While Timurid fine art such as miniature painting has been extensively studied, the literary production of the era has not been fully explored. Abd al-Rahman Jami (817/1414- 898/1492), the most renowned poet of the Timurids, is among those Timurid poets who have not been methodically studied in Iran and the West. Although, Jami was recognized by his contemporaries as a major authority in several disciplines, such as science, philosophy, astronomy, music, art, and most important of all poetry, he has yet not been entirely acknowledged in the post Timurid era. This dissertation highlights the significant contribution of Jami, the great poet and Sufi thinker of the fifteenth century, who is regarded as the last great classical poet of Persian literature. It discusses his influence on Persian literature, his central role in the Naqshbandi Order, and his input in clarifying Ibn Arabi's thought. Jami spent most of his life in Herat, the main center for artistic ability and aptitude in the fifteenth century; the city where Jami grew up, studied, flourished and produced a variety of prose and poetry. -

religions Article Sayyid Jamal¯ ad-Dın¯ Asadab¯ ad¯ ı¯ Revisited: Reinvigorating the Emancipatory Potential of Post-Islamism Simin Fasihi Department of History, Faculty of Literature, Alzahra University, Tehran 19938 93973, Iran; [email protected] Abstract: This article seeks to provide a framework for rereading the works of Sayyid Jamal¯ ad-D¯ın Asadab¯ ad¯ ¯ı/Afghani in accordance with the main characteristics of “post-Islamism”, which was coined and conceptualized by Asef Bayat. Although the term “post-Islamism” was not explicitly used by Asadab¯ ad¯ ¯ı/Afghani himself, I argue that we may find some of the main features of a post- Islamist discourse in his works. Hence, in this article, post-Islamism does not refer to an era or a historical period, but to an intellectual discourse or project; it is understood conceptually rather than historically. I argue that, while Asadab¯ ad¯ ¯ı/Afghani foresaw the need to acknowledge the legitimacy crisis of Islam, he nevertheless rejected the adoption of a purely secular perspective as a response. After identifying the fundamental pillars of Asadab¯ ad¯ ¯ı/Afghani’s thought, I shall demonstrate how his approach corresponds to the reconciliatory position of post-Islamist thinking, which seeks to marry Islam with more modern values of individual choice and freedom. Kamola Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Joel Walker History The Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh (Collected histories) of Rashīd al-Dīn Ṭabīb (d. 1318) has long been considered the single richest witness to the history of the early Mongol Empire in general and its Middle Eastern branch, the Ilkhanate, in particular. This has created a persistent dependence on the work as a source of historical data, with a corresponding lack of appreciation for the place it holds within Perso-Islamic intellectual history. This understanding of Rashīd al-Dīn and the Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh, however, does not match certain historiographical and ideological strategies evident in the work itself and in other works by Rashīd al-Dīn and his contemporaries. This dissertation reads beyond the monolithic and uncritical use of the Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh that dominates modern scholarship on Mongol and Ilkhanid history. Instead, it fits Rashīd al-Dīn and his work into the difficult process of transforming the Mongol Ilkhans from a dynasty of foreign military occupation into one of legitimate sovereigns for the Perso-Islamic world. This is the first study to examine a full range of Persianate cultural responses to the experience of Mongol conquest and rule through the life and work of the most prominent statesman of the period. -

Azizi History of Medicine in Iran In Memory of Iraj Afshar (1925 – 2011), A Renowned Scholar of Iranian Studies Mohammad Hossein Azizi MD•1 “He, who lived with love, never dies.” Hafez, the Iranian poet (ca. 1315 – 1390). Iraj Afshar (1925 – 2011) Abstract On March 9th, 2011, the eminent scholar of Iranian studies, historian, bibliographer, Persian manuscript expert, journalist, biographer and writer, Iraj Afshar passed away at the age of 85 in Tehran. His demise was a great loss to Iranian culture. He edited or wrote around 300 books in various elds of Iranian studies, including the history of medicine in Iran and published more than 2000 papers in local and international journals. The late Afshar was considered as a world-class Iranologist who promoted Persian culture for over ve decades and had protable mutual worldwide connection with famed scholars in the eld of Iranian studies and pertinent international societies. Herein is a brief look at his life and career, with special focus on his works in the eld of the history of medicine in Iran. Keywords: history of medicine, Iran, Iranian studies Introduction From the beginning of its foundation in 1958 until 2011, the Dr. Mahmoud Afshar Foundation published around 150 books in the raj Afshar was the son of Mahmoud Afshar (b.Yazd, 1893 – eld of Iranian literature and history, and during the past 19 years I d. Tehran, 1983), who obtained his doctorate in political and has given an annual award to an eminent scholar in the eld of social sciences from Lozan (Lausanne) University, Switzer- Iranian studies. -
Politics of Culture in Iran
Politics of Culture in Iran Politics of Culture in Iran is the first comprehensive study of modern anthropology within the context of Iranian studies and politics in the twentieth century. This book analyses the ways in which anthropology and culture in Iran have interacted with Iranian politics and society. In particular it highlights how and why anthropology and culture became part of wider socio-political discourses and how they were appropriated and rejected by the pre- and post-revolutionary regimes. The author shows that there have been three main phases of Iranian anthropology, corresponding broadly to three periods in the social and political development of Iran and including: ● The Period of Nationalism: lasting approximately from the Constitutional Revolution (1906–11) and the end of the Qajar dynasty until the end of Reza Shah’s reign (1941); ● The Period of Nativism: from the 1950s until the Islamic Revolution (1979); ● The Post-Revolutionary Period. This book also places Iran within an international context by demonstrating how Western anthropological concepts, theories and methodologies affected epistemological and political discourses in Iranian anthropology. Politics of Culture in Iran is essential reading for those with interests in Iranian society and politics and anthropology.
