Christian Kelly married William Clague on the 28th of January, 1726-7, at Braddan. Continued from 7.5.1 and see 11.3.1 below.

Thomas Kelly married Ann Hogg on the 27th of February, 1799, at Maughold. See 11.4.1 below. Their son, John, married Catherine Kinrade see Volume III, 1.6.5.

11.1 Origins

11.1.1 Kelly is, by a factor of 2, the most popular name on the Isle of Man. Killey is related to Gale, Gell and Gill and is not a variation of Kelly.

Kell(e)y has two possible derivations from the Gaelic: either from MacCheallaigh, the son of Ceallagh (war,strife), or from Mac Giolla Ceallaigh (Manks Gaelic Mac Killey Kelly), the son of the servant of Ceallagh. The best known of the three irish saints named Ceallagh was the archbishop of Armagh who died in 1129.

The name appears as McHelly in 1417, MacKelly in 1429, MachHellie in 1430, MacKellagh in 1497, MacHelly in 1511 and the modern Kelly in 1607. The variation Kelley is known in 1628 and is still current, though very rare. The variations Kellye and Kellie have been noted in 1607 and 1629.

11.3.1 Christian Kelly (455) was baptized on the 5th of July, 1704, at Braddan. She married William Clague on the 28th of January, 1726-7, see 7.5.1. See 7.6 for details of her descendants.

11.4 Thomas Kelly—1775

11.4.1 Thomas Kelly (4292) was born circa 1775. A labourer, he married Ann Hogg on the 27th of February, 1799, at Maughold (see Volume III, 20.8.1). In 1841 he was living at Dhoon with his wife and two of his children. He was buried at Maughold on the 18th of August, 1846, when his age was recored at 66 years. (Residence given as Rhone in transcript–shoud be Dhoon?) See 11.5 for details of his descendants.

11.5.1 Esther Kelly (4293) was baptized on the 20th of January, 1799, at Maughold. She married Philip Caley (see Volume III, 12.4.6) on the 29th of October, 1819, at Lonan. In 1871, a widow, she was living at Bllaraugh. In 1881 she was still living at Bllaragh with Robert Garrett, a 26 years old grand–son. She was buried at Lonan on the 3rd of May, 1890, when her age was given as 90 years. See Volume III, 12.9 for details of her descendants.

11.5.2 Jane Kelly (4294) was baptized on the 4th of April, 1802, at Maughold.

11.5.3 Robert Kelly (4295) was baptized on the 11th of May, 1806, at Maughold.

11.5.4 James Kelly (4296) was baptized on the 16th of October, 1808, at Maughold.

11.5.5 Thomas Kelly (4297) was baptized on the 3rd of March, 1811, at Maughold. A joiner, in 1841 he was living with his parents at Dhoon.

11.5.6 Margaret Kelly (4298) was baptized on the 20th of June, 1813, at Maughold.

11.5.7 Catherine Kelly (4299) was baptized on the 15th of October, 1815, at Maughold.

11.5.8 Alice Kelly (4281) was baptized on the 23rd of April, 1820, at Maughold. She married, William Kinrade on the 20th of December, 1845, at Maughold. She died on the 2nd of October, 1896, and was buried at Maughold. See Volume III, 3.7 for details of her descendants.

In 1841 she was living with her parents at Dhoon.

11.6 John Kelly—1780

11.6.1 John Kelly (480) was born in approximately 1780. He married Anne Gelling (see 10.7.3) at Kirk Braddan on the 4th of June, 1805. See 11.7 for details of his descendants.

The following monumental inscription has been recorded at Old Braddan, Southside, grave 462. John Kelly son of John Kelly and Anne his wife of Douglas, was interred here 18th Feb 1809 aged 3 years. Here lieth Anne wife of John Kelly late of Douglas and daughter of Evan Gelling of the estate of Chly-Bane of this parish who departed this life on 4th day May 1816 in the 33rd year of her life Edward Kelly son of the above died the 3rd June 1831 aged 23 years Also Jane Hogg wife of Thos Hogg of Douglas

11.7.1 John Kelly was baptized on the 14th of May, 1804, at Braddan. He did not survive infancy.

11.7.2 John Kelly (388) was baptized on the 23rd of Februrary, 1806, at Braddan. He did not survive childhood and was buried at Kirk Braddan on the 18th of February, 1809 aged three years.

