Wines for an Urban Autumn wines for an urban autumn When I caught myself longing for the warmth of the sun, at the same time as giddying about the chance to wear a scarf, the reality of fall sets in. As the seasonal ingredients on Chef Andrew Zimmerman’s menu make the transition from sweet corns to mushrooms, the wine list undergoes a similar evolution in style. Aside from our usual efforts made to highlight wines that are produced using organic, biodynamic and sustainable agricultural practices, the current wines-by-the-glass program replicates our desire to grab on to the best parts of both seasons. As usual, this collection of wines reflects our commitment to quality, value, and the promotion of lesser-known grape varietals and regions with an emphasis on small production wineries and the classics. My friends were the children of aid workers, embassy staff, and the occasional politicians. As adults, they customarily followed the footsteps of their parents. But me? Not so much. I chose wine. Family and tradition are major influences in French wine making. Most vintners are born into families that have been making wine—including great wine—in the same places and with the same methods for generations. But there are renegades among them, who have a yen for experimentation. What would happen if they redirect their passion away from the paths that have set before them? I’m drawn to such wines. They remind me of my family’s itch for regular infusions of new experiences. Laurent Combier of Crozes-Hermitage, Peter Fischer of Provence, and Jean-Michel Gerin of Côte-Rôtie joined forces to create wines in the notable Spanish wine region of Priorat. Their wines are tradition-bound while being innovative and provocative. They combined the flamboyant and fruit-forward excitement of modern winemaking with the complexity and power of old vines. No. 1/3 is an intense red with notes of fig, prune and dark cherry. The palate is full-bodied with a wonderfully spicy edge. Hints of vanilla from oak barrels make a welcome appearance on a lengthy finish! features & notables | 2 features & notables | the wine geeks’ soap box cliffsnotes continued 14 Val de Loire Grolleau Clau de Nell, Anne Claude Leflaive, Loire, Frace 116 The late Anne-Claude Leflaive ran Domaine Leflaive, a landmark producer in the prized Burgundy commune of Puligny-Montrachet. She pioneered the now widespread practice of biodynamic viticulture, ran a wine school, and never worried about getting her hands dirty. In 2008, Anne-Claude acquired the Clau de Nell estate in the Loire Valley as a project to promote biodynamic practices across France. This bottling of Grolleau is a beautiful offering of bright aromas of black raspberry and blackberry followed by fresh violets, minerals and black tea leaf which unwind slowly and exquisitely on the palate. Sadly, 2014 was the last vintage made by Anne-Claude; she passed away in 2015. 14 Résonance Pinot Noir Résonance Vineyard, Yamhill-Carlton District, Willamette Valley 137 Résonance balances tradition and technology in the vinification process. This project focuses on the purest terroir expression of Oregon’s Yamhill-Carlton District AVA. Résonance Vineyard is of the oldest dry-farmed vineyards in the Willamette Valley. This is the first offering of the iconic Burgundy house Louis Jadot outside of Burgundy. Jacques Lardière, the world-renowned winemaker of Louis Jadot, handcrafted the bottles at Résonance. Notably pale, this Pinot Noir is delicately perfumed, relatively light and herbal, subtle and savory.     TheDelamotte History is a Champagne house more than 250 years old (it is the sixth oldest Champagne house) founded in Reims in 1760 by François Delamotte, a vineyard owner. He and other Champagne producers were the creators of a tradition based on quality. Their modus operandi, far from being viewed as quaint, earned them a place in the Encyclopedia of Physiocrates. Their practices have been used as a model and a paradigm by other businesses due to their progressive outlook and insistence on quality. They were truly modern-minded people. Their masterpiece – the wines – continue to be recreated anew each year and the house of Delamotte is a prime example of the traditions of quality they embody. Alexandre Delamotte brought the cellars, caves and offices of the House of Delamotte to one beautiful mansion at the end of the 18th century. In 1828, his brother, Nicolas Louis Delamotte, also known as the Chevalier Delamotte Barrachin, a former Chevalier de Malte and President of the Chamber of Commerce of Reims, assumed management of the House of Delamotte. In this tenure with the Chamber of Commerce, Nicolas was well known for hosting spectacular events, namely the coronation of France’s last King, Charles X. Serge Chapuis The House was sold to the Lanson family in the 1830’s, who later started producing a Lanson label. It was eventually acquired by Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, née Lanson, in the period between the two World Wars. In 1927, Marie-Louise made the decision to transfer the activities of the house of Delamottte to Mesnil-sur-Oger.

