HARTOG* Faith Baptist Theological Seminary ABSTRACT. John Calvin drew from patristic authors in a selective manner. His preference for the theological perspectives of Augustine is readily evident. Nevertheless, while he resonated with the doctrine of Augustine, he touted the interpretive and homiletic labors of John Chrys- ostom. Even though Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion critiqued Chrysostom’s under- standing of grace and free will, the Antiochene bishop is the most frequently referenced patris- tic author within Calvin’s commentaries. Calvin composed a preface to a projected edition of Chrysostom’s homilies (Praefatio in Chrysostomi Homilias). This preface argued for the necessity of reaching the general public with secondary aids along with the scriptures, explained Calvin’s esteem for Chrysostom’s homilies above other patristic texts, and acknowledged the theological dissimilarities that separated his views from Chrysostom’s. The Praefatio’s assessments reveal Calvin’s own hermeneutical, pastoral, and theological priorities. Calvin’s evaluations of Chrys- ostom and the other fathers are a window into his own interpretive concerns, homiletical aims, and dogmatic emphases. KEYWORDS: biblical interpretation, Calvin, Chrysostom, hermeneutics The church fathers undoubtedly influenced John Calvin’s thought (Tor- rance 1988: 720). Back in 1964, William Newton Todd completed a doctoral dissertation that examined Calvin’s use of patristic sources. ‘In general’, concluded Todd, ‘his knowledge of the Fathers, councils, and history of Christian antiquity was outstanding for his day’ (Todd 1964: 169). -

Mai 1518, mitten in einer sich dramatisch zuspitzenden Zeit, welche die Geschichtsschreibung einmal mit dem Namen „Reformation" belegen sollte, schrieb von Heidelberg aus ein junger Dominikanermönch einen Brief nach Schlettstadt, seiner Heimat. Der Empfänger des Briefes war Beatus Rhenanus; der Absender war Martin Bucer, der spätere Reformator von Straßburg. Bucer berichtete in deutlich erregter Stimmung von der Heidelber- ger Disputation, die kurz vorher, am 26. April, hochoffiziell im Hörsaal der philosophischen Fakultät stattgefunden hatte und in deren Zentrum Martin Luther gestanden war. Er schrieb u. a.: „Ich habe gelesen, wie Du mit Deinem Stift unsere Theologen angegriffen und verletzt hast. Dies täte mir wahrlich leid, wenn es vergeblich wäre; und deshalb, damit Du Dir nicht als Sieger vorkommst, weil wir Heidelberger die Sache aufgegeben hätten (denn sonst hat uns unser Senior, der Wimpfeling, ganz hervorragend beschützt), will ich Dir einen Theologen entgegenhalten, zwar keinen von den unsrigen, der aber dieser Tage bei uns zu hören war... Es ist Martin, jener Kritiker der Ablässe, mit denen wir bisher viel zu nachsichtig waren... Mit Erasmus stimmt er in allem überein, außer daß er ihn in dem einen zu übertreffen scheint, das, was jener nur andeutet, dieser offen und frei verkündet"2. Beatus Rhenanus, der Schlettstädter Humanist, erscheint bei Bucer als kri- tischer antischolastischer Theologe; Wimpfeling als Vaterfigur einer Heidel- berger humanistischen Opposition, und Erasmus von Rotterdam, die überra- gende Gestalt des europäischen Humanismus, als konform mit dem Augusti- nermönch Martin Luther3. -

The research conveys Melanchthon’s mediating influence in disputes between Reformation churches, in particular between the German churches and King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1539. The political background to those events is presented in detail, so that Melanchthon’s place in this history can be better understood. This is not a study of Melanchthon’s overall theology. In this work, I have shown how the Saxons and the conservative and reform-minded English considered matters of conscience and adiaphora. I explore the German and English unification discussions throughout the negotiations delineated in this dissertation, and what they respectively believed about the Church’s authority over these matters during a tumultuous time in European history. The main focus of this work is adiaphora, or those human traditions and rites that are not necessary to salvation, as noted in Melanchthon’s Confessio Augustana of 1530, which was translated into English during the Anglo-Lutheran negotiations in 1536. Melanchthon concluded that only rituals divided the Roman Church and the Protestants. -

Abstract From a reading of the literary excursus found in the fmal chapters of book 1 of Velleius' work, 1 have sought to analyse the characteristics of the Greece - Rome comparison and of the similar Athens - Rome comparison, two themes that assume considerable importancein the ideology adopted by the author in bis narration. The exaltation ofRome, and earlier of ltaly, considered fromthe aspect of bis literary production, are perfectly coherent with the undercurrent of all of Velleius' work, eulogy oftheRome - ltaly communion. After a hiatus of almost forty years, during which the field was well served by Josef IJsewijn and Dirk Sacré’s Companion to Neo-Latin Studies (Leuven, 1977), three new handbooks have recently appeared in rapid succession: Brill’s Encyclopaedia of the Neo-Latin World, ed. Philip Ford, Jan Bloemendal, and Charles Fantazzi (Leiden, 2014); The Oxford Handbook of Neo- Latin, ed. Sarah Knight and Stefan Tilg (Oxford, 2015); and A Guide to Neo-Latin Literature, ed. Victoria Moul (Cambridge, 2017). At the same time, my “Recent Trends in Neo-Latin Studies,” Renaissance Quarterly 69 (2016): 617–29 appeared, signifying that Neo-Latin has received the same recognition that English, history, and German have in the journal of record for the period in which the greatest amount of Neo-Latin literature was produced. -

Humanists and Europe Printers: new cultural actors in Europe beginning in the late fifteenth century Catherine KIKUCHI ABSTRACT Printing was born in Germany with the production of the Gutenberg Bible, although printers set up shop across all of Europe beginning in the first decades of the century. They specialized, organized, and collaborated with merchants and bookshops. This new industry was particularly concentrated in merchant cities and university towns. Their editorial strategies sought to reach an increasingly broader audience which was not limited to persons of letters, although important printers worked with the Humanists for the diffusion of high quality revised editions. Their collaboration involved ancient texts, such as the Greek editions of Aldus Manutius, as well as religious texts, the Bible in particular. Printing was thus a driver of religious and intellectual renewal, but was also suspected of conveying harmful and heretical ideas; with the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, printers were increasingly controlled by political and religious authorities, a control that some of them were able to circumvent. The invention and diffusion of printing The birth of printing in Europe is dated as 1452, when Johann Gutenberg produced the 42-line Bible in Mainz with the help of Peter Schöffer and funding from Johann Fust. This invention takes its place in the long-term history of technology, stretching from Chinese and Korean printing methods to engraved Bibles for the poor in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The true change with Gutenberg was not so much the press itself, but the use of movable type. Furthermore, the success of printing was also due to its connection with important merchants who invested in this new art, such as Johann Fust. -

Oosterhoff, University of Edinburgh, [email protected] Argument: Students entered Renaissance universities as apprentices in the craft of books. In the decades around 1500, such university training began to involve not only manuscript circulation, but also the production and the use of books in the new medium of print. Through their role in the crafting of books, I show how a circle of students around Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples gained the experience needed to become bookmen. -
