EPIMS: The Education Personnel Information Management System was implemented by the Department of Education in 2007 to collect demographic data and work assignment information on individual public school educators for the first time in our state's history. For more information see http://www.doe.mass.edu/infoservices/reports/gradrates/

Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS): Shows percent of students at each performance level for the current year. The SIMS has two important components:

A unique student identifier for all students receiving a publicly funded education in Massachusetts, and Transmissions of data from districts to the Department for all students via the security portal.

All data published in this guide was collected via SIMS, unless otherwise indicated.

Special Education: Indicates the percent of enrollment who have an Individualized Education Program. (IEP)

Student/Teacher Ratio: The October 1, 2011 student enrollment to the total number of teachers.

District High Schools

Every January, Boston Public Schools distributes a school selection form to every 8th grader in Boston‘s middle schools. In order to have the greatest chance of getting your first choice, you must send back the form with schools ranked in order of preference; and you must send it in time for the first round. (There are four rounds in total.) You are encouraged to rank as many options as possible, there is no limit. There is no guarantee that you will receive your top choice school, so if you do not send in a form, you will be assigned to a school by the computer.

The district schools featured in this guide are: . Boston International High School/Newcomers . Academy . Excel High School . Brighton High School . Madison Park High School . Jeremiah E. Burke High School . Snowden International High School . . Urban Science Academy . Community Academy of Science and Health . West Roxbury Academy . Dorchester Academy . High School

Special Admissions Schools

Some public high schools have a special entrance process, meaning you must apply to them separately, as well as rank them on your BPS School Choice Form.

Pilot/ In-District Charter Schools: Pilot and In-District charter schools are two types of small schools run by Boston Public Schools. They often have an educational focus, such as health or the arts. Unless otherwise noted below, each pilot or in-district charter does require a separate application, varying from a simple form to a more extensive process requiring mandatory interviews, recommendation letters, an essay and other administrative forms. Specific application steps for each school are featured on the respective pages.

The pilot/ in-district charter schools featured in this guide are: . Another Course to College** . Fenway High School . . Mary Lyon Upper School** . Boston Community Leadership Academy . New Mission High School . Boston Green Academy . Quincy Upper School** . Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health . TechBoston Upper Academy** Careers

** These pilot or in-district charter schools do not require a separate application. Students can apply to these schools by marking them as a top choice on their Boston Public School Selection Form.

Exam Schools: There are three citywide exam schools in the Boston Public Schools. All three schools accept new students for grades seven and nine. The O‘Bryant School also accepts a few new students for grade 10. Students are admitted to the exam schools based on a combined score that includes results of an entrance test, called the Independent Schools Entrance Exam (ISEE), and their grade point average (GPA). The ISEE and the GPA are each worth 50% of the score. The ISEE is administered every year in early November.

The three exam schools are: . . . O‘Bryant School of Math & Science

Charter Schools: Charter Schools are public schools that operate independently of the Boston Public Schools system. Instead, they are managed by the Massachusetts Department of Education. In order to get in, you must apply separately to each charter school. Students are then selected by an independent lottery.

Any special application processes: All students are required to take the ISEE exam prior to entry. The exam is offered in the 6th and 8th grade to all eligible students.

What makes your school unique? The students of Boston Latin Academy, their families, and the faculty share a commitment of excellence. Our curriculum, while rooted in the study of the classics, liberal arts, and fine arts, has been developed to ensure that all students are well prepared for success in college and life. Students are encouraged to appreciate the ideas and practices expressed in the classics and to recognize the evolving continuum between them and the complex, ever-changing challenges of society. While appreciating the classics, we also use data-based research to inform and re-imagine our curriculum as we strive to make it match our 21st century student base of engaged learners. We seek to challenge our students with a rigorous curriculum while, at the same time, providing them with the scaffolds to succeed. Throughout, we value giving back to the rich and diverse communities of Boston from which our students come.

Special opportunities for students (internships, etc.): Boston Latin Academy offers a myriad of opportunities for the college bound student and all of our students go on to college. We have many Honors and Advanced Placement courses across all disciplines. In addition to a classics based curriculum, BLA offers music, art and a theater arts program. We have an exemplary peer tutoring program for all subjects. BLA also has many on-site jobs, summer programs, community service opportunities, and college fairs that provide opportunities for our students to be active outside the classroom.

Currently, teachers are immersed in infusing the IB Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12 and planning for the formal introduction of the IB Middle Program in grades 6-10. Teachers also assume significant leadership roles in school decision making. Students are assigned to advisory groups that meet regularly with teacher leaders. The school has a longer school day four days a week. Teachers participate weekly in meetings of grade teams and/or subject teams. We have a strong college counseling program. JQUS also offers extensive after school activities.

Quincy Upper School is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) to students in grades 11-12. We expect to receive approval in 2011-2012 of a proposal we submitted to the International Baccalaureate for formal authorization to offer IB‘s Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10.
