Former Argentina captain Diego Maradona and ex- Brazil striker Romario, now a member of his country’s congress, are long-standing critics of the football establishment in the region. The pair met with 20 South American clubs and a group of Uruguayan lawyers to demand change in the way football is administered. “We have seen, with astonishment and great sadness, that foot- ball is for just a few,” Maradona told reporters after a meeting of the group in Sao Paulo on Wednesday night. “It doesn’t belong to the clubs, the supporters or the players. So we are going to form a commission to unmask these people who do so much harm to the game. “It’s very serious, but thanks to all of us who are not afraid of those people ... we are here so that we can have a more transpar- ent football,” he added. Romario described CONMEBOL as worse than the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), which he has fre- quently criticized. “The situation is really much more serious than we imagined,” he said. “What has been presented here is one of the biggest dis- graces that I have seen. I couldn’t imagine that there was an institu- tion which ... did so much harm to the sport. “We have to get more people together. • Futsal Guide

    Futsal Guide

FUTSAL GUIDE INTRODUCTION TO FUTSAL FUTSAL was first played in 1885. Roger Grain in Montevideo, Uruguay defined the modern standard set of rules in 1932. FUTSAL’s essential elements consist of five players a side on basketball-sized courts, indoor and outdoor surfaces without the use of sidewalls, and a no-bounce ball. The sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pinpoint passing. The no-bounce ball requires players to propel the ball using skill and the proper technique, rather than rely on the bounce of the ball. FUTSAL promotes and develops skills as: • Ball mastery and control • Accurate and quick passing and receiving • Dribbling • Shooting skills • Balance • Coordination • Agility • Ability of Anticipation • Individual and team play • Fair Play • Tactical awareness • Transition from Attack to Defense and from Defense to Attack World class FUTSAL player Falcao The priority in FUTSAL is to motivate players in a safe environment conducive to learning. The more pleasure especially kids derive from their participation, the more they wish to play and practice on their own. While their instinct to play is natural, their affection and appreciation for FUTSAL must be cultivated. FUTSAL can be the base to such goals because it: • Allows players numerous opportunities to frequently touch ball. • Presents many opportunities to create chances and scoring goals. • Encourages regaining possession of the ball as a productive, fun and rewarding part of the game (defending). • Maximizes active participation and minimizes inactivity and boredom. • Makes the game more coach friendly because the game is simpler, thus making it easier to recruit more volunteer "coaches".

Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ

Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ In 2018 the World Cup will be held in Russia and the buzz around the world is one of ecstasy, particularly for young countries that qualified for the first time, like Iceland and Panama. With World Cup fixtures, the Netherlands and the United States, failing to qualify for the final stage, there is talk of major change in both federations. The United States, in particular, had been mak- ing important strides in recent Cups, making it to the second round routinely. This setback will undoubtedly make U.S. Soccer come to terms with the real- ity that major changes need to be made in order for the team to return to the world stage, especially as the U.S. has submitted a joint bid (with Mexico and Canada) to host the 2026 World Cup. Recently, I heard a network announcer ask his colleagues, “Do you remem- ber the first World Cup that you saw?” It was interesting to hear recollections on what is generally recognized as the greatest sporting event on earth. Here are my own earliest recollections, and how they have shaped my life. The first World Cup that I watched was the 1966 event hosted by England (the last one televised in black and white). The Cup introduced me to “El Rey” Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) from Brazil, the “Black Panther of Mo- zambique,” Eusebio from Portugal, and the Charlton brothers, Jackie and Bob- by, from the eventual winner England. I remember sitting on the living room floor of our house in Mexicali and hearing the announcer continually mention the name “Charlton.” As days went by and England advanced, it dawned on me that there were two Charltons, Bobby and Jackie—gradually, I was able to distinguish between the brothers.
