JUSTIFY: REDUX JUSTIFY AFANTASTIC@ The Week in Review, by Bill Finley AFTER LEGENDARY I get it, there is no such thing as horse reincarnation. Then again... BELMONT VICTORY Justify () is Seattle Slew. He may look different, he may have been born 41 years and 41 days after the 1977 Triple Crown winner. Slew has come back to life in the form of Justify. Of this, I am reasonably sure. First, they are the only two undefeated horses to have won the Triple Crown. But it's more than that. They way the won the Triple Crown is eerily similar, with the same running style and in races that look like mirror images of one another. They did not win with the sheer power of , the grind-it-out-refuse-to-lose style of or with the dominance that (Pioneerof the Nile) showed in the GI Preakness S. or GI Belmont S. Slew and Justify did it the same way, with the ability to cruise along at a high speed, keep going and refuse to let anyone get by them. After notching his sixth win in just under 16 weeks, the handsome chestnut appeared to be no worse for the wear. "Today he looked fantastic,@ Baffert said Sunday morning. AHe wasn't blowing after the race--he was blowing harder after the Preakness. That was the best work he had coming into all this." Justify had a number of visitors to the barn Sunday, including Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who piloted the colt to victory Saturday, members of the China Horse Club and owner Ahmed Zayat, whose Zayat Stables campaigned American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in 2015. "He's in that private, special club, the Triple Crown, and he established himself as one of the greats," said Baffert. "The thing about him I cannot believe [is] the way he walked in the paddock yesterday. He left the stable barn and I was watching the other horses and they were all skittish and he walked up there just like King Kong. He knew, like he'd been there. Justify AFantastic@ (cont. from p1) to return to his home base at next Sunday, June 17. "We'll take a deep breath and see where we are," said Elliott Walden, president and CEO of WinStar. "[Bob] will get Justify right and then we'll make a plan. We're looking forward to sharing him more. He's become a household name and I'm looking forward to his next race as much as [everyone else]." With his victory, Justify became the only undefeated Triple Crown winner besides Seattle Slew, who won the Belmont in wire-to-wire fashion in 1977. Just 1 3/4 lengths behind Justify was Phoenix =s runner-up Gronkowski (Lonhro {Aus}), who put forth a new career-top effort in his main-track debut and first start for trainer Chad Brown, who said he was pleased with the effort Sunday morning. Brown added that he did not have any immediate plans made for Gronkowski, but indicated that the GI Ahmed Zayat was among those on hand to greet Justify Sunday Travers S. at Saratoga Aug. 25 is a summertime goal for the 3- morning on the Belmont backside | Sarah K. "It's a race I would love to win, and it looks Baffert said the colt will be shipped from Belmont to Churchill like it would suit this horse. Brown also sent out A Raving Beauty (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) to victory in the GI Just a Game S. on the Belmont undercard and said the 5-year-old European import will be pointed to the July 21 GI Diana S. at Saratoga. While much of Saturday=s focus understandably was centered on the monumental rise of Justify to Triple Crown glory, his 3- year-old filly counterpart Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) continued her dominance of her division with her third consecutive Grade I score in the GI Acorn S. The chestnut was in good order Sunday morning, according to trainer Brad Cox, who said the filly will likely make her next start in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga July 22. "She looked great [Sunday] morning," said Cox. "We came out of the race extremely well. She looked great, happy, healthy."

