Referent Relationship Thumb length Inch (smallest) in. Thickness of a hockey puck standard floor tile Foot ft. 1 ft. = 12 in. in classroom Arm span from tip of nose, yard Yard yd. 1yd. = 3 ft. = 36 in. stick, length of a guitar Distance walked 1 mi. = 1760 yd in 20 minutes, 1 mi. = 5280 ft. Mile mi. lights to railway (3 x 1760) crossing 1 mi. = ______ in. 2 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 To Convert measurements from one unit to another we can use 2 methods: 1. Multiply or divide by the appropriate conversion factor. 2. Use Unit Analysis. Method 1: Multiply/Divide by Conversion Factor Smallest Unit Inch Foot Divide Yard Multiply Mile Largest Unit Therefore, To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, we multiply. To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, we divide. 3 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 Examples: 1. Convert A. 3 feet to inches B. 8 yards to feet 3 ft. x 12 in. 8 yd. x 3 ft. = 36 in. = 24 ft. C. 48 inches to feet D. 87 ft. to yd. 48 in. ÷ 12 in. 87 ft. ÷ 3 ft = 4 ft. = 29 yd. E. 288 in. to yd. 288 in. ÷ 36 in.= 8 yd. 2. Convert 61 in. to: A) feet and inches B) yards, feet, and inches 61 in. ÷ 12 in. = 5.083 ft. 61 in. ÷ 36 in. 1.694 yd. 0.083 ft. x 12 in. = 1 in. 0.964 yd x 3 ft. = 2.083 ft. 0.083 x 12 in. = 1 in. Answer: 5 ft. 1 in. Answer: 1 yd. 2 ft. 1 in. 4 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 3. Convert: A. 2 mi. to feet 2 mi. x 5280 ft = 10560 ft. B. 574 in. to yards, feet, and inches 574 in ÷ 36 in. = 15.94 yd. 0.94 yd. x 3 ft. = 2.83 ft. 0.83ft. x 12 in. = 10 in. Answer: 15 yd. 2 ft. 10 in. C. 7390 ft. to miles, yards, and feet 7390 ft. ÷ 5280 ft. = 1.399621 mi. 0.399621 mi. x 1760 yd. = 703.3 yd. 0.3 yd. x 3 ft. = 1 ft. Answer: 1 mi. 703 yd. 1 ft. 5 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 Method 2: Unit Analysis Video on Unit Analysis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKCZn5MLKvk 1. Convert the following measurements using unit analysis. A) 51 feet to inches We can write the relationship between feet and inches as a fraction in 2 ways: These are called conversion factors. and B) 29 920 yards to miles 6 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 2. Convert the following measurements. NO DECIMALS ALLOWED A) 7 feet 9 inches to inches B) 428 feet to yards and feet C) 6890 feet to miles, yards and feet D) 35 feet 7 in to yards, feet and inches 7 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 How to use a Measuring Tape (Video on tape measure...stop video and explain the 16ths etc on smart board with pens) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ3Ec1p93PA&feature=player_detailpage Ruler Game http://www.globalclassroom.org/rulergame200/index.html http://www.rickyspears.com/rulergame/ 8 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 Fill in each measurement in inches and fractions of an inch. If you can reduce your fraction into ⅛, ¼, or ½, do so! 9 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 Ex) Alice is putting a border around the walls of a rectangular rec room with dimensions 14 ft. 8 in. by 10 ft. 3 in. half way up the wall. The room has one door and its width is 2 ft. 6 in. A) What is the total length of border needed? B) If the border is sold in 96 in. strips, and sells for $4.89 per strip, determine the total cost of the border needed. 10 Seciton1.1_Imperial_Measurements_of_Length.notebook October 18, 2013 Ex) The school has 20 yds fabric that will be cut into 7 inch strips to make banners for a sports meet. A) How many banners can be made? 20 yd. 7 in. 11.
