It’s from a glorious and delightful 2013 ! The first year since 2009 that the region’s harvests weren’t plagued with damaging weather. This miraculous vintage has roots in over 300 years as a native varietal of Tokaji and as consumed by royalty, emperors, popes and czars. In fact, Tokaji was the very first classification in the world in the 1700s and became known for producing “the wine of Kings and the King of wines.”

Co-Founder and Director of Royal Tokaji, Ben Howkins, spoke with GrapeRadio in April describing their Dry Furmint as “ with attitude.” The considered calling this unusual vintage “a dry wine from a weird grape made by a great sweet wine producer,” but settled on The Oddity. “To be different is to be beautiful.”

The Story to Know

The Royal Tokaji Wine Company, founded in Hungary in 1990, has become one of the most defining wineries in Tokaj. From the outset, Royal Tokaji decided to concentrate on producing single-vineyard wines, made from the first growth vineyards of Mézes Mály, Nyulászó, Szt. Tamás and Betsek. Acknowledged as one of the region's top winemakers, combining traditional techniques with modern technology to create the award-winning Royal Tokaji range of wines. Royal Tokaji is the acknowledged leader of the renaissance of this legendary , which, in the words of the wine author and company co-founder Hugh Johnson, is "a wine that would make angels sing out loud in praise".

Royal Tokaji was inspired and founded by Hugh Johnson, the noted author and wine historian, whose goal was to revive and bring back to international acclaim the wines of one of history’s most renowned wine regions.
