ABSTRACT THE RECEPTIONOF FRIEDRICH HEBEEL IN GERMANY IN THE ERA OF NATIONAL SOCIALISM The following thesis examines the impact on the interpretation of Hebbel's personality and works of National Socialist ideology and propaganda. It comprises six chapters. The first five of these explore different areas of ideological influence and provide evidence of the nature and extent of this influence. The sixth chapter looks at the reception of Hebbel in the National Socialist theatres and at the growth and development of the Hebbel-Society between 1933 and 1945. The aim of the thesis is primarily to break down the National Socialist view of Hebbel into its constituent parts and to categorise these. An acquaintance with Hebbel's works and beliefs reveals that the National Socialist view of him is largely inaccurate and distortive. The thesis has to explain why the National Socialists developed"a false view of Hebbel. And it has to point as frequently as necessary to the differences between Hebbel as he was in reality and Hebb el as the National Socialists saw him. The thesis does not present National Socialist interpretations as having totally revolutionised Hebbel-reception. In two chapters in particular, the second and the third, it will show how interpretations which were to become characteristic of National Socialist Hebbel-reception were being propagated long before 1933. Nevertheless the National Socialists standardised the picture of Hebbel as a Nordic dramatist who was committed to heroic ideals, anti-Semitic, politically conservative and anti-liberal. The ideal aim of the thesis is to "purify" Hebbel's character, works and beliefs of their association with National Socialist values. At the same time it will be shown how easily and at times almost imperceptibly a writer's views can be altered to make them consistent with those of O. -interpreter. ---------- ACKNOWLEDGEh1ENTS There are many people I should like to thank for making this thesis possible. The assertion is an accurate one: Hebbel was met with the highest degree of approval between 1933 and 1945. Henry Gerlach, in his catalogue of the contents of the Wesselburen Hebbel-Museum, even refers to a Hebbel renaissance 2 under National Socialism. And in the early years of National Socialist rule, critics talked incessantly of a rebirth of interest in the 3 dramatist, as they did in the case of Schiller. The term "renaissance" is perhaps an overstatement. There had been a surge of interest in Hebbel at the turn of the century. But although that interest waned to a degree, although it was occasionally countered by strong criticism (one 4),. thinks for instance of Brecht's remarks concerning Judith it certainly never died. The Weimar Republic theatres indeed gave Hebbel's plays a generous share of attention. What is indisputable is that National Socialists greeted Hebbel with a far more intense enthusiasm than previous generations. There was a quite ecstatic sense of his contemporary relevance. The National Socialists even attempted, as Gerlach suggests5, to popularise Hebbel. Lavish Hebbel-Weeks in Bochum (1939) and Vienna (1942) sought to affirm Hebbel's national impo .rtance before as wide an audience as possible. The promotion of Hebbel under National Socialism, a promotion in which state organisations and state-controlled press played an active role, raises the question: why was Hebbel cultivated? It will be the primary task of this thesis to explain the reasons. The most basic reason of all of course was his value as propaganda. All dramas promoted in the theatre were cultivated not so much on account of their aesthetic worth as because of their suitability as propaganda. And National Socialist Hebbel criticism, because its assessments were shaped by a 11 - - desire to establish affinities between Hebbel and National Socialism, also had a propagandistic function. One must make it clear at the outset that it was not Hebbel's'personality, writings and beliefs as they really were that inspired the National Socialists to embrace him, but their image of these. At first sight this assertion might seem a little unfair. Is it not the case, in the words of a well-worn metaphor, that it takes "two to make a match"? Surely, one might contend, Hebbel's views are. often similar to those of the National Socialists. After all, he supported Austro-German unification, his dramas do contain heroic elements, he did reject Communism. Certainly, at first glance there are parallels, and since National Socialist critics were seeking parallels, they contented themselves with this first glance. But a closer study of Hebbel exposes these parallels as either merely apparent or as purely external, so that interpretations which see an absolute correspondence are effectively remoilding Hebbel, Nazifying him. It will be another aim in this thesis to provide, when it should prove necessary, precisely this closer study. National Socialist thought, for all the heterogeneity of its ideals and the fragmentation of its ideological system, revolved around a number of central ideas or Schwerpunkte, and when Hebbel was discussed by critics, it was usually in relation to one or other of these central obsessions.

CHAPTER ONE The Rise and Fall of Nietzschean Anti- Semitism REACTIONS OF ANTI- SEMITES PRIOR TO 1900 Discussions and remarks about Jews and Judaism can be found throughout Nietzsche’s writings, from the juvenilia and early letters until the very end of his sane existence. But his association with anti-Semitism during his life- time culminates in the latter part of the 1880s, when Theodor Fritsch, the editor of the Anti- Semitic Correspondence, contacted him. Known widely in the twentieth century for his Anti- Semites’ Catechism (1887), which appeared in forty- nine editions by the end of the Second World War, Fritsch wrote to Nietz sche in March 1887, assuming that he harbored similar views toward the Jews, or at least that he was open to recruitment for his cause.1 We will have an opportunity to return to this episode in chapter five, but we should observe that although Fritsch erred in his assumption, from the evidence he and the German public possessed at the time, he had more than sufficient reason to consider Nietzsche a like- minded thinker. First, in 1887 Nietzsche was still associated with Richard Wagner and the large circle of Wagnerians, whose ideology contained obvious anti- Semitic tendencies. Nietzsche’s last published work on Wagner, the deceptive encomium Richard Wagner in Bayreuth (1876), may contain the seeds of Nietzsche’s later criticism of the composer, but when it was published, it was regarded as celebratory and a sign of Nietzsche’s continued allegiance to the Wagnerian cultural move- ment.

