Bing Crosby, signed American Christmas cover. Harry Lillis “Bing” Crosby was an American singer and actor. Crosby’s trademark bass-baritone voice made him one of the best- selling recording artists of the 20th century. He helped make pioneering changes to the way shows were recorded which are still seen in the industry today. He was a star in many genres, music, television, fi lm, and radio, and is one of only 22 people to have 3 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Billboard’s statistician Joel Whitburn determined Crosby to be America’s most successful recording act of the 1930s, and again in the 1940s. In 1962, Crosby was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Luciano Pavarotti, signed cover, our choice, the great tenor. Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian opera singer known for his tenor voice. Perhaps the most famous tenor of all time, and certainly one of the most successful, Pavarotti became associated with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras who together became known as The Three Tenors. Already having had a long career, international stardom came for Pavarotti when his rendition of Nessun Dorma was used as the theme song for the BBC’s coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. Although involved in a tax scandal late in his life, Pavarotti was also known for his charity work, particularly in aid of refugees and the Red Cross.

Yehudi Menuhin

Yehudi Menuhin, violinist and conductor, signed Ralph Vaughan Williams cover. Yehudi Menuhin was an American-born violinist, who later gained British and Swiss citizenship. He is considered one of the 20th century’s greatest violinists, and was a child prodigy. His fi rst public performance was a violin solo with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra at the age of seven. During his lifetime Menuhin played a number of famous violins. One of them, known as the Lord Wilton, was crafted in Italy in 1742. After Menuhin’s death, the violin was sold for over $6 million and has adopted an additional name: the ex-Menuhin.

Tenzing Norgay Tenzing Norgay and Sir John Hunt, signed 8.5p 25th Anniversary card. Tenzing Norgay was the Sherpa mountaineer who, together with Edmund Hillary, made history by becoming one of the fi rst two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Earlier on in the expedition, Norgay saved Hillary from a near-miss when he fell into a crevasse - Norgay’s quick thinking secured Hillary’s rope preventing him from hitting the bottom. As a result, Hillary made Norgay his climbing partner of choice for the fi nal ascent. Lord John Hunt was a offi cer and is best known for leading the expedition to Everest in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the mountain’s summit for the fi rst time in recorded history. As a child, Hunt spent much time in the Alps where he started developing his mountaineering skills. Ira Gershwin

Ira Gershwin, co-wrote many broadway shows with his brother George Gershwin, signed George Gershwin cover. Ira Gershwin was an American lyricist. Not to be confused with George Gershwin, his brother, Ira was a major infl uence on popular song during his era. Often overshadowed in history books by the looming presence of George, Ira’s creative achievements were nontheless great. Indeed, he and George collaborated extensively and produced many broadway shows together that featured songs such as the hit “I got Rhythm”. Ira loved loud music, though his wife couldn’t stand it. Sir John Gielgud

Sir John Gielgud and Janet Suzman, signed 1982 Royal Shakespeare Theatre cover (BOCS(2)11). Sir John Gielgud was a famous British actor, director and producer. He worked in both fi lm and on stage, and he is most highly regarded for his theatrical performances of Shakespeare. He also directed theatre, garnering enormous respect for his versions of , Richard II, King Lear and others. Gielgud was extremely talented, and made a name for himself in virtually all of his pursuits. Dame Janet Suzman is a British/South African actress who made her name working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, she moved to in 1959 to study, landing her fi rst acting role at the Tower Theatre, Ipswich, in 1962.

Don Henderson was a British actor known best for playing detective George Bulman in The XYY Man. He also starred in the fi rst Star Wars fi lm.

Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens, signed 1848 envelope addressed to Charles M Evans Esquire, with wax seal on reverse. Charles Dickens is widely considered one of the world’s great novelists and certainly ranks among Britain’s fi nest writers. His most famous works include A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations, all of which have had a signifi cant cultural impact and to varying degrees have become a part of popular culture. A fi erce social critic in his writings, Dickens started out life illiterate and worked in a factory as a child, becoming a philanthropist in adult life.

Bertram & Millvina Dean Bertram and Millvina Dean signed 25th Anniversary of the British Philatelic Bureau cover. Features special note from Millvina on the cover. Bertram and Millvina Dean are two of the Titanic disaster’s best-known survivors. Brother and sister, they boarded the ship with their parents when Bertram was just under two years old and Millvina was only two months, making her the ship’s youngest passenger. When the accident happened, it was their father, Bertram Frank, who initially discovered what was going on. After being alerted of the situation, Eva Georgetta Dean, their mother, boarded a lifeboat with both children in tow. Shortly after, they were rescued from their lifeboat by the ship Carpathia. Tragically, their father died on the Titanic. Millvina’s note is a wonderful addition to the cover. Terence Cuneo

Terence Cuneo, signed 1994 Midland Railway cover (BLCS90). Terence Cuneo, OBE, was an English painter. He is best known for his portrayals of the British railway as well as military action, but also painted landscapes and famous portraits too. In WWII Cuneo worked for the War Artists Advisory Committee in which role he illustrated factory scenes and wartime events. His big break came when he was appointed offi cial artist for the Coronation of Elizabeth II. He went on to paint various high profi le portraits, including Field Marshall Montgomery’s and the Queen’s. Cuneo’s trademark is to include a small mouse hidden somewhere in his paintings. The statue of him in Waterloo Station concourse honours this: a mouse peers out from beneath a book at his feet, and another is carved into the plinth. SGC022H £175 £35 per month over 5 months

Anne Bancroft

Anne Bancroft, signature mounted in a 1976 Bicentennial of American Independence cover. Anne Bancroft was an American actress. Over her career she won numerous awards including an Oscar, three BAFTAs and two Golden Globes. She also received two Tony Awards and two Emmy Awards. She used method acting to play her parts, which may well have been a factor in her great critical success. In 1964 Bancroft married director and producer Mel Brooks. The couple remained happily married until her death in 2005.

Jeremy Brett &

Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke, double signed 1993 cover. Jeremy Brett was born Peter William Jeremy Huggins, an heir to the chocolatier family. He was educated at Eton, where he attributed his poor academic record to dyslexia. However, he excelled at performance, including singing. Brett starred on stage and screen, playing alongside in both War and Peace and My Fair Lady. However, the highpoint of his career came when he took the role of Sherlock Holmes in 1984. He called this his toughest role, even tougher than , but his mastery of it made his the most popular portrayal of Sherlock Holmes to date. Montgomery of Alamein

Montgomery of Alamein, signed 25th Anniversary of VE Day National Army Museum Cover. Bernard Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, served in both World Wars. During WWI he was badly wounded near the Belgian border when a sniper shot him through the lung and knee. Nevertheless, he continued his service and became commander of the Eight Army in North Africa. Montgomery led the Eight Army to the fi rst large- scale allied victory of the war, and eventually forced all Axis forces in North Africa to surrender, resulting in the capture of 275,000 prisoners of war. Later in the war he was placed in charge of all Allied ground forces in Operation Overlord, including the D-Day landings, under general leadership of Dwight D Eisenhower. SGA016A £400