11.7.3 James Kelly (405) was baptized at Kirk Braddan on the 15th of September, 1807. No further details are available.

11.7.4 Edward Kelly (406) was baptized on the 6th of November, 1808 at Kirk Braddan. He died on the 21 of April, 1852.

11.7.5 Ann Kelly (408) was baptized on the 8th of April 1810.

11.7.6 Catherine Kelly (409) was baptized on the 1 of September, 1811.

11.7.7 Isabella Kelly (493) was baptized on the 25th of October, 1812 at Kirk Braddan.

11.7.8 John Kelly (111), the third son of this name, was born in 1814 as he was baptized on New Year’s Day, 1815. He has not been identified in the 1841 census. He married Ann Kewley (see Volume II, 15.15.6) at Kirk Braddan on the 12th of August, 1848. The family have not been identified in the 1851 census. In 1861 the family were living at 19, Bigwell Street, when John was described as a seaman which would explain why he was not found in earlier cenuses if he was at sea. In 1871 the family were liivng at 30, Barrack Street. He has not been found in the 1881 census. See 11.8 for details of his descendants.

11.7.9 Elizabeth Kelly (498) was baptized on the 3rd of March 1816 at Kirk Braddan. No further details are available.

11.8.1 Agnes Kelly, (482) was baptized on the 11th of August, 1850, at St. Matthew, Douglas. In 1861 she was living with her parents at 19, Bigwell Street. In 1871 she was living with her parents at 30, Barrack Street, and employed as a domestic servant.

11.8.2 Catherine Kelly (53) was born on the 15th of January, 1854. She married James Carney (see 8.4.2) on the 20th of October, 1878 at Kirk Braddan. She was buried at Braddan on the 21 of February, 1918. See 8.5 for details of her descendants.

In 1861 she was living with her parents at 19, Bigwell Street. In 1871 she was living with her parents at 30, Barrack Street, and employed as a domestic servant. She apprenticed as a baker and is known to have worked at Government House on baking days.

11.8.3 William Kelly (483) was born circa 1858 at Douglas. In 1861 he was living with his parents at 19, Bigwell Street, when his age was recorded as 2 years. In 1871 he was living with his parents at 30, Barrack Street. He has not been identifed in the 1881 census.

11.9 John Kelly—1797

11.9.1 John Kelly (2510) was born circa 1797 at Maughold. (Possibly the son of Patrick Kelly & Jane Christian, bp. 22nd of Novcember, 1797.) He married Ann Hogg on the 21st of June, 1823, at Maughold. He died before the census of 1871.

An agricultural labourer, he was living at Barroney, Maughold, with his wife and family in 1841. By 1851 he and his family had moved to Tromode where he was still employed as a farm labourer. In 1861, a widower, he was living with his youngest daughter at Ballayilgane, Lonan, when he was employed as a labourer in the mines.

11.9.2 Ann Hogg (2511) was baptized on the 6th of July, 1800, at Maughold, the daughter of John Hogg & Margaret Kirmeen. She married John Kelly on the 21st of June, 1823, at Maughold. She has not been found in the 1851 census when the rest of the family was living at Tromode.

11.10.1 John Kelly (2462) was born circa 1820 at Maughold. He married Catherine Kinrade (see Volume III, 1.6.5) on the 31 of January, 1857, at Maughold. He was buried at Lonan on the 28th of March, 1889, when his age was recorded as 70 years. See 11.11 for details of his descnedants.

In 1841 he was living with his parents at Barroney, Maughold. By 1851 the family had moved to Tromode. John was by now employed as a shoemaker though his six siblings were all employed as spinners in the mills at Tromode. He appears to have followed his trade as shoemaker in Ramsey. In 1861 he was living at 37, Maughold Street, Ramsey, with his wife and family. By 1871 the family had moved to Laxey where John continued to earn his living as a shoemaker. In 1881 he was living at 9, Glen Road.

11.10.2 James Kelly (2513) was baptized on the 14th of August, 1825, at Maughold. He was living at home in 1841 at Maughold. In 1851 he was not living with his family at Tromode.

11.10.3 Margaret Kelly (2512) was born circa 1827. She was not living at home in 1841 but she appears with the rest of her family in the census of 1851 at Tromode, at which time she was unmarried and working as a spinner in the mills.

11.10.4 Ann Kelly (2514) was baptized on the 8th of January, 1832, at Maughold. She was living at home in 1841 and 1851. Working as a spinner at the Tromode mills in 1851.

11.10.5 Robert Kelly (2515) was baptized on the 29th of June, 1834, at Maughold. He married Mary Ann Kelly on the 21st of August, 1858, at Lonan.

He was living at home in 1841 and 1851. In 1861 he and his young family were living with his in–laws at Ballayilgane, Lonan.

11.10.5.1 Mary Ann Kelly was baptized on the 12th of September, 1830, at Lonan, the daughter of Thomas Kelly & Ellinor Kewley.

11.10.6 Thomas Kelly (2516) was baptized on the 29th of October, 1837, at Maughold. He was living at home in 1841 and 1851.

