IM he Museum of Modern Art

11Wes t 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Circle 5-8900 Cable: Modernart No. 50 Saturday, May 20, I967 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art will present THE FRENCH SHORT

FILM: 19^7*1967 from May 29 through June I5 (part I) and from July I7 through

August k (part II), except on Wednesda3r6. The program consists of about 80 films,

each with a running time of under sixty minutes. Only about 20 of the films have

been shown in the United States in commercial theaters; many do not as yet have

American distributors. "The program is a testimony to the creative spirit of French

production, a witness to the evolution and variety of theme and style which flourish

in the ," comments Adrienne Mancia of the Film Department.

The French call the short film a banc d*essai — a testing ground, and it is

here that many distinguished names in cinematic history have first appeared: Luis

Bunuel, Jean Vigo, Jean Epstein, Ren^ Clair, Claude Autant-Lara, ,

Jacques Feyder, Alberto Cavalcanti, , Marcel L*Herbier and Jean

Grfimillon, among others.

During the past twenty years, the period with which this program deals, new

names have emerged in the production of the French short film: Francois Truffaut,

Georges Franju, , , , Agnfes Varda, ,

Jean-Luc Godard, Robert Enrico and Claude Lelouch,

Although the vitality and diversification of the short film recently has been

paralleled in other countries, the French short film has the most honored history.

Part I of the program attached. (Wherever possible the English version will

be shown. However, since many of these films are not distributed in the U.S., the

only prints available are in the original French.)
