Introduction

The young Brazilian descendant of English, Charles Miller, who is credited with the paternity of , never imagined becoming the founder of the best football in the world, when he disembarked in Brazil in 1894 with two leather balls in his luggage.

"Miller did not intend to found anything. He just liked football, like many other young people do like surfing, tennis or volleyball, "says Brazilian historian Joel Rufino dos Santos in the political history of Brazilian football.

Remember then, although football was already in the doldrums in where cricket had displaced it as a national sport, what Miller brought to Brazil was a university and bourgeois sport. Elegant and obedient to a code.

Dos Santos explains that Miller did not like cricket and that is why, in 1895, he organized the Sao Paulo Athletic Club, the first football team, which gave the pioneering teams of sport in

Brazil: the Fluminense in . Janeiro in 1902; the Fuss-Ball-Club and the Gremio

2

Foot-Ball- -alegrense, in the southern state of the following year and, the Sport Club of in 1904.

He says that during the first 10 years, soccer in Brazil was not a national sport and much less popular. He describes it as an English and elite game. "... The players were mostly technicians, industrialists or English engineers, who talked about the field, full-back, inside-right, referee, linesman, etc."

He says that soccer was discriminatory at the time. Those who did not have money to buy a ball, uniforms or the cheapest tickets to watch a game, attended by looking over the walls of the field, but even those who managed to enter the general felt intruders: when the players greeted the audience, they never addressed themselves to them but to the young and high-ranking girls who occupied the most expensive places

But despite that beginning, football took root in Brazilian culture and along with music became its most popular expression. Many governments wanted to make political use of football but they did not always succeed in their purpose. Even several victories of the Brazilian team in a

World Cup did not always correspond to the electoral victories of the current governments.

"Brazil's victory in the 1994 Cup was accompanied by the triumph at the polls of former

President Fernando Henrique Cardoso and that of 2002 with the election of former President

3

Luiz Inácio Lula da . That means that, even though football is very important for the

Brazilian people, it did not always influence political disputes..

In any case, soccer is still the sport that most awakens passions and moves the most crowds. From the first World Cup in 1930 to the present, this world meeting turned into a mega event: 200 teams played the games of the qualifiers for the South African Cup in 2010 and of that total they only qualified 31 in the dispute of the final phase, together with the host country.

When it all began in 1930, the participation was only 13 teams and at that time did not imagine that a World Cup became the event of great proportions or a great nightmare, as it has been for Brazil to move forward a monumental investment that Today, 55 percent of Brazilians do not support, because they believe that it will be more detrimental than a benefit for the country, according to the most recent survey of the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.

Known as "La Verde-amarela" or "La Canarinha", she has been affiliated with FIFA since 1923 and is an associate member and founder of Conmebol since 1916. It also holds the record of being the only team that has participated in all editions of the World Cup, although nineteen editions have been held so far, it could even be said that Brazil qualified in twenty editions, since it is host in the Copa 2014 World Cup. For all these achievements, Conmebol considers it the most glorious of all the national associations of South America and the World.

4

He has been the only team in the world to win the FIFA Team of the Year award 12 times, being the team that won the most times in the world, 4 times the FIFA Fair Play Award for fair play, 1 Prize most attractive team by FIFA and 1 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports.

The gallery of Brazilian stars that have dressed the "verdeamarela" shirt is very wide, among the most outstanding are , , Ronaldo, , Kaka, Pelé, among others. The national team does not have a home stadium like many other teams and national teams. For this reason the selection plays its friendly and qualifying matches in different scenarios. Among these are the legendary Maracanã Stadium, which hosted the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.

The João Havelange Olympic stadium where the Brazilian team played qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup. However, the Brazilian team played official matches for the

World Cup qualifiers Germany 2006 in smaller stadiums such as the Vivaldo stadium in

Manaus, the Pinheirao stadium in , the Rey Pelé stadium in Maceió, the Serra Dorada stadium in Goiânia and the Mangueirão stadium in Belém.

The official uniform of the Brazilian National Team consists of a yellow shirt, blue shorts and white socks. The visitor's uniform consists of shirt and blue stockings and white pants. Brazil from its beginnings occupied clothing (t-shirt, trousers and stockings) of white color until the

World Cup of 1950. After the famous "Maracanazo", he changed his uniform for the current one making his debut in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland with the win of 5 a 0 in front of Mexico at the Stade des Charmilles in the city of Geneva.

5

It is estimated that the World Cup that is about to start in Brazil will be one of the most expensive in history and will reach more than 13,500 million dollars, according to figures from the organizing committee at the end of 2013, but there are estimates that costs will rise to the

20,000 million dollars, due, mainly, to the unforeseen costs that represented the ambitious construction of 12 stadiums that, apparently, tripled the budget that Brazil had foreseen.

In the last editions of the Cup, almost all the nations of the planet were registered in the qualifiers. In the 2006 German Cup, the 30 days of the final phase captured a television audience of some 32 billion viewers, according to official figures and this year the is expected to increase.

