23Rd HANSE SAIL 23 rd HANSE SAIL: A POWERFUL MAGNET AND IMPULSE GENERATOR Rostock, Tuesday 6 August 2013 The 23 rd Hanse Sail will kick off from the 8 th to 11 th of August 2013. Already, 216 ships from 13 nations have confirmed their participation. Together, they represent a fascinating range of historical and technical diversity. Rostock-based companies such as AIDA Cruises, tow-boat companies Fairplay and Bugsier, Sartori & Berger, Rostock Hanseatic Brewery and Rostock Public Services are lined up to sponsor and co-finance the starting run of the ships. Rostock city harbour and Warnemünde combined, offer a four kilometer-long strip of entertainment. This fantastic strip will contain seven stages, up to 60 fun rides and about 500 market and food stands. One million visitors and more than 25,000 joint-sailors are expected to join the 23 rd edition of the Hanse Sail. The kick-off event will be opened by a regatta and cruises in company. The day before the opening of the Hanse Sail will feature the shark cutter regatta, which will sail from the Danish Nysted along the SCANDLINES-route from Gedser to the Warnow delta. In addition to this spectacle, there will be a cog-sail from Wismar. Many of the participating ships will set sail on Tuesday (6 th of August) from Szczecin to Warnemünde. The Polish city at the Oder river was this year's host for the final Tall Ship Races, which were organised for a period of four weeks in the Baltic region. The regatta of traditional sailing ships on Saturday (10 th of August) are another main maritime highlight. Seven event areas with diverse offers On seven areas visitors will be guaranteed a diverse programme on the four days of the event. The German Navy awaits guest at its open base in Hohe Düne where further ships such as the Brazilian Navy ship “Cisne Branco” and the training ship of the Polish Navy “Iskra” will tie up for an “Open Ship” attendance. The principal spot is Warnemünde. From the shores and moles, visitors will have the most spectacular view on the incoming and outgoing traditional sailing ships. Along the passenger pier, seven wind-jammers and the frigates of the German Navy “Karlsruhe” will tie up. On Saturday, four cruise liners will be joining the four-masted “Star Flyer”. The cultural main event at the seaside resort will take place on the stage near the light house and along the market-strip on the promenade pier. The main location for events is the Rostock city harbour where most of the participating traditional sailing ships will tie up. Four hanseatic ships will form the impressive setting for the market event “Life during the Hanse Time” which will be staged on the Silo-peninsular. Close to the peninsular, the parade sailing of the “Shtandart”, a replica of Tzar Peter I’s flag-ship, will end on Saturday at 6 pm. Later that evening, a game will be performed by the Hans Sail Association illustrating the history of Rostock's connections with its partnering country Russia. A further highlight in the inspiring programme will be offered by the northern German public-service broadcasting. On Sunday, “Miss and Mister Hanse Sail 2013” will be elected on the Hanse Sail stage with the help of the LT-Club. On Friday and Saturday night, the partners ANTENNE MV and M.A.U. Club entertain visitors with music on the stage ROSTOCKER (near Kabutzenhof). During the day, the “CITTI Kids and Fun Park” is the right place to be for families and close to this park, the well-established “Rock the Ramp”, will again provide a maximum of entrainment. In addition to the variety of amusements, sport activities are on display in the city harbour near the sailing stadium. One of the sport highlights will be the water ski shows of the water sports club Luzin (Feldberg) sponsored by EURAWASSER. The seventh area for further Hanse Sail events is Rostock's “inland sea” which refers to the “Schwanenteich” (swan lake) near the hall for art. The space around the swan lake will be illuminated during the first artSAIL on Thursday evening. This joint project of KARO and the hall for art features open air galleries, films, live radio, sound installations and a barbecue. Hanse Sail as an unique politico-economic networking event Under the auspices of Chancellor Angela Merkel, the 23 rd edition of the Hanse Sail represents a major political event for the hanseatic city and the northern German federal land. Among the confirmed political guests are the Federal Minister of Transport and Urban Development Dr Peter Ramsauer, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finances of the Federal State of Brandenburg, Dr Helmuth Markor and Erwin Sellering, Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania, as well as the three ministers of his cabinet Till Backhaus, Lorenz Caffier and Harry Glawe. Further political guests include members of the European Parliament, the Federal Parliament and the State Parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania. Expected are more than ten diplomats, consuls and attachés, including the representative of this year's partnering land Russia Vladimir Grinin as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in Germany, Yakov Hadas-Handelsman and Takeshi Nakane as ambassadors extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the state of Israel and Japan as well as Ricardo Alves de Barros, military attaché of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The Kingdom of Denmark, the Republic of Iceland, the Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Austria, the Kingdom of Sweden and the Czech Republic are represented by their honorary consuls for Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania. The guest list of the hanseatic city of Rostock includes more than two dozens of representatives from partnering cities inside and outside Germany, including Bathtub (Georgia), Guldborgsund Commune (Denmark), Hefei and the province of Anhui (China), Karlskrona (Sweden), Kiel, Klaipeda (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia) and Szczecin (Poland). Universities such as the University of Rostock, the oldest university of Northern Europe, and the University of Music and Drama (Hochschule für Musik und Theater, HMT), attract many students from other parts of Germany and abroad. The University of Music and Drama founded in 1994 contributes to a large part to the city’s cultural life with its thrilling calendar of events. It combines tradition and modernity in a perfect way not only in its architecture, but also in the courses offered which range from classical music to pop and world music, from music education to musicology, drama and multimedia. The city of Rostock has existed since 1218 and looks back to nearly 800 years of history determined by commerce, harbour, shipbuilding, shipping, and fishing. The Kunsthalle, the Volkstheater, the Theater am Stadthafen, the Institut Français, the Max-Samuel House, the Waldemarhof, the Familienzentrum Lütten Klein, and the Jugendkulturzentrum Mau are only some examples of the vivid cultural life of the city. Tourists come to Rostock to visit not only the marvellous beaches on the Baltic coast around Rostock, but also the largest Christmas market in Northern Germany and the Hanse Sail Rostock, a sailing festival held annually in August. Only a few people in Rostock still know Plattdüütsch or Low German, a regional dialect of the Western German languages spoken mainly in Northern Germany and the eastern part of the Netherlands, but also in Northern Poland, the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia, and a part of southern Lithuania.1 In the context of this project, we heard this dialect at the concert of the Duo Ossenkopp and the shanty choir Breitling (101126-Duo Ossenkopp_Plattdeutsch).

