Orgill Envisioning Democracy: German Intellectuals and the Quest for Democratic Renewal in Postwar German As historians of twentieth-century Germany continue to explore the causes and consequences of National Socialism, Sean Forner’s book on a group of unlikely affiliates within the intellectual elite of postwar Germany offers a timely and original insight into the history of the prolonged “zero hour.” Tracing the connections and discussions amongst about two dozen opponents of Nazism, Forner explores the contours of a vibrant debate on the democratization, (self-) representation, and reeducation of Germans as envisioned by a handful of restless, self-perceived champions of the “other Germany.” He calls this loosely connected intellectual group a network of “engaged democrats,” a concept which aims to capture the broad “left” political spectrum they represented--from Catholic socialism to Leninist communism--as well as the relative openness and contingent nature of the intellectual exchange over the political “renewal” of Germany during a time when fixed “East” and “West” ideological fault lines were not quite yet in place. Forner enriches the already burgeoning historiography on postwar German democratization and the role of intellectuals with a profoundly integrative analysis of Eastern and Western perspectives.

    Billy Graham in West Germany: German Protestantism between Americanization and Rechristianization, 1954–70 Uta Andrea Balbier Billy Graham in Düsseldorf, June 1954 (Bundesarchiv, Picture 194-0798-41, Photo: Hans Lachmann) In June 1954, American evangelist Billy Graham came to the Federal Republic of Germany for his first revival meetings. In Frankfurt, he preached at the American Christ Chapel, in Düsseldorf at the Rheinstadium, and two days later he closed his first German campaign with a service at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Thousands came to see him and hundreds stepped forward at the end of the service to publicly accept Christ as their Savior. Another campaign fol- lowed in 1955. The American preacher then returned to Germany again dur- ing the 1960s, and his work there peaked in 1970 with his EURO 70 campaign.1 Graham’s campaigns in Germany were not foreign spectacles, but rites of passage in German Protestantism. The study interrogates the rhetorical strategies implemented by Kennedy in confronting Khrushchev over the explosive situation in Berlin. What rhetorical strategies and tactics did Kennedy employ in these speeches? How might Kennedy's speeches extend our understanding of presidential public address? What is the impact of Kennedy's speeches on U.S. German relations and the development of U.S. and German Policy? What implications might these speeches have for the study and execution of presidential power and international diplomacy? Using a historical-rhetorical methodology that incorporates the historical circumstances surrounding the crisis into the analysis, this examination of Kennedy’s rhetoric reveals his evolution concerning Berlin and his Cold War strategy.

One Germany in Europe, 1989 – 2009 The Fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 1989) Two journalists from Die Tageszeitung (taz), a left-of-center West Berlin newspaper, describe the excitement generated by the sudden opening of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. The event was the result of internal pressure applied by East German citizens, and it evoked spontaneous celebration from a people who could once again freely cross the border and rekindle relationships with friends and relatives on the other side. (Please note: the dancing bear mentioned below is a figurative reference to West Berlin's official mascot. Beginning in 1954, the flag of West Berlin featured a red bear set against a white background. In 1990, the bear became the mascot of a unified Berlin. The former West Berlin flag now represents the city as a whole.) "We Want In!" The Bear Is Dancing on the Border Around midnight, RIAS – the American radio station broadcasting to the East – still has no traffic interruptions to report. Yet total chaos already reigns at the border checkpoint on Invalidenstrasse. People parked their cars at all conceivable angles, jumped out, and ran to the border. The transmission tower of the radio station "Free Berlin" is already engulfed by a throng of people (from the West) – waiting for the masses (from the East) to break through. After three seconds, even the most hardened taz editor finds himself applauding the first Trabi he sees. Everyone gets caught up in the frenzy, whether she wants to or not. Even the soberest members of the crowd are applauding, shrieking, gasping, giggling.

    THEODOR-HEUSS-KOLLOQUIUM 2017 Liberalismus und Nationalsozialismus – eine Beziehungsgeschichte Helke Rausch Liberalismus und Nationalsozialismus bei Ernst Jäckh – liberaler Phoenix, Grenzgänger und atlantischer „Zivil-Apostel“ Momentaufnahme einer inszenierten Beziehungsgeschichte: Jäckh und Hitler in Berlin, April 1933 In seiner Eigenschaft als langjähriger Leiter der Deutschen Hochschule für Politik in Berlin 1920 bis 1933 kam Ernst Jäckh 1933 zu seinem unmittelbarsten Direktkontakt mit dem neu- en Regime und seinem „Führer“. Jäckh stand unter akutem Handlungsdruck, sich gegenüber den neuen Machthabern zu positionieren. Während er in seinen Memoiren und andernorts ein hagiographisches Bild von seiner eigenen Überlegenheit und Widerständigkeit im Um- gang mit Hitler zeichnete, demzufolge er phoenixgleich als standhaft liberaler Regimegegner dem Diktator entgegentrat,1 konnte er trotz dieser auf den Erhalt der Hochschule zielenden Unterredung seine Institution nicht halten. Wie auch immer Jäckhs Beziehungsstrategie ge- genüber dem NS Anfang 1933 ausgesehen haben mag, sein Kalkül schlug gründlich fehl. Er musste das übergriffige Regime gewähren lassen. Die offizielle Gleichschaltung der Hoch- schule zog sich zwar noch bis 1937 hin, bevor das Institut als Reichsanstalt firmieren und schließlich 1940 den „Auslandswissenschaften“ als dezidierten NS-Politikwissenschaften zu- geordnet werden sollte. 2 Schon zuvor aber löste Jäckh den Verein Deutsche Hochschule für Politik e.V. As you may know, the Aspen Institute Germany is a non-partisan, privately supported organization dedicated to values-based leadership in addressing the toughest policy challenges of the day. As you will see from the reports on the Aspen European Strategy Forum, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and the Balkans that follow, a significant part of Aspen’s current work is devoted to promoting dialogue between key stakeholders on the most important strategic issues and to building lasting ties and constructive exchanges between leaders in North America, Europe and the Near East. The reports on the various events that Aspen convened in 2007 and 2008 show how Aspen achieves this: by bringing together interdisciplinary groups of decision makers and experts from business, academia, politics and the arts that might otherwise not meet. These groups are convened in small-scale conferences, seminars and discussion groups to consider complex issues in depth, in the spirit of neutrality and open mindedness needed for a genuine search for common ground and viable solutions. The Aspen Institute organizes a program on leadership development. In the course of 2007 and 2008, this program brought leaders from Germany, Lebanon, the Balkans and the United States of America together to explore the importance of values-based leadership together with one another.
