Katharine Cornell The Cornells were one of the many wealthy American families who spent their summers in Cobourg. Colonel Cornell came to Co- bourg in the latter eighteen nineties. He liked the town and later bought .a residence in town which he called Hadfield. Hurst. He brought his wife and' three children up' every summer after that until 1908'when he died. He was very interested in theatricals and had a stage built in his Buffalo home where he, his family and friends put on plays. One of his sons, Peter, a doctor of Medicine, gave up his practice and entered into a career as a stage manager. His daughter, Katharine, became the greatest American broadway star ever. She was born in 1898 in Germany while her father was studying medicine in . She was later baptized in St. Peter's Church in Cobourg. She was educated in private schools in the eastern United States where she enjoyed performing in school plays. In 1919 she decided to pursue a professional career as an actress. She soon became a popular actress and her amazing unique beauty capivated audiences. In 1920 Katharine met Guthrie McClintic; a directer, and later on September 21, 1921, they were married. The event took place in Cobourg, at Katharin~s Aunt Lydia's summer house. Lydia Cornell insisted her niece be married in some sort of religious> or "homey" service rather than a civil one. After that the team of Guthrie McClintic and Katharine Cornell rose to fame. They made a great team. All their plays were successful. The Barretts of Wimpole Street, the Doctor's Dilemma, Romeo and , and were some of their well known successes. Guthrie McClintic died in 1961 and Katharine died in 1974.