    13 th August 2017 Hanse Sail Fans are weatherproof One Million Visitors and 200 Ships celebrate maritime Tradition and Future during mixed Weather The Hanse Sail attracted an audience of a million again in 2017. Despite mixed weather, visitors from far and wide were flocking to the quays of Rostock and Warnemünde. All in all, 30.000 guests took the chance to sail with one of the participating ships, of which more than 12.000 were distributed via the tall ship booking centre of the Hanse Sail Association. “I would particularly like to thank everyone who took the invitation to come aboard the ships. By buying the tickets they support the traditional ships, the Hanse Sail and maritime festivals in general,” Roland Methling said, first mayor of the Hanseatic and University City Rostock. Like pearls on a string, the ships from Szczecin, the final harbour of the Tall Ship Races, entered Rostock, with the “Cisne Branco” leading the way; the “White Swan” from Brazil was visited during the four days of the Hanse Sail by approximately 20.000 visitors. “Szczecin with its Baltic Sail is a strong network partner. Our events support each other, so that new ships enter our harbours again and again and eventually become regular guests,” Methling explains. “The 27 th Hanse Sail was a well-attended event, regarding the ships as well as the visitors. This is one of the reasons we know why the concept works – we have a very loyal audience and the good reputation of our event attracts new guests again and again,” as Holger Bellgart, the Director of the Hanse Sail Office summarizes.

    August 8th, 2019 29th edition of Hanse Sail Rostock is open Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern Manuela Schwesig opened the 29th Hanse Sail Rostock with the traditional glass of the ship's bell. During his inaugural visit to Lisbon in 2018, the Federal President told his Portuguese counterpart about the great windjammer ships in Rostock and invited him to visit the Hanse Sail this year. "It is an honor and a pleasure for me to be here", states Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in German in order to welcome the visitors. "The Hanse Sail is the absolute highlight and the biggest maritime folk festival in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This year I was very happy to hand over the patronage to the Federal President", announced Minister President Manuela Schwesig. "What fascinates us all again and again are the great traditional sailers when these beautiful old ships come here to us in Rostock. During the ceremony with the flags of Portugal, Latvia, Mecklenburg-Westen Pommerania, the Hanseatic and University city Rostock as well as the Hanse Sail combat swimmers of the navy jumped from a helicopter into the Warnow River and reported a successful jump to the inspector of the navy Andreas Krause on stage. Mayor Roland Methling is looking forward to the first meeting with the "Amerigo Vespucci" and the "Gloria" as well as to the third visit of the "Cuauhtemoc" in Rostock. Also the regular guests "Greif" and "Stettin", who have been heading for the Hanse Sail in all weathers for 29 years, deserve special attention.

    28th Edition of the Hanse Sail Rostock Is Open The Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Manuela Schwesig and the Mayor of the Hanseatic and University City Roland Methling opened the 28th edition of the Hanse Sail Rostock with the traditional glass of the ship's bell in the best mood. From 9 to 12 August, around 170 traditional sailing ships and museum ships will transform the event area on the Warnow River and Baltic Sea into a maritime Eldorado. "The Hanse Sail Rostock is the biggest folk festival in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and stands for tradition, modernity and cosmopolitanism. It is an honour for me to be the patron of the event again and to be able to ceremoniously open it", announced Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig. Partner country of this year's Hanse Sail is the Kingdom of Sweden, whose ambassador Per Anders Thöresson was also present at the opening on the NDR stage. "I am a passionate sailor myself and what is happening here in Rostock is really amazing. The Hanse Sail is the most beautiful festival I have ever seen", enthused Ambassador Thöresson. The Swedish fleet of traditional wooden ships is an integral part of the Hanse Sail and can be visited at Kabutzenhof in the city harbour. Also a loyal partner of the Hanse Sail is the German Navy, which participates with several ships and an open base in the largest annual traditional sailing meeting of the world, as the inspector of the Navy Andreas Krause announced. Navy combat swimmers had jumped from a helicopter into the Warnow River with the flags of Sweden, Germany, Rostock and the Hanse Sail before the opening and had brought them onto the stage.

The Hanseatic and university city will not simply celebrate a folk festival. The world's largest annual traditional sailing event is often used as a platform to invite partners from politics and business to the Baltic Sea and to show them the potential of the maritime metropolis. "During the Hanse Sail, Rostock presents itself to guests from all over the world as a maritime, cosmopolitan business and tourism location. We are using the maritime festival to consolidate our international network - to our twin cities, cooperation partners and for the first time also to the naval capitals of the world", announces Mayor Roland Methling.
