Legende sind Regisseure wie Bertolt Brecht, Helene Weigel, Manfred Wekwerth, Benno Besson, Ruth Berghaus, Fritz Bennewitz, Frank Castorf, Adolf Dresen, Hans-Anselm Perten, Armin Petras, Christoph Schroth, Frank Beyer, Lothar Kolditz, Wolfgang Langhoff, Wolfgang Heinz, Friedo Solter, Konrad Wolf, 1 Heiner Carow, Egon Günther, Kurt Maetzig, Lothar Warneke … Der Ruhm, „DDR-Schauspieler“ gewesen zu sein, gehört solchen Schauspielerlegenden wie: Abesser, Doris Frohriep, Jürgen Hindemith, Harry Antoni, Carmen-Maja Gäbler, Dorit Hinze, Petra Bause, Peter Garbe, Albert Hoffmann, Jutta Beyer, Regina Geschonnek, Erwin Hoppe, Rolf Bienert Gerhard Giehse, Therese Hübchen, Henry Blume, Renate Glatzeder, Winfried Jupé, Walter Bodenstein, Christel Glöß, Ruth Kahler, Ernst Böhme, Marita Göring, Helga Kaiser, Wolf Borgelt, Peter Grabbert, Günter Kalisch, Peter Borges, Manfred Grashof, Christian Kamp, Marion van den Böwe, Kurt Gregorek, Karin Karge, Manfred Bürger, Annekathrin Gröllmann, Jenny Karusseit, Ursula Busch, Ernst Grosse, Herwart Kehler, Sonja Christian, Norbert Groth, Sylvester Keller, Inge Danegger, Mathilde Grube-Deister, Elsa Klein, Erik S. • Music in Concentration Camps 1933 Music In
Music in Concentration Camps 19331933––––19451945 GUIDO FACKLER Translated from the German by Peter Logan (Würzburg) It would be wrong to reduce the “Music of the Shoah” (Holocaust/ churbn ) to the Yiddish songs from the ghetto camps of Eastern Europe or to the multiple activities in the realm of classical or Jewish music found in the ghetto camp at Theresienstadt (Terezín), which of course enjoyed a special status as a model camp. It would be equally wrong to restrict our view of music in concentration camps to the “Moorsoldatenlied” (“The Peat Bog Soldiers”), the “Buchenwald Song,” the “Dachau Song,” or the so-called “Girls’ Orchestra in Auschwitz,” described by Fania Fénelon – also the subject of the Hollywood film entitled “Playing for Time”. 1 Instead of this, I wish to address the topic of musical activities in general in the concentration camps. 2 Thus this chapter is about those camps that the Nazi regime started to erect just a few weeks after Hitler’s assumption of power; these camps formed the seed from which the entire system of Nazi camps grew, and which eventually consisted of over 10,000 camps of various kinds. 3 In fact music was an integral part of camp life in almost all the Nazi-run camps. The questions covered by my research include: how was it possible to play music in these camps? What musical forms developed there? What, under these circumstances was the function, the effect and the significance of music for both the suffering inmates and the guards who inflicted the suffering? And how was the extent of musical activities affected by the development of the concentration camp system? My research is based on extensive archive work, the study of memoirs and literature, and interviews with witnesses.

  • Bertolt Brecht's Furcht Und Elend Des Dritten Reiches
BERTOLT BRECHT’S BRECHT’S BERTOLT Brecht’s Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches (Fear and Misery of the Third Reich) gives a compelling documentary picture of life in Nazi Germany. Close readings of individual scenes are accompanied by a detailed analysis of their role within the play’s overall structure. Contrary to the assumption that it is a work of Aristotelian realism, Brecht is shown to employ covert alienation devices that are an integral part of his literary campaign against Third Reich Germany. This first study in English on the subject of Brecht and fascism offers a corrective to the over-concentration on the play’s artistic aspects. It FURCHT UND ELEND DES DRITTEN REICHES considers Brecht’s relationship to the Popular Front’s campaign against the National Socialist regime. Attention is paid to the play’s genesis, and, A German Exile Drama in the Struggle against Fascism in the case of The Private Life of the Master Race, to the partial shift from the Third Reich of 1933-38 to the war period predicted in the original Furcht und Elend cycle. The play’s central theme of resistance, its propaganda value, and its political and artistic reception are addressed within their historical and ideological framework. The result is a challenging assessment of the play’s strengths and limitations as a response to German totalitarianism. JOHN J. • Between Pathos and Its Atrophy
Reinhart Meyer-Kalkus Between Pathos and its Atrophy The Art of Elocution in Germany After 1945 1. The Topos of the Fading of Pathos After 1945 In ancient rhetoric, “pathos” was regarded as the vehement emotion that ora- tors or actors could evoke in listeners and viewers. With this meaning, the term entered into modern rhetorics and poetologies including and up to Les- sing and Goethe. Not until the 1920s did it experience a fundamental change, in that its semantics were narrowed to the pejorative aspects, to false pathos. Today, if we speak in German of “pathos” or “pathetic,” we generally mean an exaggeration of expression, stilted sublimity, embarrassing emphasis, or even kitsch.1 Apparently, this semantic shift corresponds to deep changes in social be- havior and taste since the end of World War I. “Not only the silent film, but also the theater and today’s style of living avoid what is specifically pathetic wherever they can,” wrote the language psychologist Karl Bühler in 1934 in his Ausdruckstheorie (theory of expression). One avoided everything “that is brought forth as expressive as an end in itself and is thus separated from per- 1 Cf. Avoids it and prefers to reveal how one feels between the lines.”2 Thus speaks a member of the generation of the twenties’ “Neue Sachlich- keit” (New Objectivity) who prizes the art of indirect intimation, irony, and refined gestural and sign language.3 Of course, Bühler didn’t think that poli- ticians’ speeches would have to eschew all pathos in the future.

Their successor governments have systematically sought to demonise or even punish any attempt to recognise the social and economic achievements of east European- style socialism, alongside its constantly rehearsed failures and injustices. The more their citizens balk at such a one-sided account of their own lived experiences, the more any honest or remotely sympathetic discussion of the experience of post-war European communism is met with official denunciation and legal bans, from Hungary to Ukraine.

Kirsten Kearney Submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy School of Languages, Cultures and Religions • German University of Stirling January 2007 CH •X ANG DF E P w Click to buy NOW! w m o w c .d k. ocu•trac ii Abstract This thesis focuses on the importance of the ballad in constructing national identity in Germany during the 20th century from 1918•1978. It presents a comparative approach using Scotland as a comparator, based on three significant time periods throughout the century: the Weimar Republic, the Nazi era and the German folk revival. In each of these eras the issue of national awareness was most in evidence and national identity was being created or was a particular object of tension. The modern Scottish literary renaissance and the Scottish folk revival will be used for comparative purposes. The comparative approach will also aid a deeper understanding of the concept of national identity itself. The hypothesis is that the ballad has contributed to the development of national identity in specific and differing ways in the two countries. Selected artists; poets, singers and Liedermacher have been chosen as representatives for each particular stage. The ballad in the 20th century has previously received little critical attention, thus this period has been chosen as the time frame of the thesis in an attempt to redress this balance and create new knowledge.
