Relaterat material. His account of two extended visits to Sinkiang (Eastern Turkistan) separated by a half-century interval , subject to the Cambridge Core terms of use, available at gives this work an extraordinary perspective. Particularly informative and interesting are Dn Jarring's unique observations and insights, based on his extensive knowledge of the area and the Central Asian Uighurs and their language. Gunnar Jarring served his native Sweden as a diplomat—several times at the ambassadorial level—in posts in India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, the United States, the United Nations, and the Soviet Union.

THE RUSSIANS ARE GOING: SADAT, NIXON AND THE SOVIET PRESENCE IN EGYPT, 1970-1971 By Craig A. Daigle* New evidence reveals that the United States was well aware of Sadat's intention to remove the Soviet military presence from Egypt and took steps over the summer of 1971 to ensure this end. We now know that President Nixon's decision to suspend the supply of aircrafts to Israel at the end of June and his decision to press for reopening the Suez Canal as part of an interim agreement between Egypt and Israel had as much to do with getting Soviets out of Egypt as it did with finding a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel. The decision by Egyptian President Anwar hurried a letter to Leonid Brezhnev, al-Sadat to remove the Soviet military claiming the United States had "no presence from his country during the advanced knowledge of the recent events in summer of 1972 has often been viewed as Egypt," and assured the Soviet Premier that the first step on the road to the October the United States would "take no unilateral War the following year. By removing the actions in the Middle East" as a result of Soviet presence, it has been argued, Sadat the recent developments.(5) was also removing the major obstacle Early scholarly treatment of Sadat's preventing him from engaging in another decision to remove the Soviet military war with Israel.(1) Though Sadat insisted at presence has generally fallen in line with the time that the expulsion of the Soviets this official account.

  • Equality and Participation
Equality and Participation Distribution of Outcomes in Participatory Processes for Managing Natural Resources Alba Mohedano Roldán Academic dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science at Stockholm University to be publicly defended on Friday 1 June 2018 at 13.00 in Hörsal 9, hus D, Universitetsvägen 10 D. Abstract Social justice has become an intrinsic feature of sustainable development. One of the ways in which it is expected we will reach more just and sustainable societies is through stakeholder participation in natural resource management. However, entrenched inequalities among participants have generated scepticism about the potential of participation to improve social justice and, until now, the literature has not provided sufficient evidence to disentangle such contradictory views. Approaching social justice from the viewpoint of equality, this dissertation contributes to the debate by studying how the socio-political structure in which participation is embedded affects how far participation outcomes respect equality. The political regime, the distribution of power at the local level, and the characteristics of the participatory process are conceived as embodiments of such socio-political structure. The impact of these three structural factors on outcome equality is studied in biosphere reserves, areas designated by UNESCO as sites for experimenting with sustainable development strategies through stakeholder participation. Survey panel data from biosphere reserve managers and interview data with stakeholders are used in large-n, medium-n, and small-n analyses to explore to what extent, and under which circumstances, participation can lead to equal outcomes. The results suggest that, although in nondemocratic states participation has more difficulty promoting equal outcomes than in democratic states, and that although participation leads to generally unequal outcomes in unequal contexts, some participation outcomes can approach an egalitarian ideal even in these unexpected settings.

  • Dag Hammarskjöld Remembered
It is now fi fty years since Dag Hammarskjöld left the world and the United Nations behind. Yet, with every passing year since his death, his stature grows and his worth along with his contribution becomes more apparent and meaningful. Dag Hammarskjöld Remembered | When Hammarskjöld was at its helm the United Nations was still a relatively young organization, fi nding its way in a post-war world that had entered a new phase, the cold war, for which there was no roadmap. He was a surprise choice as Secretary-General, a so-called “safe” choice as there was little expectation that this former Swedish civil servant would be more than a competent caretaker. Few imagined that Dag Hammarskjöld would embrace his destiny with such passion and independence and even fewer could have foreseen that he would give his life in service to his passion. But as Hammarskjöld himself stated: “Destiny is something not to be desired and not to be avoided – a mystery not con- A Collection Memories of Personal trary to reason, for it implies that the world, and the course of human history, have meaning.” Th at statement sums up his world view. Th is is a volume of memoirs written by people who knew Hammarskjöld. We hope that these memories succeed in imparting to those who never knew or worked with Dag Hammarskjöld the intrinsic fl avour of this unusual, highly intelligent, highly complex individual who believed deeply in the ability of people, especially their ability to aff ect the world in which they live. He once refl ected: “Everything will be all right – you know when? When people, just people, stop thinking of the United Nations as a weird Picasso abstraction and see it as a drawing they made themselves.” Today that advice rings as true as ever.
