I would like to welcome you to the opening of the 7th International Festival of Photog- raphy PhotoVisa in Krasnodar. Once again, the generous Kuban land hosts Russia’s most important photographic fo- rum with exhibitions from 14 countries of four continents worldwide. This year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and it is remarkable that the Festival PhotoVisa chooses The Language of Memory as its theme and features exhibitions of documentary photography from the Russian State Archives which witness the people’s feat and heroism in the name of the Victory. This year is marked by another commemorative date — the 1000th death anniversary of St. Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles. Kievan Rus was baptized by him and adopted Orthodox Christianity entering the family of cultures which have a favorable development vector set by the laws of Christianity. Tribute to Prince Vladimir and the ongoing charity work of the Rus- sian Orthodox Church is paid by two exhibitions prepared under the auspices of the Publish- ing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church. Such a large-scale project like the Festival PhotoVisa became possible due to the en- ergy, efforts, and potential of both organizations and individuals. They all deserve appre- ciation for their contribution to the development of national culture and strengthening of international cultural relations. I wish all the organizers and participants of the 7th International Festival of Photogra- phy PhotoVisa successful work, and its guests — unforgettable and positive experience. S. E. It asks, “What are the cultural conditions that encourage this movement to flourish in the Mexican environment?” In turn, “What does Mexican culture contribute to Mexican Gothic and Lolita style?” And, “What does Mexican Gothic and Lolita style say about Mexican culture, society, and beliefs?” The Gothic and Lolita movement is currently thriving in Mexico as an authentic, independent, creative, handmade fashion industry, yet to be co-opted into mainstream culture. With the do-it-yourself aspect of the movement comes its own, unique, cultural flavour. As such, it transforms and rearranges meanings of the original subcultural style in order to make new statements, which subvert the meanings, and understandings, of the Japanese Lolita identity. Analyses of Mexican Gothic and Lolita styles, in context with the Mexican environment, culture, and belief systems, as well as the operation of the Mexican Gothic and Lolita industry, are major focal points of this study.

It was as if she were a stone. Nothing could soften her. “Conchita, you’ll like it if you just relax. It won’t hurt so much,” he pleaded. His rough beard felt like sandpaper against her soft skin. The combination of cigarettes and alcohol on his breath made her nostrils seize up as she tightened even more. The bitter, putrid odor coated the inside of her throat right down to her lungs. The air passage began to swell and climb up toward her mouth reaching out for fresh air blocking her breathing completely. She forced herself to open her mouth wide and gulp in more of the rancid air being expulsed out of his vile body. She had to close her mouth firmly as more of the slimy air particles from his breath were rushing in sliding down her throat. Each breath made her sicker. Oh how she wished she could cease breathing, but nature would not permit it. She dared not retch. ‘How can this be happening to me? Was it like this for mama too?’ San Diego, California, USA, 2006 When David Henshaw awoke on Saturday morning April 9, he could not have imagined his life was going to change forever. If alive now, he could not begin to tell how it happened. David turned 51 in December and for some unfathomable reason started to look back at his life and wish he had done things differently.