The Week in Review (cont. from p1) In the 1977 , Seattle Slew was pressed by a horse named For the Moment. The fractions were :23 and :45 4/5 and he was second by a head after a half-mile. He shook off that longshot and then held off Run Dusty Run to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Sound familiar? Justify got caught up in a hot pace with Promises Fulfilled (), sizzled through fractions of :22 1/5 and :45 3/5, bid him adieu and kept cruising along. () made a run, but was never going to catch Justify, who won 2 1/2 lengths. In the 1977 Preakness, Cormorant was the thorn in Slew's side. He battled him through fractions of :22 3/5 and :45 3/5 and then Slew did his thing. He looked that horse in the eye, said goodbye and had enough in the tank to hold off Iron Constitution to win by 1 1/2 lengths. 41 years later, Good Magic played the role of Cormorant. He did everything he could to take the fight to Justify early, but it didn't work. A good horse, Good Magic wouldn't go away easily, but eventually he did and Justify had enough left to hold off the late runs of Bravazo () and Tenfold (Curlin). He won by a half-length. Slew's Belmont and Justify's Belmont are virtually the same race. Just as Mike Smith knew it was to his advantage to use Justify's speed as a weapon Saturday, Jean Cruguet employed the same strategy in 1977. He let his horse jump out of the gate and likely thought that no other jockey would dare go after his horse and blow any chance they had of winning. He led every step of the way, loping along in fractions of :48 2/5 and 1:14. With the race never really in doubt, he just kept clicking off one steady quarter after another and won by four. instant that he might get caught. But he didn't. Both horses had the unbeatable combination of a high cruising speed and the stamina to keep going and going and hold off their challengers. "He is talented like Seattle Slew, for sure," said Angel Cordero Jr., who rode Slew in his last four starts. "Justify has the speed, the acceleration and the stamina. He's a good horse. I knew before the Derby he was special, a very good horse. It's hard to compare horses. I just admire both of them. I think Slew was a little quicker than him, but they both have a lot of speed and a lot of stamina when it counts. I don't see any weakness with Justify and I didn't see any weakness with Seattle Slew either."

Smith rode the exact same race. He asked Justify just enough out of the gate to take control and then slowed the pace down. His half was :48 and the three-quarters went in 1:13 1/5. The opponents would make their run, but Justify kept them all at bay. More steady than spectacular, he maintained control, never seemed pressured and won by a comfortable 1 3/4 lengths. In one area, Slew comes out on top. He won his three races by a combined 7 1/4 lengths. Justify's combined margin of victory was 4 3/4 lengths. UNCLE MO COLT FASTEST OF WEEK AT OBS by Jessica Martini A colt by Uncle Mo (hip 41) turned heads with a powerful three-furlong breeze in :32 2/5 during Thursday=s first session of the under-tack preview of the Ocala Breeders= Sales Company=s June Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age and, when the preview concluded its fourth session Sunday, the time remained unmatched. AHe=s an exceptionally good horse,@ said consignor Gayle Woods. AI think he=s the best horse I=ve ever had my hands on and I=ve had some pretty nice horses. I only have to think about him and he gives me goose bumps. He=s full of class and he does everything right. He=s just a very special horse.@ The bay colt is out of Mississippi Queen (Artie Schiller), a half- sister to GI Juddmonte Spinster S. winner Asi Siempre (El Prado {Ire}), who is the dam of GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf runner- up and G1 St. James=s Palace S. third-place finisher Outstrip (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).

Mississippi Queen, with this foal in utero, sold for $360,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November sale and he was bred by Paget Bloodstock. Woods is part of a partnership selling the colt. Of the youngster=s bullet work, Woods said, AI knew he was a good horse, but I didn=t think he would have quite that much speed because he=s so big--he=s close to 17 hands. But he galloped out in :44 3/5, :58 3/5. He just looked like he was galloping and did it so easy.@ After Thursday=s breeze, there was some speculation that the colt had set a record for a 2-year-old over the OBS synthetic surface, but Woods knew that wasn=t quite so. Four years ago, Woods sent a Scat Daddy filly (hip 1025) out to work three furlongs in :32 2/5. That filly, who RNA=d at the 2014 June sale for $975,000, was subsequent Grade I winner Celestine. TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 8 OF 11 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • JUNE 11, 2018

AWhen I went up to the office, they said, >We=re looking it up. We think that=s a record for a 2-year-old,=@ Woods recalled. AI said, >It=s not because Celestine worked :32 2/5.= She was obviously a very classy filly, too, and I don=t remember exactly what she galloped out in, but I feel like this colt galloped out stronger than she did. I seriously think he could be top of the top horses.@ While the vast majority of the horses working this week in Ocala drilled in one or two furlongs, Woods sent three of the 12 2-year-olds to work three furlongs. AI tend to do it a lot because my view is that it=s June and they=ve already run a bunch of [2-year-old] races,@ Woods said of the three-furlong works. AI think horses, if they are up to it, they should be breezing three-eighths by the time they come here.@ Woods also had an unraced 3-year-old gelding by Jimmy Creed (hip 853) who was the only horse at the under-tack show to work four furlongs (:45 1/5). AI just think it helps sell them if they are a little further ahead and they are gate-carded when they come here,@ Woods said. AThe Uncle Mo isn=t gate-carded, but I have broken him at the gate. He=s just a star. Whatever you want him to do, he=ll do.@ The OBS June sale begins Wednesday and continues through Friday with sessions commencing daily at 10 a.m.

