A new perspective on På∫ini 3 HARTMUT SCHARFE A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON PÅÍINI På∫ini Studies Indian tradition and modern scholarship 1 alike usually consider På∫ini’s grammar an almost automatic device to create correct Sanskrit sentences – its definitions and meta-rules (paribhåßå-s) steer the strings of operational rules in the build-up of forms. The definitions and some of the meta-rules are given in På∫ini’s grammar; other meta-rules have been established by a careful study of På∫ini’s formulations, by consid- 1. INTRODUCTION | 1 Introduction* Radhavallabh Tripathi IT is almost an impossible task for a single person to present a comprehensive view on the status and trends of Sanskrit studies in a vast country like India. What is being done here would just appear to be a sketchy account, containing snippets of information, that is to be further corroborated, properly analysed and explored. India is divided into 28 states, 7 union territories and 644 districts. There is hardly any district or region where Sanskrit is not studied in some form or the other. Sanskrit is mentioned in the list of 22 major languages, officially accepted in the Constitution of India, and it is also one of the three languages there, that have an all India character. Teaching, Education and Research In India there are 282 universities as per the records with the AIU, at least 112 of which have postgraduate and research departments of Sanskrit. The number of colleges teaching Sanskrit is around 10,000. “Modern methods” are adopted in these institutions for teaching programmes in Sanskrit. Apart from these universities and colleges, there are 16 Sanskrit universities and a number of Sanskrit pÀÇhaœÀlÀs or Sanskrit * This is an enlarged and revised version of my paper “Sanskrit Studies in India” published in the Bulletin of IASS, 2012. 2 | SIXTY YEARS OF SANSKRIT STUDIES: VOL. 1 colleges where traditional method also known as pÀÇhaœÀlÀ paddhati is practised. Chapter I Introduction 1. Importance of Sanskrit Language and Literature From ancient times Sanskrit has been venerated in entire world as a sacred and spiritual language. It is called „Sanskrit‟ because it is perfect and refined and strictly follows the grammatical rules. It is also called Devabhāsā’, the language of the gods. Sanskrit is known as the mother of Indian languages. It is not only a classical language of India but it is a storehouse of knowledge and a treasure of splendid Indian culture. This language carries the Indian tradition and great Indian wisdom. The Sanskrit literature is oldest among the world literature. The Ṛgveda has a credit to known as the most ancient and earliest literary record. The Vedas contain all sorts of sciences such as mathematics, medicine, architecture, agriculture, astrology and many more. In this modern age of technology Sanskrit is proved to be most computer friendly language. However, this is only the ground information of its sacredness and greatness. Its entire literature and, its vocabulary vibrate and pulsate with the philosophy and aesthetics. Sanskrit is a language which through its contents, richness and mellifluousness, has the power to lift us up above ourselves. The Sanskrit literature is very vast and it is divided mainly in three parts: 1) Vedic Literature 2) Classical Literature and 3) Modern Sanskrit Literature. 2. Vedic Sanskrit Literature Sanskrit has a history of thousands of years in this country. Its earliest literature is the hymns of Ṛgveda. The term Veda is applied to a group of literature that forms the earliest records of Indian Civilization. -

FOREWORD The University Grants Commission has decided to do away with the annual examination system and adopt the Semester System in all Colleges and Universities during the 11th Five-Year-Plan. By this, the students will be evaluated by a continuous internal process. It gives the student an advantage of quick learns and fear of examination is obliterated. The Department of Higher Education, Government of Odisha in its letter no. HE- UM-1/06 (Pt) 33388/01.09.2006 has proposed to introduce the Semester System in all autonomous colleges from the academic session, 2011-2012. Our college implemented this system at both UG and PG level from 2008-09 sessions. The courses have been thoroughly revised basing on the present needs of the society. At the M. Phil. level, the students are being evaluated on a scale of Grades instead of marks while the Syllabi are under Course Credit System. I hope, the students will immensely benefit from the present Semester System of Examination.