The countries have spent millions of dollars this year on the displacement of their equipment and the media that will accompany their performance, but the Brazilians believe that very little or nothing of that investment will benefit Brazil at the end of the championship.

Chapter I

Brazilian Soccer Characteristics

1.1. Brazil and Soccer History

Brazil soccer history is crowded with great moments that comprehend trophies and great players that were born in this country during last years. Soccer football is profoundly linked with Brazilian culture and customs due to a worldwide point of view as a leader in soccer national teams.

Soccer football in Brazil was brought by sailors, specifically British and Dutch sailors on the late 1800s. Those sailors kept themselves busy at Sao Paulo beaches while playing a game in the sand, a game similar to nowadays soccer. Main British characters on bringing soccer onto Brazil were Oscar Cox and Charles Miller. Strict game tactics, techniques, and deliberated movements were the main characteristics that described the first soccer primitive game styles. Teams were made up by Brazilian socially important people. (Arjol, 2012)

Beach soccer transformed itself soon into Street soccer, and it brought within some legends such as Pele, Ronaldo, Romario, , Ronaldinho and the latest one , as many other yet to be named. Brazilian society with time, helped the game itself to suffer some inner changes, leading to a drastically new style. The new game style was highly popular, with a defensive style and the substitution of the tactic movement that was a sort of

7

British signature, for a mainly speed game style. Growth of soccer community itself, lead to the creation of the Brazilian Soccer Confederacy in 1914.

The game was rapidly played by the Brazilian people. And so on, the first World Cup was celebrated in 1930, while Brazil was one of the few countries that actually had a national team participating the FIFA World Cup. Even though Brazil was eliminated during the first round, it was just Brazilian history about to start in soccer. As a result, more and more people got into the game.

1.1.1 International participation of Brazil National Soccer Team.

In 1950, world cup was admitted by Brazil. The cup final will be remembered

through the years, due to a high end professional show demonstrated by Brazil and

Uruguay. The game was watched by 200,000 people at the location, even though Brazil

lost.

Brazilian soccer history includes 5 international titles, while having great

renowned stars, worldwide acclaimed, such as: Ronaldo, , Ronaldinho, Adriano,

Romario, Zico, Rivaldo, Garrincha, , , Dida, Kaka, those are just

few from the huge list of Brazilian soccer stars.

Many players through Brazilian soccer history came from the Street soccer. It is

where all professional soccer players have their roots. It, as a game, served as a viable

8

path for escaping failure and poverty, including Pele. “I learned everything about life, from a ball at my feet”, as cited by Brazilian player, Ronaldinho. (Balmer et al, 2007)

1.2. Soccer scientific research

Many researches analyze the constant change on the ball design and how the Surface can contribute into a different in its trajectory once it is hit by the player during the game.

The analysis conducts the research‟s into a more deep comprehension on how the air density and a reduction on it as a determining factor, can also contribute in higher altitude matches, on leading onto impressive ball trajectories.

1.2.1. Performance analysis methods on a soccer team.

There are some researchers that considerate that environmental factor can

interfere on how players can carry out game and team coordination in order to gain

control of a specific situation. However, in terms of interaction between involved factors

(biological, psychological, social) in performance, it is not clear enough about the path

that needs to be taken in the development path to reach the best performance possible.

(Araujo, 2005)

10

1.2.2. Match Analysis Concept.

Match analysis methods, a method applied to a soccer player in specific, is generally divided into three main aspects. Technical abilities, tactical abilities and physical state. Technical abilities aspect rely on the quality of the abilities that were used by the player during a game. The tactical compound usually makes reference to the general game strategy and the game style that was used to defeat his marking competition

(rival position).

Physical state involves all movements and efforts done by the player during the entire game. It can also be focused as the movements or action made by all the players in the area on a specific situation in order to maintain control o even gain control of the ball.

1.2.3. Amisco System.

Soccer games nowadays are a basic part of the training process. As expected there are many systems available to register and analyze the games of the soccer clubs. Amisco systems have been applied since its creation on the early 2000s until now. It has been used by some of the most important soccer teams of Spanish, French, German and British soccer leagues.

11

Data analysis of information previously registered within the Amisco system is made from double point of view. In the first place, there is the visualization of the actions of the team related to a specific player; this is obtained from an analysis since a two dimension view that is completed with the slow analysis of the entire game. The second point of view if brought from statistics, data analyzed from the physical, technical, tactical development from a specific player during the entire soccer game. (Frencken et al, 2011)

12

Chapter II

Brazilian Soccer Decay

2.1. Match Analysis application for the Brazilian team

The memory of the fans has been undermined by the memory of the last World Cup presentation of the Brazilian team and its performance. The way in which the rival teams completely reduced Brazil possibilities is unprecedented in an abundant history of success. It has overshadowed pride with the most demanding fans in football. But change is not exogenous to the team, it's time for a reinvention from the inner parts.