It will be easy enough, at that stage, to be excited by the fact BYERLEY TURK REACHING that Study Of Man is out of a mare by one of the great modern broodmare sires in Storm Cat. But how many people, in THE END OF THE LINE renewing their admiration for Miesque, are still asking themselves how much of her priceless legacy might be credited to her mother Pasodoble--who was by Prove Out (Graustark) out of a Sanctus (Fr) (Fine Top {Fr}) mare? Prove Out was a brilliant horse with a fine pedigree, but I'm not going to pretend the male line of Sanctus means anything to me. Evidently it achieved a tenuous survival out of wartime France, so there must be a story to be told there. A comfort, in the meantime, to find that Pasodoble's second dam was by the linchpin Princequillo. Many breeders dismiss this as so many scrolls of parchment. And it is true that most genetic contributions are diluted generation by generation. Cont. p2

Study Of Man | Scoop Dyga IN TDN AMERICA TODAY By Chris McGrath Justify “Fantastic” After Legendary Belmont Win As we all know, the only bottom line most breeders really care Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) exited his historic win in about is found at the base of a balance sheet. And the ink they Saturday’s GI Belmont S. in fine shape, according to trainer Bob use, red or black, tends to be ascribed sooner to the top line of a Baffert. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America. pedigree than to the one running along the bottom. Commercial yearlings are branded first and foremost by their sires, even though the equal genetic contribution of the dam should make her family of critical interest. On the one hand, then, it was edifying to see three Classics in eight days magnify names in the bottom line: Miesque (Nureyev) as grand-dam of G1 Prix du Jockey-Club winner Study Of Man (Fr) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and great-grand-dam of G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}); and the great Urban Sea (Miswaki) as fourth dam of Derby winner Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), besides also being dam of his grandsire. Arguably, however, both Miesque and Urban Sea are exceptions to prove the rule. As such celebrities, in both their racing and breeding careers, they stand out luminously in a family tree: barely less of a short-cut, in terms of attention span, than crediting everything to the sire. But when Study Of Man, for instance, takes one of the best pedigrees in Europe to stud, we should be no less interested in all the other spars and buttresses that support the family around his famous grand-dam. Byerley Turk Reaching The End Of The Line cont. Ahonoora famously surpassed expectations at stud, above all Until science can link specific performance assets to specific in siring Derby winner Dr Devious (Ire), but was just 14 when he genetic strands, however, I will always find comfort in a died. His legacy largely rested with Indian Ridge (Ire) and comprehensive mesh of class behind a horse. Inchinor (GB). With Orientor (GB) running out of time, Inchinor In the case of Masar, relatively little attention has been paid to seems to depend on Notnowcato (GB), who has moved on to a the fact that Urban Sea's 4x3 imprint is exactly matched by National Hunt stud. What a pity, then, that the latter's son Ahonoora (GB) (Lorenzaccio {GB}). He recurs as dam-sire of both Redkirk Warrior (Aus), one of the top sprinters in Australia, lines New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Cape Cross (Ire) (Green up at Royal Ascot next week without the twin accessories Desert), who produced the dam of Masar with a granddaughter essential to a stud career. [Castration also cut off a promising of Urban Sea. Nowadays, unfortunately, it seems likely that this outlet for the Australian line in dual Cox Plate winner Fields Of kind of role will soon be all that remains for Ahonoora--and, Omagh (Aus) (Rubiton {Aus}).] indeed, for the entire Byerley Turk line. Thanks to Phalaris, who As for Indian Ridge-such a good stallion in his pomp, and transformed the modern breed a century ago, the Darley responsible for the dams of recent Group 1 winners Romanised Arabian sire-line has now all but extinguished those tracing to (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and Lancaster Bomber (War the other two founding fathers. The Byerley Turk line has been Front)-it is surprising that a nugget of commercial speed like defunct in the U.S. for a while already, which is a shame when Compton Place (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) finds himself depending you consider that transatlantic branches came through the on the rookie Pearl Secret (GB) for a viable heir. His two best inaugural Derby winner Diomed and the 16-time champion