This notebook contains directions for processions and

ceremonies; it shows gates and fences of of.ficial buildings.

The graphic symbols indicate sentries, guards, and persons

welcoming or seeing off lithe august person", probably the

shogun or emperor.

The symbols mean "where people stand when the

august person leaves",

"where people stand when the

august person returns",

the route of the emperor and

his entourage,

gates.

In modern times a scribe used the backs of the pages for recording addresses. Later, ihe book1.et was resbored to its original fom.

A complete list of low-class inns patronized by peasants

financing their pilgrimages on the instal1Jnent plan. The

black rectangles on these pages indicate villages without

inns. The book hung from the belt of the pilgrim when he
