yourselves that you all are so brave to leave the environment you are familiar with and come to Lingnan University for a brand new experience. It is never easy to adjust oneself to a new environment and new culture. So here are few tips which I hope could be help. Firstly, find something you always love to do. Because it will help you feel steadier in the new environment and make friends by doing it. Secondly, do not hesitate to seek help from the staff, professors and local friends. Since this is what Lingnan is known for: kindness and enthusiasm are everywhere. Cannot wait to meet you in the campus.

JIN Zhengxi BA Year 2 student from Mainland China

Congratulations and welcome to Lingnan! My friends here call me Anika and I hail from Bangladesh. As you have been accepted to Lingnan University, the first thing you have probably heard is Lingnan’s excellence in “Liberal Arts Education”. By now you are probably aware of the definition and the implementation of this method, but I can tell you my experience of being in a liberal arts education environment for one year. I was exposed to a new culture and way of life in a very integrated manner during my hostel life which forced me to come out of my shell. It's very hard to feel lost here as the non-local family is very well knitted. I remember having trouble adjusting with the local culinary culture and having a language barrier. My local friends went out of their way to find food associated with my culture to make me feel comfortable and also helped me eventually get accustomed with local food culture. Now dim sum and egg tarts are my favourite! Apart from education, Lingnan is teaching me life skills as such to overcome adverse environment in future which no other institutions can offer you in such curated manner. Good luck with your endeavours of unleashing new opportunities and thriving in Lingnan University.

P29 Coping with a New Culture

Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance to Lingnan University. You’ll soon find that choosing Lingnan to spend your precious, unique university time is very worthwhile. What waiting for you here is a rich community life and lovely friends. It is hard at first as you will be far from your home, surrounding with people speaking different language, you may feel depress and suffer homesickness, but don’t let negative emotion consume you, be an advocate for yourself and try to get involved. Tension and worry will soon turn into the excitement and expectation of new university life. Hope you enjoy your life in Lingnan!

LU Ruiqi, Rachel BSS Year 2 Student from Mainland China

Congratulations and welcome to the family! We cannot wait to meet you. Once you arrive, there will be plenty of us who are willing to help you and get you adjusted to life here in Hong Kong so don’t worry about it too much. Instead of going into specifics, I would like to generally advice you to find a balance; a balance between striving for your success in life and taking care of yourself. I’m sure you know that you should study hard, join student associations, apply for internships, etc., but please do not pressure yourself too hard because of the things you should do. Don’t forget to also do what you want to do. Take a class that sparks your interest but not because it will be beneficial to you in the future. Go out to the city, hike the mountains, try the food, and basically, explore what Hong Kong has to offer. Make friends with strangers and people who challenge you intellectually and help you grow. Make friends that will last a life time. The four years of your university life should not only make you successful in life, but also to fill you with unforgettable memories and friendships. Work hard, and also play hard! Best wishes for your future endeavors!
