HARTOG* Faith Baptist Theological Seminary ABSTRACT. John Calvin drew from patristic authors in a selective manner. His preference for the theological perspectives of Augustine is readily evident. Nevertheless, while he resonated with the doctrine of Augustine, he touted the interpretive and homiletic labors of John Chrys- ostom. Even though Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion critiqued Chrysostom’s under- standing of grace and free will, the Antiochene bishop is the most frequently referenced patris- tic author within Calvin’s commentaries. Calvin composed a preface to a projected edition of Chrysostom’s homilies (Praefatio in Chrysostomi Homilias). This preface argued for the necessity of reaching the general public with secondary aids along with the scriptures, explained Calvin’s esteem for Chrysostom’s homilies above other patristic texts, and acknowledged the theological dissimilarities that separated his views from Chrysostom’s. The Praefatio’s assessments reveal Calvin’s own hermeneutical, pastoral, and theological priorities. Calvin’s evaluations of Chrys- ostom and the other fathers are a window into his own interpretive concerns, homiletical aims, and dogmatic emphases. Back in 1964, William Newton Todd completed a doctoral dissertation that examined Calvin’s use of patristic sources. ‘In general’, concluded Todd, ‘his knowledge of the Fathers, councils, and history of Christian antiquity was outstanding for his day’ (Todd 1964: 169). -

In the first decades of the sixteenth century, it was these companies, mostly from southern Germany and the Italian city-states, who dominated the European trade in Asian and American goods, whose capital funded Spanish and Portuguese royal policies overseas, and whose agents played crucial roles in establishing the Spanish and Portuguese empires and colonial trade. -

This study presents a methodological framework for understanding early modern patronage in which the arts are necessarily viewed as interconnected, and patronage is understood as a complex and often contradictory process that involved all elements of society. First, this study examines the legacy of arts patronage that Albrecht V inherited from his Wittelsbach predecessors and developed during his reign, from 1550-1579. Albrecht V‟s patronage is then divided into three areas: northern princely humanism, traditional religion and sociological propaganda. -

Die Erinnerung an Vergessenes in der Byzantinistik seit ihren Anfängen im 15./16. Jahrhundert FRANZ TINNEFELD (München) Der Tübinger Gräzist Martin Crusius leitete um 1600 seine Oratio in Pulcheriam Augustam, eine oströmische Kaiserin im 5. Jahrhundert, mit einer Betrachtung über die Aufgabe des Historikers ein, das Vergangene der Vergessenheit zu entreißen, und verglich ihn mit dem Plünderer eines Grabes (tymborychos),1 vielleicht ein zu negativ besetztes Bild für das durchaus sinnvolle Leitthema der drei Teilkonferenzen Erinnern und Vergessen in den Kulturen Südosteuropas, dem sich der vorliegende Beitrag einordnet. Allerdings geht es hier nicht um die Erinnerung an Vergessenes in einer Kultur Südosteuropas, sondern in der Wis- senschaft, die sich mit Byzanz beschäftigt, einer Kultur, die territorial nur zum Teil in Südosteuropa angesiedelt war. Im folgenden gehe ich der Geschichte der Byzantinistik vom 16. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert2 nach und versuche ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit die allmähliche Formung dieser Kulturwissen- schaft aus dem andauernden Bemühen zu erweisen, vergessene Aspekte und Arbeitsfelder des Faches zu entdecken und wissenschaftlich zu durchdringen. Dabei gehe ich nach Möglichkeit, wenn auch nicht in jedem einzelnen Fall, der Frage nach, welche Umstände jeweils zu solchen Entdeckungen führten. Ich verzichte auf eine Berücksichtigung der Byzanzrezeption in der Früh- zeit des italienischen Humanismus,3 die noch an ein in Rudimenten fortdau- erndes „Reich“ anknüpfen konnte. Es ist jedoch festzuhalten, dass in der Zeit um das Ende von Byzanz, also kurz vor und nach der Eroberung Konstantino- pels durch die Türken im Jahr 1453, eine solche Rezeption erstmals möglich wurde, weil zunächst in Italien und in anderen Ländern Westeuropas das hu- manistische Interesse an der Antike den Import einer großen Zahl griechischer Handschriften begünstigte. -

