From Farms to Resorts, Estates and Home to ew Immigrants New Rochelle in the 19 th Century An “arm of the Atlantic”, Long Island Sound stretches along the New York and Connecticut shorelines to the ocean. The western end of the estuary meets the Manhattan’s East River at Hell’s Gate. This waterway not only put New Rochelle on a trade route, it propelled the farming community into a resort destination. Sophisticated entrepreneurs and the advancement of steamboat travel ensured its success, as they banked on the wide open vistas, clean country air and unlimited aquatic activities just a boat ride from the increasingly crowded and sullied streets of Manhattan. The first passenger train of the New Haven Railroad steamed into town on New Year’s Day, 1849, and within a few decades rail service travel was suitable for daily travel. As a result, many of the former vacationers began planting roots in the community - the wealthy building summer estates; the middle class families purchasing homes in developing residential parks. The train also brought new immigrants to town – the New Rochelle station was the first stop on the New Haven line and a quick trip from the ferry dock off Ellis Island. By 1865, 30% of the town's population was foreign-born. Of New Rochelle's 3,968 residents, 800 were Irish and 200 were German. The depot became the catalyst for shops, newspaper offices, banks, tearooms, and other enterprises that evolved into a permanent and thriving “downtown” that was within the Village of New Rochelle (a 950 section that had been established in 1857. -

This report is intended as a tool for municipalities to use as they move forward with their TOD efforts. The report identifies the range of TOD opportunities at station areas within the corridor that could result from improvements to the Danbury Branch. By also providing information regarding FTA guidelines and TOD best practices, this report serves as a reference and a guide for future TOD efforts in the Danbury Branch study corridor. Specifically, this report presents a definition of TOD and the elements of TOD that are relevant to the Danbury Branch. It also presents a summary of FTA Guidance regarding TOD and includes case studies of FTA-funded projects that have been rated with respect to their livability, land use, and economic development components. Additionally, the report examines commuter rail projects both in and out of Connecticut that are considered to have applications that may be relevant to the Danbury Branch. -

Westport According to those at the meeting, which included the First and Second Selectmen and a representative from the Police Department, who run the station, Harry Harris wants CDOT to take control of the stations and parking. This was the first issue brought up by the town representatives – that the State wants to run the stations to provide better quality control, and that the State feels that this is the only solution to improve the supply of parking along the entire line. Furthermore, the feeling was that CDOT would be exempt from local zoning and would therefore be in a position to deck parking lots without local permission. Westport feels that they do a good job with the two town stations, and that they have an excellent relationship with Carl Rosa regarding maintenance and operations and with Harry Harris regarding policy. They feel strongly that if other towns ran their stations and parking like they do CDOT would have far fewer issues to contend with. Westport understands the desire for uniformity among the stations and supports that policy, albeit with concern regarding home rule issues. Westport, ultimately, is satisfied with the status quo, and feels the working relationship is excellent, the division of responsibilities clear, and their ability to have input into the ADA design process excellent. -

Northeast Corridor Capital Investment Plan Fiscal Years 2017-2021
Northeast Corridor Capital Investment Plan Fiscal Years 2017-2021 April 2016 Congress established the Northeast Corridor Commission (the Commission) to develop coordinated strategies for improving the Northeast’s core rail network in recognition of the inherent challenges of planning, financing, and implementing major infrastructure improvements that cross multiple jurisdictions. The expectation is that by coming together to take collective responsibility for the NEC, these disparate stakeholders will achieve a level of success that far exceeds the potential reach of any individual organization. The Commission is governed by a board comprised of one member from each of the NEC states (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland) and the District of Columbia; four members from Amtrak; and five members from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The Commission also includes non-voting representatives from four freight railroads, states with connecting corridors and several commuter operators in the Region. The tower is significant for its association with an important period in the development of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, and for its original embodiment of state of the art architectural design and electrical engineering technology. Project Information: This documentation was initiated in accordance with a 1994 Memorandum of Agreement between the Federal Railroad Administration and the New York State Historic Preservation Office as a mitigation measure prior to the tower's demolition to accommodate additional tracks as part of a railroad improvement project on the Northeast Corridor. -

WATERBURY TRAIN STATION VISUAL INSPECTION REPORT January 2007 Prepared by the Bureau of Public Transportation Connecticut Department of Transportation Waterbury Train Station Visual Inspection Report January 2007 Overview: The Waterbury Train Station is located near the city’s central business district. Adjacent to the facility is the old Union Station, now owned and occupied by the Waterbury Republican newspaper. Its 245-foot bell tower provides a landmark for locating the station. Using local roads to access the facility is not as easy due to a lack of trailblazing. Upon arriving at the station, one may have trouble locating the parking lot entrance, which is located several hundred feet south. A station sign has been placed at the entrance. The drive is partially obscured by a bank building and its poorly situated exit, which is only several feet from the parking lot driveway. The station itself consists of a short high- level platform, a ramp, two shelters and a parking lot. The station area is clean with only an occasional tossed item. However, the area across from the platform consists of abandoned tracks and railroad debris. The shelters are clean with benches. A recycling bin is located next to the shelters. Between the station and Meadow Street are an abandoned parking structure and vacant office building. The old driveway behind the platform is barricaded against use by commuters. A kiosk is situated at the north end of the platform.
