Separations: 1.5 linear feet of duplicate articles and news clippings relating to actors and actresses were removed and disposed of. See Also: Autograph Collection. Biographical Sketch Rev. Edward Carrigan, S.J. (13 January 1892 – 9 May 1944) and Brother Martin Lawrence Carrigan, S.J. (2 October 1893 – 5 November 1977), the sons of Samuel and Margaret Carrigan, were born in Hancock, Michigan. Edward Carrigan entered the Society of Jesus in 1914 and was ordained as a priest. He taught at Xavier in Cincinnati where he later became the dean of the Liberal Arts College from 1930 to 1938. In 1938 He was assigned to Loyola University Chicago. Rev. Carrigan was a professor of English literature, a noted literary critic, and an authority on plays. Martin Carrigan entered the Society of Jesus in 1925 as a postulant Coadjutor Brother. In 1928 he was assigned to Loyola University Chicago as bursar of the university, a position he filled until 1970 when he became the treasurer of the Chicago Jesuit Community. Scope and Content The Carrigan Collection spans the years 1792 to 1971 (bulk 1921-1969) and includes correspondence, notes, articles, news and magazine clippings, playbills and programs, etc. Subjects include Helen Parry Eden, actors, actresses, authors, and 20th century American drama. Arrangement is primarily chronological although playbills and programs are also arranged alphabetically. Box 1 Series 1 includes correspondence, reports, cards, pamphlets, and notes. Subjects include Francis L. Filas, S.J., and Catholic entertainers and entertainment. Series 2: Helen Parry Eden Correspondence, 1921-1944. Boxes 1-2 This series includes correspondence received by Fr. Carrigan from poet Helen Parry Eden. Subjects include poetry, literature, England, Catholicism, and World War II. Series 3: Actors, Actresses, Authors, etc., Biographical Files, 1937-1967, undated. Box 2 This series includes clippings, articles, and pictures clipped from newspapers and magazines. Subjects include John Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore, Danny Kaye, Walt Disney, and Anna Pavlova. Series 4: Playbills, Programs, etc., 1864-1971 (bulk 1921-1969), undated. Boxes 2-8 This series contains playbills and programs from mainly Chicago area theatre, dance, opera, and movie events. Series 6: Images of Actors, Actresses, Authors & Others, 1792-1938, undated. Boxes10-11, 13 This series includes photographs, engravings, and colored magazine prints of actors, actresses, authors, and political figures. Series 7: Scrapbooks, 1915-1940. Boxes 11-13 This series includes scrapbooks that contain programs, playbills, articles, and photographs relating to the theatre.
