RENAISSANCE RECEPTIONS OF OVID’S TRISTIA DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Gabriel Fuchs, M.A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Frank T. Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -

Wie Was Pieter Gillis ?
Wie was Pieter Gillis ? Op 28 november 1509 werd Pieter Gillis stadsgriffier te Antwerpen. Hij bleef 23 jaar in functie tot zijn schoonzoon, Pieter de Coelenare, op 29 november 1532 zijn taken overnam. Tot in 1530 bewoonde Pieter Gillis het huis van zijn vader, De Biecorf, gelegen op de Kiekenmarkt (thans Eiermarkt) te Antwerpen. De laatste jaren van zijn leven woonde hij in het Werfstraatje (thans Heilige-Geeststraat) waar zijn derde vrouw Kathelijne Draeckx het vruchtgebruik van een huis had. Na zijn opleiding in de Antwerpse papenschool vertrok Pieter al op jonge leeftijd (14 jaar) naar de universiteit van Orléans. Daar was een gerenommeerde rechtsacademie waar heel wat Brabantse juristen gevormd werden ter voorbereiding op een functie in de stadsadministratie. Maar Pieter slaagde er aanvankelijk niet in zich door te zetten. Was hij nog te jong? Was zijn opleiding ontoereikend? Feit is dat hij terug naar huis kwam om corrector te worden in de drukkerij van Dirk Martens. In diens atelier leerde hij Erasmus kennen, van wie Martens in februari 1503 een verzamelboek, ‘Lucubratiunculae aliquot’, uitgaf en een jaar later een ‘Panegyricus’, een lofrede op Filips de Schone. Voor dat laatste werk kwam Erasmus zelf naar Antwerpen: de opdrachtbrief bij de lofrede is geschreven ‘ex officina chalcographica’. Pieter werd een vertrouweling van Erasmus en op aansporing van de Rotterdamse humanist ondernam hij een tweede poging om een titel te verwerven. In juni 1504 schreef ‘Petrus Egidii filius Nicholai Egidii de Antverpia’ zich in als student te Leuven, waarschijnlijk weer aan de rechtsfaculteit. Hij combineerde zijn studies met correctiewerk voor Dirk Martens en vanaf 1509 met zijn opdracht als griffier. -

Nineteenth-century English brown Russia binding, smooth back with blind tooling and gilt lettering: ”Pompei Vita / Plutarchus / MS.”, blind-stamped and gilt with monogram and motto on upper board, and arms on lower cover, brown paper endleaves, edges gilt (Upper inner hinge loose, binding a bit scuffed, occasional minor stains to paper, else in very good condition). Dimensions 215 x 155 mm. Containing Plutarch’s life of Pompey the Great, the Roman republican hero often hailed as an antagonist of tyranny, this is one of about 50 recorded Renaissance manuscripts of the Latin translation from the Greek original completed by either Antonius Tudertinus Pacinus or Jacopo Angeli da Scarperia. The present manuscript provides testimony that the lives continued to circulate independently in manuscript form, even after their assembly into one common collection. PROVENANCE 1. Script and watermarks all point to an Italian origin for this manuscript, likely Northern Italy, Lombardy. -

La exaltación de Roma, y aún antes de Italia, bajo el perfil específico de la producción literaria, resulta ser perfectamente coherente con el planteamiento de fondo de toda la obra velleiana, capaz de exaltar la comuniónRoma - Italia. Abstract From a reading of the literary excursus found in the fmal chapters of book 1 of Velleius' work, 1 have sought to analyse the characteristics of the Greece - Rome comparison and of the similar Athens - Rome comparison, two themes that assume considerable importancein the ideology adopted by the author in bis narration. The exaltation ofRome, and earlier of ltaly, considered fromthe aspect of bis literary production, are perfectly coherent with the undercurrent of all of Velleius' work, eulogy oftheRome - ltaly communion. Grendler’s Encyclopedia of the Renaissance (1999); The Oxford Companion to the Book (2009); Andrew Pettegree’s The Book in the Renaissance (2010); Guglielmo Cavallo’s & Roger Chartier’s A History of Reading in the West (1999); and Jean- François Gilmont’s The Reformation and the Book (1996). While a rich body of literature on the Renaissance exists in the areas peripheral to the mainstream (Croatia, Bohemia, Poland, Hungary), there is little evidence of any dovetailing of research in the West into areas beyond its traditional boundaries. This gives rise to questions: Is there a blind spot in Western scholarship when it comes to the Renaissance to the east? Can the disregard be explained or justified? Obstacles to a more inclusive scholarship are examined and opportunities for a greater integration of research are explored. It is very common to read claims, in Croatian literature on the Renaissance in general and studies on the 15th and 16th century culture of the book and printing in particular, that Croatia was integrally connected to European cultural develop- ments and accomplishments of that period. -

Oosterhoff, University of Edinburgh, [email protected] Argument: Students entered Renaissance universities as apprentices in the craft of books. In the decades around 1500, such university training began to involve not only manuscript circulation, but also the production and the use of books in the new medium of print. Through their role in the crafting of books, I show how a circle of students around Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples gained the experience needed to become bookmen.
