FEAST OF FAITH . . . . The Liturgies of Holy Week Holy Week is the culmination of the liturgical year. During these holy days, the liturgy will lead us, with Jesus, to the depths and to the heights. It begins with a harsh juxtaposition, as we carry palms in remembrance of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusa- lem and then listen to the Passion according to Matthew, as the King is handed over for crucifixion. Then, on Holy Thursday, we remember the night Jesus was handed over—the night he gave himself for us and to us, to live in our midst forever in the sacrament of his Body and Blood. On Good Friday, we touch with our hands the mystery of the Lord’s cross, the instrument of torture that has become the tree of life. Then, at the great Easter Vigil, the lighting of the paschal candle speaks to us of the triumph of light over darkness, of life over death. The resurrection of the Lord becomes a living reality in our midst as the catechumens for whom the Church has prayed throughout Lent are plunged into the mystery of Christ’s death and share in the glory of his resurrection. These are indeed holy days, the culmination of the Church’s liturgy, and an invitation to participate in the very life of Christ. Come, let us worship. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. The Fire of Your Love: Religious Orders

“During a Eucharistic Congress, a number of priests from different orders are gathered in a church for Vespers. While they are praying, a fuse blows and all the lights go out. The Benedictines continue praying from memory, without missing a beat. The Jesuits begin to discuss whether the blown fuse means they are dispensed from the obligation to pray Vespers. The Franciscans compose a song of praise for God's gift of brother darkness. The Dominicans revisit their ongoing debate on light as a signification of the transmission of divine knowledge. The Carmelites fall into silence with slow, steady breathing. The parish priest, who is hosting the others, goes to the basement and replaces the fuse.”

There are many religious orders within the one, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, for there is one house, but many rooms (John 14:2). Each of these orders has its own style of prayer life, which is what the joke above plays upon. I thought I would provide some background on these five orders:

Benedictines: Founded in 529 A.D. by St. Benedict of Nursia, they are a monastic religious order, traditionally wearing a black habit (though some use white). Their motto is “Ora et labora” (Pray and work), which is largely the focus of their order: they pray throughout the day, particularly the Divine Office (which is why they are known for memorizing prayers) and they perform various types of manual work. Their notable saints are St. Scholastica and St. Gregory the Great. Jesuits: Officially the Society of Jesus, they were founded in 1540 A.D. by St. Ignatius of Loyola, and are a religious order that does not wear a particular habit. Their motto is “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam” (The greater glory of God). They are a spiritual/academic order and are widely known for debating all things theological. Their notable saints are St. Francis Xavier and St. Aloysius Gonzaga. Franciscans: Founded in 1209 A.D. by St. Francis of Assisi, one order, the conventual Franciscans, wear Grey/Black habits, while the Capuchins typically wear brown. Their motto is “Pax et bonum” (Peace and the good), and they believe in living the gospel, following Jesus, and both fraternity and poverty. Their notable saints are St. Anthony of Padua and St. Clare of Assisi. They focus on the love of Jesus and anything that embraces or demonstrates that love, such as song and prayer. Dominicans: Officially the Order of Preachers, they were founded in 1216 A.D. by St. Dominic of Caleruega. They are a mendicant (poor) religious order who wear a white capuce with hood, a cincture with a rosary, and a black capuce with hood on top. Their motto is “Luudare, benedicere, praedicare” (To Praise, To Bless, To Preach). They are a prayerful and studious order that focuses on preaching and community. Their favored saints are St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Catherine of Siena. Carmelites: Officially known as the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, they were founded in the 12th century by a community of hermits on Mount Carmel in Palestine who were inspired by Elijah. They are a mendicant religious order that wears a brown habit with a white cloak. Their motto is “Zelo zelatus sum pro Domino Deo Exercituum” (With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts). They are a contemplative order focused on prayer, fraternity and service, and following Mary and Elijah as models. The nature of their hermitic order leads them to be quiet, prayerful, and introspective.

SEMANA SANTA . . . . Por el Evangelio del Domingo de Ramos, volvemos al Evangelio según San Marcos. El relato de la Pasión ocupa casi un tercio de todo el Evangelio según Marcos y, de todos los evangelistas, él es quien presenta los detalles más gráficos.