sire sons, Deacon Blues (GB) and Borderlescott (GB) were others in Lexington, and other great names like . But its dying this line who suffered the unkindest cut of all; while Domedriver embers in America could not be stoked by Breeders' Cup (Ire) and Linngari (Ire) proved disappointing at stud. Namid (GB) winners Precisionist (GB) (Crozier {GB}) and Arcangues (Sagace and Definite Article (GB) had their moments without producing {Fr}), respectively through infertility and incompetence--and a persuasive successor, and Indian Haven (Ire) is probably out of elsewhere the line is clinging on by its fingertips. time to come up with one. Plenty of eggs, then, in the rather curious basket of Dunaden (Fr) (Nicobar {GB}), much the best son of his sire (albeit from limited opportunities). From an undistinguished family, Dunaden raced until the age of eight and mare owners will need fairly long memories to recall how he won the Hong Kong Vase straight after the Melbourne Cup, and continued to show elite calibre over middle distances thereafter-not to mention a heroic constitution and temperament. Standing at just ,3,000 he was favoured with a first book of 96, and if his debut runners this year can match the start made by Overbury neighbour Cityscape (GB) (Selkirk) then all may not be lost. The question, of course, is quite what is at stake in the effacement of the Byerley Turk's line. The science is still Masar | Racing Post exploratory. The Y chromosome, distributed through the paternal line, represents less than 1 percent of the equine genome and contains genes mostly associated with sperm production and fertility. But it does contain ancestry "information", and studies are underway to establish whether the genetic sequencing of the Byerley Turk line shows diversity from those of the Darley Arabian crowd. Pending more certainty, it boils down to instinct. Even to a sense of decency. What right do we have, in our avarice and myopia, to kill off such a colourful part of the Thoroughbred's heritage? The Byerley Turk was not, as was Vice President, International Operations once claimed, captured from the Ottomans in battle. In fact Gary King there is a good chance that he was foaled in England, son of Twitter: @garykingTDN another import from the Steppes. But he was ridden as a [email protected] charger at the Battle of the Boyne, and his descendants have + 1.732.320.0975 included some of the breed's greatest champions. International Editor And ultimately it can't possibly be right, for breeders to take Kelsey Riley such witless sanctuary in the same familiar genetic motorway. Twitter: @kelseynrileyTDN For nobody really knows what kind of diversity is being forfeited, [email protected] once and for all, as every other byway becomes overgrown and eventually inaccessible. You can't have it both ways, after all: European Editor can't obsess with sirelines, one minute, and the next say that the Emma Berry breed suffers no meaningful loss when you eradicate one. Twitter: @collingsberry It's not even as though breeders can bring themselves to [email protected] experiment within the Darley Arabian monopoly. (Hence the Associate International Editor attenuation or extinction of historically fertile lines through the Heather Anderson likes of Hyperion or Blandford.) When a horse as good as Enable Twitter: @HLAndersonTDN (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is inbred as closely as 2x3 to Sadler's Wells, then it would be churlish to deny that the Marketing Manager addiction functions splendidly at its best. But the pathetic track Alayna Cullen credentials of so many new sires would surely be enhanced if Twitter: @AlaynaCullen they could offer the rare virtue of diversity-instead of the [email protected] commonplace one of being, say, yet another great-grandson of Contributing Editor Danehill or Green Desert. Alan Carasso Happily the third patriarch, the Godolphin Arabian, has Twitter: @EquinealTDN enjoyed a revival through the apt agency of (In Reality)-keeping alive the legacy of Man o' War through that Cafe Racing blossoming sire of sires, Tiznow (Cee's Tizzy). Young stallions Sean Cronin such as Strong Mandate (Tiznow), Tourist (Tiznow) and Tizway Tom Frary (Tiznow) should be in additional demand precisely because [email protected] breeders have painted themselves into such a corner, in terms Irish Correspondent of an outcross, with their craven lack of adventure. Daithi Harvey Perhaps one of the last men standing, Dunaden and company, could yet become a Tiznow for the Byerley Turk. But they're Regular Columnists certainly drinking in the last-chance saloon. It's lonely for those Andrew Caulfield fellows, leaning against that bar. So go on, some of you: send John Berry them a pretty lady or two to cheer them up. Kevin Blake Tom Peacock
