Annual Report Annual Report 2011 Handelsbanken in brief Handelsbanken is a full-service bank for both private and corporate customers with a nationwide branch network in Sweden, the UK, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The Bank views these countries as its home markets. Handelsbanken was founded in 1871 and currently has almost 11,200 employees working in 22 countries. SATISFIED CUSTOMERS ON ALL HOME MARKETS Every year, Swedish Quality Index (SKI) and EPSI carry out independent surveys of customer satisfaction, based on a European standard. The results for 2011 showed that Handelsbanken had the most satisfied customers of the big four Swedish banks. For private customers, this is the 23rd year running that Handelsbanken is number one in the survey. Handels- banken also had top positions in all the Nordic countries and the UK, among both private and corporate customers. SECOND STRONGEST BANK IN THE WORLD In spring 2011, the international news agency Bloomberg published a report on the world’s strongest banks with assets of over USD 100 billion. This showed Handels- banken to be the second strongest bank in the world 746 and the strongest bank in Europe, the Nordic region branches in and Sweden. LEADING POSITION ON THE INTERNATIONAL FUNDING MARKET Handelsbanken’s position on the funding market is the strongest in Europe. This was the result of a report in August 2011 by investment bank Morgan Stanley, where Handelsbanken had 203 per cent of the year’s long-term funding secured, while other banks had only met 70 –80 per cent of their funding requirements. Earnings per share increased from SEK 17.72 to SEK 19.78. Ř Handelsbanken’s return on equity for total operations was 13.5 per cent. Ř The C/I ratio – expenses divided by income – was 47.1. Ř Our tier 1 capital grew by SEK 5.8 billion during the year. The capital base amounted to SEK 106 billion and the capital ratio according to Basel II increased to 20.9 per cent. We who treasure that wonderful idiosyncratic film The Private Life of SherlockSherlock Holmes were put in our place by the obituaries, all of which dismissed it as a resounding flop. Stephens flourished mainly in the theatre, and he did actually play Sherlock Holmes on stage, in Toronto in 1976, in the RSC production of William Gillette's play. Like his friend Jeremy Brett, he really hit his stride in the last ten years of his life, especially as Falstaff and Lear. He was knighted last January. Lady Stephens was among the many friends and family who attended Jeremy Brett's memorial service last Wednesday at St Martin-in-the-Fields. The Sherlock Holmes Society of London, the Northern Musgraves, the BSI, the ASH, the Arthur Conan Doyle Society, the Société Sherlock Holmes de France, the Poor Folk Upon The Moors, and other groups were represented at the service, which was organised by Granada Television. Reports appeared in The Times and the Daily Telegraph the next day. Philip Attwell notes that plans to broadcast a tribute to Brett have been dropped, though BBC TV showed The Private Life last night in tribute to Robert Stephens. (*Last week's late film was the Hammer Hound of the BaskervillesBaskervilles; the Radio Times claimed that "Holmes scholars" regard it as the definitive version! I'd suggest that the BBC's own 1968 production, with Peter Cushing and Nigel Stock, more nearly fits that description.

The existing research on gender inequality has established that important variations exist across time and place and that these differences are partly attri- butable to the cultural differences regarding gender roles. The accounting research has also established that women are rarely promoted to the top of the Big Four audit firms (KPMG, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young). However, the majority of research in accountancy has focused on Anglo-Saxon contexts (the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia) or country case studies without explicitly considering the role that cultural variations may play. Because the Big Four are present in more than 140 countries, we argue that the accountancy research that attempts to explain gender disparities at the top of these organizations would benefit from considering cultural factors. Such research, however, faces a key methodological challenge—specifically, the measurement of the cultural dimensions that relate to gender. To address this challenge, we propose an emerging approach that uses the gender distinctions in language to measure cultural attitudes toward gender roles. The idea that language may capture gender roles and even influence their formation and per- sistence has been the focus of emerging research in linguistics and economics.
