13.1 Origins
13.1.1 The name Costain has two possible derivations. Firtstly from the Norse (Mac)Thorsteinn, the son of Thorsteinn, which mean “Thor’s stone”. The name Thorsteinn appears as part of a 10th century Runic inscription on a Norse cross-slab which stands in Braddan Old Church. Secondly form the Gaelic macAusteyn, the son of Augustine or Augustus
The name appears as Costeane in 1507, as MacAusteyn, MacCoisten, MacCorsten, Coisten and Costein in 1511, Causten in 1603, the modern Costain in 1643, Causteen in 1675, Costeen in 1686 and Costean 1704.
13.2 William Costain, 1685
13.2.1 William Costain (1077) was born in approximately 1685 in Arbory. He was a farmer at Ballachrink, Arbory, and died in 1738. See 13.3 for details of his descendants.
In 1996 the Ballachrink property was still in the Costain family, the current owner being a William Costain.

13.3.1 Margaret Costain was baptized on the 30th of Novembr, 1708, at Santan.
13.3.2 Alice Costain was baptized on the 12th of December, 1710, at Santan. She did not survive childhood and was buried at Santan on the 15th of February, 1713.
13.3.3 Isabel Costain was baptized on the 15th of February, 1712, at Santan. she did not survive infancy and was buried on the 13th of February, 1713, at Santan.
13.3.4 Catherine Costain was born in 1717 at Santan.
13.3.5 Ann Costain was baptized on the 15th of November, 1719, at Santan.
13.3.6 Robert Costain was baptized on the 27th of February, 1722, at santan
13.3.7 Isabel Costain (1078) was born in approximately 1710 at Arbory. She married firstly Henry Lowey (1122) in approximately 1727 and secondly John Corkish (1076) on the 16th of December, 1732, at Arbory. She was buried at Rushen on the 3rd of May, 1747. Of her ten children only Isabel Lowey, Henry Corkish and Ann Corkish survived their mother. See 13.9 for details of her Lowey descendants and 1.8 for details of her Corkish descendants.
13.4 The Lowey Family
13.5 Origins
13.5.1 The name Lowey has two probable derivations from the Gaelic. Firstly from Mac Giella Dhubhthaig, the son of a devotee of Dublagh. St. Dubhtagh was a scottish bishop who died in 1065. Secondly from O Lughadha, a descendant of Lughaidha.
13.6 Early Days
13.6.1 Henry Lowey (1120) was born in approximately 1660 and married in approximately 1685. A farmer at Lingague, Rushen, he died in 1736.

13.7.1 John Lowey (1121) was the eldest son of Henry Lowey. He was born in approximately 1685 and married in approximately 1705. He died in 1709-10. See 13.8 for details of his descendants.

13.8.1 Henry Lowey (1122) was the only child of John Lowey. He was born in approximately 1708. He married Isabel Costain (1078) in approximately1728. He died in 1731-2. See 13.9 for details of his descendants.

13.9.1 John Lowey (1123) was born in 1728. He died before 1747.
13.9.2 Ann Lowey (1124) was born in 1730 and died in 1731.
13.9.3 Isabel Lowey (1125) was born posthumously in 1732. On the death of her great-grand-father, Henry Lowey (1120) in 1736 she inherited the farm at Lingague. On the death of her mother in 1747 it was acknowledged that six pounds was still due to her from her father’s estate.
Isabel married firstly William Cashin, 1734–1761, by whom she had three children and secondly Henry Lowey, 1735–1785, (First cousin to her father. Henry’s father was a younger brother of John (1121)). She died in 1786.
13.9.3.1 Henry Lowey was born in 1763. Farmed (inherited?) Lingague. Married Salisbury Taubman in 1787. Died in 1809. Direct ancestor of Rosalind Crebbin, see file for further details.
13.10 Daniel Costen—1630
13.10.1 Daniel Costen (3206) was born circa 1630 in Maughold. The name of his wife has not yet been determined, but he had at least one son, John.
13.10.2 John Costen (3208) was baptized on the 23rd of February, 1655-6, at Maughold. The name of his wife has not yet been determined, but he had at least one son, John.
13.10.3 John Costen (3210) was baptized on the 25th of March, 1680-1, at Maughold. The name of his wife has not yet been determined, but he appears to have had at least two children. See 13.11 for details of his descendants.

13.11.2 Ann Costan (3215) was baptized on the 2nd of February, 1709-10, at Maughold. She married Robert Kerruish (see 13.11.313.12.3) on the 7th of February, 1729-30, at Maughold. She died in 1779 and was buried on the 24th of January at Maughold. See 13.1213.13 for details of her descendants.

13.12.2 Patrick Keruish (3209) was baptized on the 2nd of May, 1663, at Maughold. The name of his wife has not yet been determined but he had at least one son, Robert.
13.12.3 Robert Kerrush (3213) was baptized on the on the 15h of January, 1705-6, at Maughold. He married Ann Costan (see 13.10.213.11.2) on the 7th of February, 1729-30, at Maughold. See 13.1213.13 for details of his descendants.

13.13.1 Isabel Keruish (3219) was baptized on the 21st of February,1732-3, at Maughold. She married Daniel Joughin (see 4.2.1) on the 17th of January, 1758, at Maughold. She died in 1813 and was buried on the 12th of March at Maughold. See 4.3 for details of her descendants.
