EMBARKING on the 29th of April, 1841, in the Oriental, a~~iverpool, we steamed briskly down the Mersey, and rapidly losing sight of the port with its thickly clnstered shippi;'g, were in two honrs tossing ahout on the open sea of St. George's Chanuel. Early on the morning of the 1st of May, we anchored in Falmouth roads, where the Indian mails were embarked; and where the greater part of the passengers joined ns. The ship had scarcely got out to sea, when she was assailed with a violent adverse wind,-in nantical parlauce " dead on end;" we were therefore not able to show a stitch of canvas, and as the gale was accompanied by a snccession of heavy squalls, she made b~t poor head-way,-barely four knots. The 4th of the month found us in the Bay of Biscay, so terrible to the imagination of amateur singers and readers of Dibdin, for its long Atlantic swell, and tbe heavy weather generally experienced in crossing it. Nor were we destined to form an exception, as the gale redoubled in fury, obliging us to have every thing made snug, topmasts struck, yards upon deck, and the least possible resistance presented to the wind. Notwithstanding the size of our vessel she often shipped seas; and so heavy was the pitching, that the machinery frequently appeared quite deadened. The next day we were reckoned to be off Cape Finisterre, but at too great a distance to discover any sign of land. On the 7th; the weather moderating and the wind coming from the westward, we pro­ ceeded more rapidly, and at noon passed close to the Rock of Lisbon, at the entrance of the Tagus. We now felt we had entered a warmer clime, and the passengers, many of whose faces we had not till now seen, quitted their berths with one accord, to enjoy the delicious change of temperature. As the sun's heat is here moderated by the pure Atlantic breeze, it was fonnd quite a luxury to keep the deck. \Ve had all sail set, and the porpoises were seen gambolling round the paddles, trying their speed with ours. We anchored under the English batteries, but as the gates were closed, were unable to land. \Ve had, however, plenty: of amusement in observing the noisy Spanish boatmen who came off with fresh provisions; they were the most vociferous set I had ever seen, and continued to swarm the gangway till literally knocked down by some of our sailors.

  • Archaic Eretria
    ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian.     historia 68, 2019/4, 413–435 DOI 10.25162/historia-2019-0022 Jeffrey Rop The Phocian Betrayal at Thermopylae Abstract: This article makes three arguments regarding the Battle of Thermopylae. First, that the discovery of the Anopaea path was not dependent upon Ephialtes, but that the Persians were aware of it at their arrival and planned their attacks at Thermopylae, Artemisium, and against the Phocians accordingly. Second, that Herodotus’ claims that the failure of the Pho- cians was due to surprise, confusion, and incompetence are not convincing. And third, that the best explanation for the Phocian behavior is that they were from Delphi and betrayed their allies as part of a bid to restore local control over the sanctuary. Keywords: Thermopylae – Artemisium – Delphi – Phocis – Medism – Anopaea The courageous sacrifice of Leonidas and the Spartans is perhaps the central theme of Herodotus’ narrative and of many popular retellings of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE. Even as modern historians are appropriately more critical of this heroizing impulse, they have tended to focus their attention on issues that might explain why Leo- nidas and his men fought to the death. These include discussion of the broader strategic and tactical importance of Thermopylae, the inter-relationship and chronology of the Greek defense of the pass and the naval campaign at Artemisium, the actual number of Greeks who served under Leonidas and whether it was sufficient to hold the position, and so on. While this article inevitably touches upon some of these same topics, its main purpose is to reconsider the decisive yet often overlooked moment of the battle: the failure of the 1,000 Phocians on the Anopaea path.

El primero era un alemán que se había aficionado al jazz en su país y que, una vez establecido en Nueva York en el 37, no tardaría mucho en empezar a grabar a músicos de boogie woogie como Meade Lux Lewis y Albert Ammons. Su socio, Margulis, era un escritor de ideología comunista. Los primeros testimonios del sello van en la dirección del jazz tradicional, por entonces a las puertas de un inesperado revival en plena era del swing. Una sentida versión de Sidney Bechet del clásico Summertime fue el primer gran éxito de la nueva compañía. Blue Note solía organizar sus sesiones de grabación de madrugada, una vez terminados los bolos nocturnos de los músicos, y pronto se hizo popular por su respeto y buen trato a los artistas, que a menudo podían involucrarse en tareas de producción.