    2018 Losonci Pinot Gris Matra, Hungary Bálint Losonci entered the wine business as a writer for the wine magazine Borbarát under László Alkonyi. He was exposed to a whole world of Hungarian wines in the late 1990s that was just waking up after Communism. He then apprenticed under Gábor Karner (whom he found via Borbarát), and joined a few other liked minded small producers who believed in the future potential of the Mátra appellation. Hungary’s Mátra appellation is quietly the second largest in the country (7500+ hectares), but has been dominated by just a few larger industrial players – perhaps a bit of a Soviet cooperative era hangover. The typical vine density is designed for large tractors and there’s a disturbing amount of Müller-Thurgau and Chasselas geared more for table grape yields than wine. He and others greatly increased vine density, planted native grapes, moved to organic farming, and drastically reduced yields. In the cellar, the main tenants are native fermentation and no other additions other than SO2. Given the wines typical of the area, all of this was somewhat unheard of on a commercial level. He continues to experiment and push himself, but what remains constant is his unwavering community oriented mindset and desire to put Mátra back on the wine map. His vineyards and wines reflect this drive, ambition and generosity. VINEYARDS Roughly 8 hectares are spread across the villages of Gyöngyöspata, Gyöngyöstarján and Nagyréde (single vineyards include Gereg, Tamás-hegy, Sárosberek, Peres, Virág-domb, Oroszi, and Lógi). The first thing Bálint did was plant in between the existing rows (pre Communist era vine density), retrained the vines to drop yield to maximum 1 kilo per plant, and transitioned to organic farming.

Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety Austrian Wine statistics report 1.2 Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety 2 The data in this section is based on the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, as well as feedback from the wine-producing federal states of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, Steiermark (Styria) and Wien (Vienna). The main source of data for the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine was the Wein-ONLINE system operated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMNT). Data from the remaining federal states was collected by means of a questionnaire (primary data collection). Information relating to the (approved) nurseries was provided by the Burgenland and Lower Austrian Chambers of Agriculture and the Styrian state government (Agricultural Research Centre). According to the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, Austria’s vineyards occupied 45,574 hectares. The planted vineyard area was 45,439 ha, which corresponds to 94 ha less (or a 0.2% decrease) in comparison to the 2009 Survey of Area under Vine. The long-running trend that suggested a shift away from white wine and towards red was quashed by the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine. While the white wine vineyard area increased by 2.3% to 30,502 ha compared to 2009, the red wine area decreased by 4.9% to 14,937 ha. Figure 1 shows the evolution of Austrian viticulture after the Second World War. The largest area under vine was recorded in 1980 at 59,432 ha. From 1980 onwards, the white wine vineyard area has continuously decreased, while the red wine vineyard area has expanded.

    2019 Signature Chenin Blanc Napa Valley Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus The Wine Our Chenin Blanc has a long and storied history on Pritchard Hill®. The original vines were already producing when Donn and Molly purchased the property in the late 1960s. Following a replanting in 2004, we reintroduced our Chenin Blanc as a “Signature” designation – with a twist. While our Signature Cabernet bear Donn Chappellet’s name, Molly Chappellet’s signature graces our Chenin Blanc label. To add depth and complexity, the 2019 Chenin Blanc was fermented in a combination of neutral French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Growing Season & Harvest The 2019 growing season began with cool, rainy weather throughout winter and spring, which delayed budbreak slightly and resulted in a robust crop and vigorous canopies. To create the desired vine balance, we thinned leaves and clusters extensively, doing as many as three fruit-dropping passes depending on the needs of each vine. The weather remained temperate throughout summer, followed by perfectly timed warm weather in October. As a result, early ripening grapes like Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay yielded wines with dazzling aromatics, lovely energy and pure, fresh flavors, while our later-ripening varieties provided gorgeous color and concentration, with supple tannins and rich, soaring flavors.
