Perhaps surprisingly, this was rather coincidental, as it wasn’t through my studies that I became acquainted with this historical figure, but during a break. I visited my parents on the farm, and my father was reading a book (neither of us can today recall which work it was) in which a passage from Groen’s Unbelief and Revolution was quoted. My father was quite intrigued by the quote, so much so that he thought it necessary to call me and read it to me out loud. I recall that it made a similar impression on me at the time. Today I still can’t recall exactly which section it was from Unbelief and Revolution (alas), but it nevertheless incited me to read the English translation of Groen’s magnum opus for the

The Ideology All rights reserved. © Conclusion INTRODUCTION1 Understanding the movement and the ideology la- belled Calvinism is a rather challenging topic. But none- theless it is an important topic to tackle. As important as any part of such an endeavour is deciding on a “plan of attack” in getting into the topic. The movement covered by this label “Calvinism” has spread out its tentacles all over the place and in many different, sometimes in conflicting directions. The logical starting place is with the person whose name has been attached to the label, although I’m quite sure he would be most uncomfortable with most of the content bearing his name.2 After exploring the history of John Calvin, we will take a look at a few of the more influential interpreters of Calvin over the subsequent centuries into the present day. This will open the door to attempt to explain the ideology of Calvinism with some of the distinctive terms and concepts associated exclusively with it. I.     Editor’s Notes You hold in your hand the April 2016 issue of the Protestant Re- formed Theological Journal. Included in this issue are three articles and a number of book reviews, some of them rather extensive. We are confident that you will find the contents of this issue worth the time you spend in reading—well worth the time. Few doctrines of the faith are more precious to the Reformed be- liever than the doctrine of God’s everlasting covenant of grace. Few books of the Bible are dearer to the saints than the book of Psalms. Prof. Dykstra puts those two together in the first of two articles on “God’s Covenant of Grace in the Psalms.” You will find his article both instructive and edifying. The Reverend Joshua Engelsma, pastor of the Protestant Reformed Church in Doon, Iowa contributes a very worthwhile article on Jo- hannes Bogerman. Bogerman was the man chosen to be president of the great Synod of Dordt, 1618-’19. The article not only traces the life and public ministry of Bogerman, but demonstrates clearly the direct influence that he had on the formulation of the articles in the First Head of doctrine in the Canons of Dordt. This is an especially appropriate article as the Reformed churches around the world prepare to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Synod of Dordt in 2018-’19. The Protestant Reformed Seminary is planning to hold a conference to commemorate this very significant anniversary. We will keep our readers informed of the specifics of the conference as they are arranged.

    Prairie Premillennialism: Dutch Calvinist Chiliasm in Iowa 1847-1900, or the Long Shadow of Hendrik Pieter Scholte Earl Wm. Kennedy Local history as an academic discipline has gained considerable respectability lately, as has the study of American ethnic groups. I am writing a book which compares the Reformed Church in America (RCA) and the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRC) in the Midwest in the last decades of the nineteenth century and first decades of the twentieth century, with special reference to the churches of Orange City (and the surrounding area of Sioux County and Northwestern Iowa), against their background in the Netherlands and the larger church situation in the United States. My study will, I hope, contribute to knowledge of the life and thought of immigrant ethnic churches in our country about a century ago by examining the Orange City-area microcosm of the mini-macrocosm of the Dutch Reformed immigration to the American Midwest. Little has been published comparing the RCA and the CRC. One of my aims is to see how, when, and to what extent these denominations became "Americanized. " I also see this work as a contribution to mutual understanding between the RCA and the CRC. The present article is largely the forerunner of a proposed chapter on premillennialism, which will show that the midwestern, immigrant RCA, especially in Iowa, was receptive to premillenarian teaching, whereas the CRC was closed to it. This divergence reflects the fact that the two groups were formatively influenced by different branches of the 1834 pietist, Calvinist Afscheiding (Secession) in the Netherlands.

Behalve deze veranderingen is in dit nieuwe- boekje ‘voor een 25-ta1 geslachten de stamreeks hooger opgevoerd vermeld, terwijl verder bij verschillende geslachten meer of minder be- langrijke verbeteringen werden aangebracht. Onder den naam van elk geslacht is thans vermeld in welken jaargang van het Ned. Adelsboek voor het laatst de stamreeks is opgenomen. Jooste and the doctrine behind her historic practice of essentially singing only God’s inspired songs. The Johannes C. Potgieter1 catalyst for this investigation is the 2012 RCSA Synod decision to revise Article 69 of the church Affiliations: order – an order based on the one formulated at the 1618–1619 Synod of Dordrecht – to allow for 1 The Unit for Reformational the singing of free hymns. Such a decision marked a significant break with the early Reformed Theology and the Development of the South and confessional tradition of singing only God’s inspired songs, as well as a driving reason for the African Society, Faculty of formation of the RCSA in 1859. This article challenges the 2012 revision of the Dort-modelled Theology, North-West Article 69 on historical and theological grounds. In addition to failing to reckon adequately with University, Potchefstroom, her pre-formation history, the RCSA did not give appropriate attention to her rich legacy of South Africa singing predominantly Psalms only.