The playstyle of the former world champion is more conservative in the attack to not neglect the media area and avoid backlash that blur it. Its tactical system in the attack remains dangerous when it comes to disturbing the opposite, with talented players and the best clubs in Europe. Brazil, among other things, must not suffer another defeat similar to the ones of the last years. (Frencken et al, 2007)

2.2. Game selection for match analysis

Games were selected randomly from the period of 2012 to 2017. The selected games were Brazil-; Brazil- ; Brazil-; Brazil-.

13

2.3 Game Analysis and interpretation

The offensive reference of the establishment has its own name: Neymar. Dunga the technical director, knows that he has unquestionable potential and has outlined a scheme that favors him in his common display of gamestyle. His proposal of attack responds to Neymar's needs to be decisive in the last third of the court. The former Santos player will have a leading role in his game, because the virtue of the team is to match with him to clarify how to get out, transcend and define.

This is the most used formation for the Brazilian Team.

Image 1.Tactic team formation Source: http://www.zonalmarking.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/brazil.jpg

14

2.4 Opening the sides

The sides are the starting area of the ball. The sides usually open up to the horizontal

line, so that the plants can come out in a clear view of which flank is the most accessible. The

ends are also located on the sides to link the play. With this dynamic, the first triangulation

can start at goalkeeper‟s feet. It seeks to take advantage of the amplitude of the court, this is

part of the identity of the "selection". (Aroso et al, 2004)

2.5 Projection of sides

The change with respect to previous technical directions is that only a defender is

projected in advance. This responds to Dunga's need to have superiority with the defensive

transition. As Oscar cannot be injured, we could see Coutinho the player as a substitute, who

also plays in English football as the far left.

2.6 Trident Formation

Based on this need not neglect the rear, the counterattacks follow this pattern with a

basic order to achieve danger with the desired area. This displacement occurs when a hitch

drives the spherical contemplating three moving companions to divide or look for the pass

between lines. If the play has a counter-attack, there will be at least six men waiting for the

reaction.

15

2.7 Interior Tour

Both and Dunga, technical‟s, are well aware that Neymar has an

educated game play to overcome rivals by the left sector. His advance starts from the side

and can reach rebound zone, in it, his companions expand their radius of action to triangle.

The most important thing is that you can get profits from the surprise factor. The Brazilian

crack knows how to read the opponent's moment to get hurt with its confusing diagonals.

When he runs this race, we are seeing the best Brazilian player in his pure state. (Gabbet,

2008)

2.8 Fifth man

In defense work there is a support from the pair of contentions towards the bottom to

achieve superiority in the last block. It occurs when the opponent arrives on the outside with

opportunity to focus. With this it is looked for rigorous neither to leave rebounds near

Jefferson nor to leave spaces in the decompensate area. The line of 5 players can be violated

with qualifications to back of the defenders; Brazil until now has proven solvent exercising

its defensive positioning.

25

Chapter IV

4.1. Viable plan for sport support

It should be noted that in the development plan, the theme of sport is addressed in an ephemeral and without depth considering that it emphasizes the infrastructure of sports venues since it is mentioned that in the country there are 54780 sports venues, but 27% of them are unfinished, 15% are in regular state and 40% in poor condition, so their work plan for the quarterback focuses on expanding and improving the country's sports infrastructure: take into account actions such as reviewing, evaluating and optimizing the current inventory and creating the Social Fund for Sports and Recreational National Infrastructure.

Another aspect is to promote the certification of municipalities that meet established equipment requirements as well as promote the practice of sport: through the design and implementation of programs to maintain, stimulate and qualify physical activity in educational establishments.

„The ultimate of this development plan as a sport is to create the National System of

Sports and Academic Competencies "Sucerate", aimed especially at the vulnerable population. It is to understand that the public policy of the sport must be oriented to create sports culture programs, from an early age. In a society like the ecuadorian one that faces problems of drug addiction, prostitution, delinquency, alcoholism, internal conflict among other social problems, it is clear that sport needs to be promoted from childhood, however it is clarified that the education

26

system has not founded the necessary foundations to make the chair of physical education, not only a kind of "procedure" but a philosophy of life.

The invitation is to invest resources and budget in sports, recreation and physical activity programs, the advantages are innumerable. The data that constantly show scientific studies show that the practice of sport covers a wide range of needs of all people, mainly during childhood and adolescence.

If the administrators of public resources will focus on policies that benefit the population from childhood, then they would not have to implement costly strategies in programs of rehabilitation, detoxification and in general processes of social inclusion. It would be more economical to invest in sports, recreation, physical activity and leisure time programs than in the armed confrontation and other social inclusion policies, which have generated great cultural and social costs, as well as negatively impacting the economy and the security of the country.

It is clear that there must be evolution in the political life of a State, societies have changed and state that the responses to their needs are reflected through public policies in accordance with social demand.