This constitutes a serious gap. Ostjude;1 were the first and mos t vulnerable targets of the newl~r radicalized anti-Semi tism. It !rst o"ers a summary of all the places he lived and stayed in, as well as his travel details, in- cluding information about the modes of transport. It then puts this data in its political, military and personal/private context. Additional information relating to the type of transportation used, Hitler’s physical remains and the destruction he left behind are also included. Biographies on Hitler have researched sources dating back to the period between 1889 and 1918. Such biographers – especially in more recent times – were able to as- sess new material and correct the mistakes made by other authors in the past. Prominent examples include Anton Joachimsthaler (1989, 2000, 2003, 2004) and Brigitte Hamann (2002, 2008) ades of Hitler’s life. Hitler became politically active in 1919. Sources from the early years are scarce and relatively neutral. However, soon after that, the tone of the sources is in#uenced heav- ily by the political attitudes of contemporary journalism. Objective information waned, and reports were either glori!ed or highly disapproving. References to travel, the means of transport used, etc do exist to some degree, but are often also contradictory.

    Adolf Bartels (* 15. November 1862 in Wesselburen – † 7. März 1945 in Weimar), Sohn eines Schlossermeisters, ältestes von neun Kindern. Nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums in Meldorf (1877-1882), das er aus Geldnot vor dem Abitur abbrechen musste, war er als Nachhilfelehrer und Amtsgerichtsschreiber in Meldorf tätig. An der Universität Leipzig studierte er von 1885 bis 1887 Staatswissenschaften, Literatur, Geschichte und Philosophie, wechselte dann an die Universität Berlin, brach aber 1888 das Studium ab und wirkte von 1889 bis 1895 als Redakteur und Theaterkritiker im Unterhaltungsteil „Didaskalia“ des „Frankfurter Journals“. 1896 zog er nach Weimar, wo er als freier Schriftsteller lebte und seinen Roman „Die Dithmarscher“ (1898), sowie zahlreiche literaturkritische Aufsätze publizierte, von denen er die „Grenzboten“-Artikel als Buch „Die deutsche Dichtung der Gegenwart. Die Alten und die Jungen“ (1897) erscheinen ließ. Er war neben Friedrich Lienhard ein Verfechter der bodenständigen „Heimatkunst“ („Heimatkunst. Ein Wort zur Verständigung“, 1904), trat für Friedrich Hebbels und Klaus Grothes Werke ein und widmete dem Naturalisten Gerhart Hauptmann die erste Monographie (1897). Als Literarhistoriker nahm er mit der von völkischem und antisemitischem Ungeist durchdrungenen „Geschichte der deutschen Literatur“ (erstmals Leipzig 1901/1902; neue Ausgabe in 3 Bänden, Leipzig 1924-1928) großen und verhängnisvollen Einfluss. Mit manischer Besessenheit trennte er hier und in anderen Schriften zwischen Juden und Nichtjuden und bekämpfte die Dekadenz-Literatur, für deren Aufkommen er ebenfalls die Juden verantwortlich machte. Als Forum seiner nationalistischen Ansichten diente ihm auch seine Literaturzeitschrift „Deutsches Schrifttum“ (1909-1933).     CULTURAL HISTORY AND LITERARY IMAGINATION This book provides a view of literary life under the Nazis, highlighting • Guy Tourlamain the ambiguities, rivalries and conflicts that determined the cultural climate of that period and beyond. Focusing on a group of writers – in particular, Hans Grimm, Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer, Wilhelm Schäfer, Emil Strauß, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen and Rudolf Binding – it examines the continuities in völkisch-nationalist thought in Germany from c.1890 into the post-war period and the ways in which völkisch-nationalists identified themselves in opposition to four successive German regimes: the Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic. Although their work Völkisch predated Hitler’s National Socialist movement, their contribution to preparing the cultural climate for the rise of Nazism ensured them continued prominence in the Third Reich. Those who survived into the post-war era continued to represent the völkisch-nationalist worldview in the West German public sphere, opposing both Socialism and National Writers the Soviet and liberal-democratic models for Germany’s future. While not uncontroversial, they were able to achieve significant publishing success, suggesting that a demand existed for their works among the German public, stimulating debate about the nature of the recent past and its effect on Germany’s cultural and political identity and position in the world. Völkisch Writers and National Socialism Guy Tourlamain received his D.Phil. from Oxford University in 2007. There could be a number of reasons for this, not least the system of categorization known to, and favoured by, Ammianus, which for him was the system of categorization innate to the world (although in his context this was already contested).1 That Ammianus captured the phenomenon of these Christ-centred groups in the categories of his world is of course what one would expect: ‘Categories structure and order the world for us.