2012 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PAG. 127–146 PHILOLOGICA 3 / GRAECOLATINA PRAGENSIA XXIV IdyLLIUM PATRIA UPPER LUSATIA THROUGH THE EYES OF A LATE HUMANIST AUTHOR1 JAN ZDICHYNEC The Dictionary of Latin Writers (Slovník latinských spisovatelů), which Eva Kuťáková2 was a co-author and co-editor of in the first and second edition, provides the basic information about many Latin writers of the Early Modern Period of impor- tance in connection with Europe and Bohemia in particular. And yet Caspar Peucer (1525–1602), who created his works in the spirit of Latin Humanism and who, more- over, fostered numerous contacts with Bohemian surroundings, is not mentioned in it. Peucer, a professor of Wittenberg’s university, was an all-around intellectual who devoted himself primarily to medicine, mathematics and astronomy, but also worked as a theologian and politician. He was born in the Upper Lusatian town of Bautzen, meaning he was the subject of the Bohemian king, under whose rule Upper Lusatia belonged to up until 1635. From the Bohemian milieu he was in regular contact with the members of the Unity of the Brethren, particularly with his contemporary, Jan Bla- hoslav (1523–1571), who studied in Wittenberg at the same time as Peucer.3 He even exchanged letters with the scientist and doctor, Tadeáš Hájek of Hájek (1525–1600), Pietro Andrea Gregorio Matthioli (1500–1577), Vavřinec Špán (1530–1575) and also communicated with the scholars in Upper Hungary (present-day Slovakia) and in Transylvania. Peucer was extremely literarily prolific and in his age thanks to his works and troubled lot in life, very well known. -

The Word they still shall let remain: A Reformation pop-up exhibit This exhibit marks the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation in Europe. We invite you to explore different perspectives on the Reformation, including the impact of print in producing the German, Swiss, radical, and English reform movements, as well as the response from the Catholic Church and the political ramifications of reform. Indulgences granted by several Popes of Rome in the several churches of Rome collected by William Crashaw in Fiscus Papalis, 1621. V.a.510(8), fol. 1-2v In 1095, Pope Urban II first introduced indulgences as pardons for sin to entice fighters to join the crusades. Later, these ephemeral sheets of forgiveness were granted for completed pilgrimages, for purchase to release souls from purgatory (the doctrine itself authorized in 1439), and were sold to cover sins during life out of the “Treasury of Merits,” a spiritual coffer that contained redemption through the deaths of martyrs and Christ. Rome officially announced the sale of indulgences in exchange for pardon of sin in 1476, 41 years before the 95 Theses. Pope Leo X provided the bishopric of Mainz to Albrecht of Brandenburg and then allowed him to sell indulgences to pay back personal debts. Indulgences are granted to this day for receiving Holy Communion, reciting the rosary, the exercise of the Stations of the Cross and reading scripture, among other acts. Here we see a manuscript account of the various indulgences offered and received, copied from Crashaw’s Fiscus Papalis and provides information on the amount of time remitted from purgatory. -

The research conveys Melanchthon’s mediating influence in disputes between Reformation churches, in particular between the German churches and King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1539. The political background to those events is presented in detail, so that Melanchthon’s place in this history can be better understood. This is not a study of Melanchthon’s overall theology. In this work, I have shown how the Saxons and the conservative and reform-minded English considered matters of conscience and adiaphora. I explore the German and English unification discussions throughout the negotiations delineated in this dissertation, and what they respectively believed about the Church’s authority over these matters during a tumultuous time in European history. The main focus of this work is adiaphora, or those human traditions and rites that are not necessary to salvation, as noted in Melanchthon’s Confessio Augustana of 1530, which was translated into English during the Anglo-Lutheran negotiations in 1536. Melanchthon concluded that only rituals divided the Roman Church and the Protestants.
