The goal of this examination was to reveal how gender relations are rhetorically created within the Arab cultural context. This study found that two rhetorical strategies mediated gender relations and provided a path for improving gender relations. The strategies were Lamentation and Muruwa. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Thanks to the Great God for making this world so beautiful and harmonious. And by our own nails we built a family that our little country could easily count on as an example for the astonishing quality of our people in Bahrain: My mother who survived the hard tradition of being forced to be a mother when she herself was a child, but who remains faithful to the traditions of fulfilling her role as a mother, even when she became a widow at thirty years old. My sister Layala and her husband Jassem who brightened up our life with their children, and who always lived very close to our family, extending my father's traditions of establishing a family that contributes to the growth of our country; my sister, Najat, who took the responsibility of nurturing the family, keeping it together after I flew to the States in 1984 to gain my Master's degree, while taking care of her students as a teacher and later as a Director first, for Al-Hoora High School, then for Jidhafs High School; my brother Ahmed, the Lieutenant Colonel and Staff Officer at Bahrain Defense Force, who never gave up expanding his knowledge in his field, even when the chance to get promoted is out of question in certain areas ; my brother Mohammad, the iv successful Director of Al-Amin Bank; my sister Jameela, the Professor of Bio- Chemistry at the University of Bahrain; my brother Abdulla, the Medical Doctor at Salmanya Hospital who remained faithful to his country despite the seven years of delay after his graduation with honor from Safarik University in Slovakia; and finally, to Reem, the architect at Bahrain Municipality who thought that life was furnished with flowers, because her dedicated family never let her feel down, and she herself proved that she deserved the distinguished treatment she got by being successful in her work and in her personal life as a mother of three beautiful children that became the new smile in our family life.     Edin Muftić Homer: An Arabic portrait1 Homer is rightfully seen as the first teacher of Hellenism, the poet who educated the Greek, who in turn educated Europe. But, as is well known, Europe doesn’t have a monopoly on Greek heritage. It was also present in the Islamic tradition, where it manifested itself differently. Apart from phi- losophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine and pharmacology, Greek poetry, even if usually not translated, was also widely read among the Arab-Islamic intellectual elite. The author analyses the extent to which Homer’s works circulated, how well known were his poetics, and the influence his verses exerted during the heyday of Classical Arab-Islamic civilization. Keywords: Homer; translation movement; Al-Biruni; arabic poetry; Al-Farabi; Averroes INTRODUCTION The Greek and Arab epic tradition have much in common. Themes of tribal enmity, invasions and plunder, abduction of women, revenge, heroism, chivalry and love feature prom- inently in both traditions. While the Greeks have Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, Odysseus, Jason or Achilles, the Arabs have ʻAntar bin Šaddād (the “Arab Achilles”), Sayf bin ī Yazan, Az-Zīr Sālim and many others. When it comes to the actual performance of poetry, similarities be- Ḏ tween the two traditions are even greater. Homeric aoidos playing his lyre has a direct coun- terpart in Arab rawin playing his rababa. The Arab wandering poet often shares the fate of his Greek colleague (Imruʼ al-Qays, arafa and Al-Aʻšá, and Abū Nuwās and Al-Mutanabbī are the most famous examples). Greek tyrants who were famous for hosting poets like Ibycus, Anacre- Ṭ on, Simonides, Bacchylides or Pindar, while expelling others like Alcaeus, have a royal counter- part in An-Nuʻmān bin al-Mun ir, the ruler of Hira.

The current cultural scene is comprised of a mainstream group and a large number of subcultural enclaves. The coexistence of these groups leads to tensions between the mainstream culture and the various subcultures, in this case, the immigrant ones. Transformation of the ethnic enclaves occurs over generations of interchange with the mainstream environment and results in specialized communities that are a hybrid of the immigrant's culture and the prevailing American one.

In this context marginalisation is not only understood in the sense of socio-economically disadvantaged women of the lower strata but also refers to non-conformist women, whose behaviour is considered to be deviant from the norm, abnormal or even mad by mainstream society. As a result, they feel alienated from society, and choose diverse ways (passive, active, or subversive) of coping with their fate. This contribution will take selected novels and short stories written by Alifa Rifaat (1930–96), Nawal El Saadawi (b. 1931), and Salwa Bakr (b. 1949) as examples in order to demonstrate the shift in emphasis and perspective on the topic. This will be done against the individual biographical background and writing career of the three authors. Although all au- thors are committed to women’s issues and gender equality, not all of them can be described as feminist writer-activists.