11.10.7 Jane Kelly (2517) was baptized on the 15th of May, 1841, at Maughold. She was living at home in 1841 (aged 1 month) and 1851.

11.11.1 Ellen Jane Kelly (2507) was born in Ramsey and baptized on the 17th of March, 1857, at Maughold. In 1861 she was living with her parents at 37, Maughold Street, Ramsey.

11.11.2 Catherine Alice Kelly (2508) was born in Ramsey and baptized on the 28th of August, 1859, at Maughold. In 1861 she was living with her parents at 37, Maughold Street, Ramsey.

11.11.3 Ann Kelly (2509) was born in Ramsey and baptized on the 7th of April, 1861, at Maughold.

In 1861 she was living with her parents at 37, Maughold Street, Ramsey. In 1871 she was living with her parents. In 1881 she was living with her widowered father at 9, Glen road, Laxey.

11.11.4 John Kelly (5105) was born in Ramsey and baptized on the 2nd of February, 1863, at Maughold. In 1871 he was living with his parents.

11.11.5 Thomas Kelly (5106) was born in Ramsey and baptized on the 16th of April, 1865, at Maughold.

11.11.6 William Kelly (5107) was born in Ramsey and baptized on the 24th of July, 1868, at Maughold. In 1871 he was living with his parents. In 1881 he was living with his widowered father.

11.12 Robert Kelly—1807

11.12.1 Robert Kelly (5699) was born circa 1807 at Santan. He married Mary Quine (see Volume III, 23.16.1) on the 4th of February, 1834, at Santan. He was buried at Santan on the 7th of April, 1881, when his age was recorded as 74 years. See 11.13 for details of his descendants.

In 1841 the family were living in a cottage at Foxdale mines where Robert was employed as a labourer. By 1851 the family had returned to Santan where Robert was employed as an agricultural labourer at Ballacorris. In 1861 the family were living at Mount Murray. In 1871 the family were living at Hope Lodge, Marown. In 1881 Robert & Mary were living at Mount Murray Lodge together with their grand-daughter Maud Wilton, aged 12.

11.13.1 Margaret Kelly (5700) was baptized on the 30th of December, 1838, at Marown. In 1841 she was living with her parents at Foxdale. In 1851 she was living with her parents at Ballacorris, Santan.

11.13.2 Mary Elizabeth Kelly (5701) was baptized on the 22nd of November, 1840, at Marown. In 1841 she was living with her parents at Foxdale. In 1851 she was living with her parents at Ballacorris, Santan. She married ... Wilton. In 1871, a widow, she and her daughter Maud had returned to the Island and were living with her parents.

11.13.3 Catherine Ellin Kelly (5702) was baptized on the 16th of October, 1842, at Marown. In 1851 she was living with her parents at Ballacorris, Santan. In 1861 she was working on the farm of Thomas & Isabella Gelling at Nary Veg, Santan. Robert Kinrade (see Volume III, 6.44.2) was also working on the farm. She married Robert on the 21 of September, 1861, at Santan. See Volume III, 6.47 for details of her descendants.

11.13.4 Robert Kelly (5703) was baptized on the 3rd of November, 1844, at Marown. On census night in 1851 he was staying with his grand-parents, William & Elizabeth Quine.

11.13.5 James William Kelly (5704) was baptized on the 2nd of January,1848, at Marown with his twin brother. In 1851 he was living with his parents at Ballacorris, Santan. In 1861 he was living with his parents at Mount Murray. In 1871 he was employed as a shoemaker and living with his parents at Hope Lodge, Marown.

11.13.6 Thomas Quine Kelly (5856) was baptized on the 2nd of January,1848, at Marown with his twin brother. In 1851 he was living with his parents at Ballacorris, Santan. On census night 1861 he was visiting on the farm of his widowed grand-mother at Ballagick, Santan.

11.13.7 Esther Ann Kelly (5705) was baptized on the 11th of April, 1851, at Santan. In 1851 she was living with her parents at Ballacorris, Santan. In 1861 she was living with her parents at Mount Murray. In 1871 she was employed as an housemaid in the home of Caesar Bacon at Seafield, Santan.

11.13.8 Alfred Kelly (5707) was baptized on the 5th of November, 1855, at Marown. In 1861 he was living with his parents at Mount Murray.In 1871 he was employed and living on the farm of his widowed grand-mother, Elizabeth Quine.

11.13.9 Christian A Kelly (5706) was baptized on the 10th of October, 1858, at Santan. In 1861 she was living with her parents at Mount Murray.

11.14.1 Robert Kelly (6059) was born circa 1821. He married Ann Kaighin on the 30th of October, 1841, at Malew.
